I watched them bring that giat crane through a few years ago..it cleared the bridge by like 10 inches or something. they had to wait for the tide and all.

KTVU reported that oil spilled from the hole for at least half an hour, then later SF Gate reported that fuel was leaking. Hm.

They do, as well as tugs with translators to guide big ships in and out. This sort of thing is very rare in the bay, in fact, I can't remember the last time this happened, and I've been here all my life. As FK had said the fog was unusually thick today, which appears to have contributed to the accident. Still, there are a lot of questions about how it happened that probably won't be answered pending the usual sloooow investigations.

Didn't something like that happen back in the ancient history of the 1990s? There was an entire wave of McFarlane figures that never got to the US because the shipping container fell off the boat, or it sank?

Here in Houston we have an extremly busy ship channel with loads of supertankers going in and out 24/7/365. This kind of thing is very rare. Imagine trying to navigate that fucker. Most people have enough trouble driving their cars.

Ugh, it's now being reported that at least 58,000 gallons of oil spilled into the bay, much worse than originally suspected. Damage to several shores is being reported, all the beaches in SF and some in Marin have been closed for inspection.

It warms my heart to think there is a shipment of McFarlane toys at the bottom of the sea.

this kind of thing majorly bums me out, maybe im too much of a hippy or something. we're already destroying the planet enough in our regular routine, spilling fuel directly into the water is too much. such carelessness is depressing.

Hippy or not, you'd be an idiot to think that this is good in any way...

Somebody must have been asleep (or intoxicated) at the wheel for them to ignore all their sophisticated guidance systems and run into a stationary object...complete screwup on someone's part.

I recently heard (on some local news channel) that the fish in the SF Bay are all full of Prozac and Female Replacement Hormones due to so many people flushing their expired meds.

I don't think that's too hippy Josh. It's responsible. If it's "hippie values" to care about the health of the environment, then more power to the hippies.

Interesting, 'mook. As you probably know the local media have been warning about high mercury levels as well. Allegedly the local crab catch is pretty safe but after this news it's going to be awhile before I buy any local seafood. Bummer.

I think they said that it will take about a month to clean up the mess. I've been fairly close to those supports for the GG Bridge and the water is pretty rough. When we first set out, the Captain would let us steer the boat for a bit. Once we got closer he took control. We were on a boat about the size of the one's used for the Blue and Gold fleet and close to those supports was about a couple hundred feet away. We got to see some gulls eating a dead whale. Thank goodness we weren't down wind from that mess.

I would be more concerned about the prozac and hormones in the water than the oil. It sucks any way you cut it.

Just to be clear, the ship hit the Bay bridge, not the Golden Gate bridge.
