Where I work there has been an interesting shift...we were completely on Thinkpads for PC laptops a couple years ago. But now everyone is using MacBook Pros running Windows for their laptops.

I never installed bootcamp because I don't need to. Always wondered if it's 100% compatible.

Well yes, of course, but damn it I want to get rid of this dumb Elgato EyeTV crap and use onboard hardware to play my console games and such. My apartment is too small for a TV!

It is 100 percent compatible, I use Windows like 25 percent of my time (mostly work related stuff). Started playing Spore on XP too, and that's bad, because I have no time for Spore, but I'm making time for Spore!

Sort of an after-thought, but did anyone else see the new cinema displays? Those things have a 14ms response time! Oh man, that's quite an improvement over the first speed demon 16ms models. Seriously, I don't understand this AT ALL, pretty much all WUXGA monitors have like 5ms or faster nowadays... :?

The number itself is misleading. There are many different ways to measure response time, so to say that 14ms on these new monitors is worse than another monitor that is only 8ms.

I have one of the 16ms cinema displays and i've never had any ghosting or artifacting with high motion video, outside of what would be expected on any screen.

As for this new one, i do think it's stupid that it only supports the mini-display adapter. Would be nice if it supported DVI, without having to jump through an adapter.

And I think that adapter is like a thirty bucks or something.

BTW, the sweet new adpater is like 100 bucks if you wanted to connect the new laptops to a 30" display that needs the dual link DVI.

Historically, Apple's never been shy to stick it to you on proprietary cabling or adapters.

Yeah I saw that. They used to give you the DVI -> VGA adapters....time to pay!

100 dollars to go from mini DisplayPort to dual link DVI...guess i wont be using one of these with my 30" monitor :?

My desktop died a couple months ago and I've been waiting for this announcement. The main thing I find about apple is that there usually a good couple steps behind in regards to horsepower to PCs. I generally feel hobbled on the mac i use at work which is a fairly new mac book pro from the last generation. ANy advice on PC laptops that are in a similar price range, 32bit and probably 10 times faster? The only pc ive had was an alienware that i won 4 years ago that just died and i know youre paying more for the little plastic alien on the box than the parts.

Abe - the latest Sony Vaio's pack a lot of power but at a similar price to these Macs and have hands-down the best screens in the business.

TBH these new Macbooks look like they're taking style cues from Sony now and not the other way round. Glossy screens are horrific...great in perfect light/angle...rest of the time they're just a giant mirror. I really don't want to see myself gurning when I look at a screen

My laptop crapped out last week, and I actually ordered a Macbook then, not knowing about new ones. Quickly canceled, and am now going to take the dive. Still going to use Windows, both on the Mac, and my desktop, but I want to become "bilingual" in terms of OSs. The new Macbook seems pretty solid. I know people like to go back and forth between Mac and PCs, but honestly, both systems have their own advantages (and disadvantages).

If you want any sort of new laptop you're going to be hard pressed to find one with a 32bit processor. All of Intels new chips have been 64 starting with the Core 2 duo Merom chip which came out a couple of years ago. Secondly 10 times faster? Very doubtful. Most of your laptop manufacturers get parts from the exact same people. If you bought a Sony for x dollars and an Apple for x dollars, you are going to get roughly the same amount of horsepower, if you are comparing the macbook pro anyways. The macbook isn't going to match up well with anything simalerly priced in the PC world.

As for a good PC laptop, I like the Sonys as well. I had an old ultra-mobile a few years ago that was an awesome little machine. However I dont like their wireless network client, I'd get rid of that day 1.

God yes...strip all the Vaio proprietary crap out and you'll have a great laptop.

As a person who sells Macs to creative professionals for a living, I will say this about the new laptops:

They are freaking nuts to only offer glossy displays. Makes it MUCH more difficult to do print-oriented color work, you need a matte display, and a matte screen sticker thing is not going to rectify this.

I hate to say it, but it's really Apple sticking a big middle-finger at their pro user base, who are using laptops more and more these days.

    All IMHO of course.

Yeah I agree on this point. I also felt that the gloss screens somehow made the colors not as saturated for some reason.
I had a gloss screen, matte screen and a cinema display next to each other with the same image opened. There is a huge difference.

I ended up buying the matte and then had a screen protector that is gloss.
Not sure how well it works the other way around.

Why won't gloss screens work for print?

The glossy screen is definitely worrying me. I just ordered an imac after my PCs have given me nonstop problems lately. Its the newer model with gloss screen and I do mess with graphics, shirt designs etc... Im starting to think maybe I will need a cinema display hooked up to it. Guess Ill know when it gets here.

    ^^^

It won't be that big of a deal as long as your working environment is controlled. The screens are really beautiful, blacks appear more dense, etc. If color accuracy is absolutely vital, you might want to buy a cinema display. I agree that it's pretty stupid that Apple doesn't have the matte option for their pro grade laptops. :x

FWIW, I've worked in publishing for more than a decade and I have never come across a display that was 100% perfect to the output. The problem is always that unless you are in a 100% closed environment where you are literally at the machine that will output stuff, you're always going to have to know the "quirks" of who/what you are dealing with.

As a graphic designer, I have deliberately passed on getting a window office here at work for the past 5 years because I prefer to work in a completely light controlled environment. I never turn on my lights, and I have my office configured so no hallway light effects my monitor color fidelity. People never think I'm in the office because they never see my lights on and don't bother to peek into my office... I think Kirkland stopped by my office once, but I was taking a catnap. :D

I have no problem with glossy monitors and actually find that they can display better contrast and color saturation.

I use to do that in the office too. Not sure why people visited our room and have to turn on the light for us. It's though we forgot to turn the lights on ourselves.

I went to Apple shop today to have a look at the Macbook that was displayed. It's very sexy in size but the design is mediocre. Though the screen reflection is not as bad as people say.

I really don't like the titanium with black keys. I much prefer if the laptops have the same color scheme as the grey/black nano. It'll be so much sexier if the case is in dark grey and keys is matt black with white letters.

Just got mine, and have been configuring it for the past couple of days. Kind of frustrating at first (I'm a PC guy), but seems to be working well so far. The new touchpad is pretty bad ass as well. Boot camp sucks though. Aero doesn't work, and the trackpad support is crappy. But all in all, fairly satisfied with my purchase.

Not sure what the need for one would be... you can do mobile surfing with an iPhone/iPod Touch, and you can do actual work on a macbook... I think the divide is fine as it is with the Apple lineup.
