i hate when a band comes out with a new album and there is a song with lyrics so bad it ruins the band for me or if you just never paid attention to lyrics before, and when you find out what they are saying, everything is ruined example that made me think of this: on smashing pumpkins album 'machina' the song 'i of the mourning' when he said I peer thru curtains on empty streets Behind a wall of caller i.d. i was done i havent listened to them the same since
System Of A Down Science "Science has failed our world" That line repeated over and over again on a song recorded with electric instruments, and playing on my laptop is just retarded. Getting your environmental message out while railing against the very delivery system of the message itself is System of a Dumb.
bad lyrics are sometimes a good thing though. i mean, take MF Doom (granted, you have to like a bit of hip-hop for this example to apply). Almost every other line is basically a filler to go with the previous line. and what's up with words like breastisess? is that even a word? nonetheless, i love mf doom. and i love his lyrics.
Doom is a rare exception though....his plays on words often are steeped in madness and genius at the same time.
Billy Corgan's acoustic cover of Number Of The Beast will always score him good points in my book, aside from the fact that i've never really dug any Smashing Pumpkins really...
was just listening to doom last night doom rules Soup's on and I got a coupon chinese restaurant asking for the Grey Poupon he said "No, duck sauce soy sauce And this ain't no Burger King so you no get no toy boss" Uh oh it's beer o'clock, I think I'm sober how about we think this over, over a can of king cobra you ain't nicer than a lunatic schiester aka the vicster, or the vic miceter he wondered should he get a baldie or keep his edge up, v-shaped like by my waldy But that is the question, he wonders why he always wearing hats in the sessions listen up, new drink named it after Chong's daughter triple shot of 'gac, with the chaser of bong water V a strong supporter a triple shot of 'gac, with the chaser of bong water come on bring the slaughter
that shit rules. doom kicks so much ass with words. one of my favorite stories about doom is that he was busted for supposedly having 2 concerts in 2 different cities of different states on the same night. obviously, 1 (or both) was just some random guy in a doom mask lip singing. when confronted about this, he replied, "I am the mad villian. What do you expect?" classic. and i apologize to pickleloaf for turning his lyric thread into doom appreciation hour....
Doom Appreciation: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=26298 Back on topic: I'm a huge Beastie Boys fan, but the lyrics on To the 5 Boroughs album seemed forced/hollow to me. I generally like instrumentals, because I'm picky about lyrics, too. But, I think no song should have a "chorus" either. Nothing ruins a song for me like some dopey chorus repeated 50 times....
"Started out this morning feeling so polite I always thought a fish could not be caught who didn't bite But you've got some bait awaiting and I think I might try nibbling a little afternoon delight" just totally RUINED Starland Vocal Band for me!
i love it/hate it when home boy says...."When I'm on the L , I'm always feeling swell..." in the words of the limmortal Vanilla Ice..."Word to your mother..." maybe we should start a rap lyrics that ruin everything...not to take away from this thread....
I just listened to their 1st album (Gish) for the first time in about 10 years. I really enjoyed it again, but that's about it for SP in my opinion. That Number Of The Beast cover (Spun soundtrack) is well done but I can't believe it's Billy Corgan singing on that. I know it's his band, Zwan or Djali Zwan, or whatever. I'm surprised that with the popularity of this cover, there is no definite post on the internets claiming who actually sings on the recording. I can't find any.
yeah, it took me forever to find out that it was Djali Zwan, i just knew corgan had something to do with it. and it's only released on the Zwan single for Honesty. I don't really dig zwan, so i didn't want to buy the cd for just this one track, and there is no Spun Soundtrack release, at least not what i could find. so, i tried finding a place to download this, and that took forever. i wonder why this song is so shady?
