love blobpus, do not love this. I guess it's good though, I've been spending so much money on the animal dokugans and hedorah that I need something to not buy.
i like monsters and i have a soft spot for cute vinyls the mix out of both is mostly horrible kitsch. dead fortune cat or whatever its called comes to mind. mixing design elements out of different cultures hardly works. i like james jarvis king ken and bxh kun, the kingkun i dont get. illustration of deffy is looking great. knowing background info about it - thanks to plastichunter - makes translation into vinyl even worse imho as most crude mean apsects got lost in favor of much more cute looking vinyl figure. why??? you can sell 10.000 dummies but only 60 zags, i think its not so far fetched to assume a lot of cuteness lately has to do with mere finacial considerations. ...footstamp is worth the price for sure. im all in love with blobpus as well. about the size of a dummy. ...sorry couldnt resist.
Apparently this was an entry in a Kimokawaii (Gross-Cute) character creation contest for a later issue of the Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga 2.0 series (thanks to Tokyo Scum Brigade for that factoid). The figure is basically Miffy if drawn by Hino Hideshi (hence the X-shaped mouth, which is a direct Miffy reference). I can see where everyone is coming from, and if you don't dig it, you don't dig it. There are a ton of figures that I'm just not that into myself. But I don't think this was any attempt to riff on KR or Kozik or anything like that: Blobpus told me that he just sculpted it up for fun, sent a picture to the manga creator and Takekuma liked it so much they decided to make it. The first release was at Comiket last weekend, which is a whole other ballgame than anything Western vinyl related. Personally I think its cool and ordered both versions, mainly because I'm a big Hino fan and I really like the mix between Miffy and Hino here. I do think a "rougher" sculpt would have worked in its favor, though, maybe something just a shade closer to the Art Storm Hino figures.
I think this or a similar one was the first pic I saw of it and said *meh* but now, with pointed/painted the eyes/teeth/etc out more, I really like:
