Hey Everyone Here are my customs for the Red Carpet Kaiju Show at Toy Art Gallery LA on 10/4/10 there are more pics available on my website and flickr! Enjoy! ^_^ "Rainbow Shock" Elegab Monster Patrol Car "Light Oil Slick" Elegab Puppet Minis "Tropical Terror Marnon" "Mandragora" Marnon "Melon Burst" Zudon "Dark Oil Slick" Elegab Shuttlegon
There's no doubt the colors are good, but you really didn't work with the Elegab sculpts at all. There's all sorts of great details and differences in textures, especially on the car and Gonny, but it all just blurs together under a uniformly random paint application.
they're still feckin' gorgeous, IMO Then again, I am super #1 Elegab fanboy cheerleader... and I get jollies off the OsOr random paint apps.
thanks everyone! I just wanted to address the comment about the elegab customs being a "uniformly random paint application" these pics were extremely hard to take, i'm not a pro at photos. I went through dozens of shots of each piece from every angle and these are the ones that made the cut. I didn't post all the pics in this thread, they are all on my flickr page and website. I have to say the pics really don't do these customs justice especially the elegab ones! Regardless of how much texture there is in a piece, to me painting a sofubi figure like a warhammer figure is not my thing! that's what I kinda got from that comment No hard feelings, though! criticism is good anyway it comes! but believe these have to be seen in hand to be appreciated!
It's all good... the Customs board and the forum in general usually has a tough time dealing with even constructive criticism, but it's always nice to see someone actually want to talk about it. I've no doubt that photographing these is a bear... I've been working with real glossy finishes lately as well, and they're impossible to get right. I'm more of a concrete thinker tho, so to me, painting vinyls IS just like painting Warhammer minis... different strokes and all that I like the Zudon the best specifically because you did work to highlight the eye and mouth, while still working in plenty of craziness.
Looks like my fellow CT painter is killing it Amazing stuff man and keep it up your definitely raising some eyebrows. I also agree with Kirkland when he says that these look way better without the lines. If anything just paint the eyes to bring out some life from the original sculpt. Either that that your on the right path
Thanks so much Rich! yea the linework is definitely staying off my kaiju customs from now on! Really glad you like the new customs bro and looking forward to seeing what new stuff you got coming! hopefully I'll see ya at NYCC ^_^
Nicely done OO, I agree with P5 that the Zudon is the strongest one as well, or at least photographed the strongest, those tongue kaiju looks good too, but I think the patrol car looks a little muddled, but that could just be the pictures like you said. I wish I could get to LA to see the show, looks like its gonna be fun. phil
thanks phil and ted next time I will have a little more patience taking the pics! I still go back and look at them and I'm quite disappointed how they came out because they really don't show off the elegab pieces. I noticed also that the marnon pics are a tad bit blurry too =[
Loving the crazy colorful goodness!!! Totally reminds me of some Mexican candy I use to get as a kid, but way more intense. I can see everything fine too, thanks for posting the pictures!!!
These customs are, in my opinion, some of the best pieces of yours I've seen. I'm not really sure how I feel about the "muddled" elegab pieces but they're definitely consistent and that's nice. I'm totally cool with your themes like "rainbow shock" and "oil slick" and all that and I think the colors are nice and you've applied them well. It just seems, to me, that some of the character of the sculpts get lost a little with these kind of "sprayed all over" paint apps. I think Rich was dead on with his comment about painting the eyes to get some life out of the sculpts and that's probably why most people, myself included, favor the Zudon out of the bunch. As for the back and forth with P5, I think a spectrum exists between these kind of "sprayed all over" and "like a warhammer figure" paint jobs. Generally, if the custom strays too far in either direction, something gets lost. Regardless, nice work.
P5 said basically the same thing as Dustin and Rich, just not in the same words. With nothing to bring out details, they feel unfinished. Sure the colors are great but like some of us said, the sculpt gets lost. OsOr starts to do it in the Patrol Car but then doesn't push it enough to bring out the details...which is why the Zudon works the best. P5 never said anything about painting it in a Warhammer style. You guys just brought it up cause that's his background...and that's my background too. Painting details doesn't mean doing a wash, drybrush, wash, drybrush, paint application, although it can be. Painting details means what can you do to make the sculpt pop more.
I love your wise painting .... but I also love elegab's messy and Approximate painting.(I love elegab ugly color! ) maybe I do not paint them so...they lose their nature,
