I'm sorta having the same problem. I like the format for posting, because I can quickly thrown up a photo on the go but give it more verbiage than twitpic, and still have it link to twitter. What I am miffed on is where the 'networking' or social interaction part of Tumblr is. Besides people posting their sites other places, like this thread, I have no idea how people find other peoples' Tumblrs and interact.
I got into Tumblr once I saw this thread hahaha. I actually checked a few out regularly (fake criterion, holy maury mother of god) but didn't sign up until I saw a few others messing with it. I like it more than any other social media site. If I could get all my friends and family off of Facebook and JUST on Twitter and Tumblr, I'd be satisfied. That's not happening though. I'll post a link later, I'm at work. I didn't wanna post it anyway until I got a little more comfortable with it. Has anyone made their own theme? Is it a pain in the ass, like do I gotta be super-techy to do it? I haven't tried yet. I'd rather set something up myself but at the same time I'd rather not spend more than 30 min-1 hour making my own. I follow a few on here, I'll follow the rest of you later when I get in. I like it though since I can toss crap up from my phone, it's a little nicer than Twitter to me and it's fun to see what others throw up there.
I also wish Facebook (have one) would'nt exist but I think Twitter (don't have one) is even more pointless (and ugly to look at). I'm pondering whether I should start a Tumblr or not though. It looks interesting and fun. I'd do it bilingual, so nobody would follow it
Really? I don't mind Twitter due to the simplicity. Facebook has too much noise. Twitter is 1 stream, so I don't mind it. What I don't like, and do like about Tumblr, is for Twitter there's too many links. I'd rather just have the pic pop up, or video link or whatever. That's why I like Tumblr more. But for solid info Twitter is better I guess. FB is just all ad's and games and crap I don't care about.
^^ Right there with you and simplicity. I hate that FB has so much stuff going on, and frankly, while I want to remain "friends" with everyone, the deluge of information is overwhelming for a busy, working parent, and I'm sure it is for those of you that aren't, busy, working, parents, or a combination of any of the above.
Yeah and a regret I ever registered. It makes old aunts contact you. I rarely go. Exactly. I'm a seeker, not a follower - don't bug me with your shit.
What drives me nuts about FB is that all my friends on there WILL NOT CONTACT ME VIA EMAIL OR PHONE! WTF?! I tell them all the time "don't message me there, here's my email, hit that up!" Do they? NO! Assholes. Tumblr I see as a supplement. It's not so much "hey let's be friends and share info" so much as "We're friends already, or maybe not, but here's some stuff in a brief post that I'm into. If you want to look into further, feel free, but it's not being shoved up your ass."
Quit facebook a good six months ago and haven't much had the desire to go back. I've lost track of some people (and some have lost track of me) but I've found it effectively weeds out people not really interested in connecting. Not to mention enormous wastes of time and the habit of passivity. New iterations of Twitter have started to get a little junkier with the links and replies, but the directness is still unbeatable. As for tumblr, I'm a couple months in and really enjoying it. Low stakes, flexible interface, lots of funny shit. Following people from this list has meant the occasional toy picture pops up, and that's nice.
Signed up based on this thread too. For me, it seems like a good place to store random shit I find throughout the day or images I have saved on home computer / work computer / laptop....etc. http://marswillrule.tumblr.com/
Damn! That makes two away from total completion. I knew of the yellow but white also! Too bad there will be no more GBs. I would have loved to see a larger version of that figure.
i haven't tried tumblr yet... curious as to the differences between it and wordpress or blogger. blogger is pretty simple and has mobile blogging too. It has a social networking component that I find very useful. the thought of maintaining another site seems daunting.
Well if I were you I wouldn't bother, when you have an established blog I don't see the point. I'm not a "blogger" really and I've tried blogger and it just didn't flow well for me. I don't know why, just never felt natural using it. Tumblr is for us dummies I guess.
yea. it's blogging for lazy people. i think it's good for people who just want to share real quick what they think is cool. i think it's pretty neat if what you shared catches on and a bunch of people reblog it. alot easier to use than blogger and wordpress. i don't understand how people follow hundreds of people though... so much noise.
So I've looked into making a theme (For 2 min. hahaha) and quit cause I'm lazy and don't care. Just played with a few free ones. Here I am, rock me like a hurricane http://phantomfart.tumblr.com/ I'm hoping to put up lots more non-toy crap too. I enjoy tumblr very much. Finding lots of great crap.
To me, Tumblr is the sweet spot in between twitter and a blog with a capital B. It seems less professional than having a full fledged blog, but more useful than twitter is to get your thoughts out. Twitter has evolved into a 140 character promotion platform.
