godzilla 101: the birth of an atomic monster tue, march 13, 9:00 pm @ the hungry brain, 2319 w belmont (roscoe village) presented in partnership with the jasc $5 donation suggested i'll be attending just to see the presentation's excerpts from kim jong il's 'godzilla' movies. anyone want to meet up for some grub before heading to the event? can someone familiar with that area suggest a place to meet & eat?
the hungry brain is actually just down the street from me... so close... okay, i'm in. anyway, there's a 90 mile cuban, lush (small plates + wine), village tap (burgers & pub food) and costello's (sandwiches) all within walking distance, though i'm not sure how late 90 mile and costello's are open. if we want to hang out up to heading over to hungry brain, i suggest village tap. great beer list, and good food. there's also beat kitchen, which is a little closer to hungry brain than the village tap, but i know the tap has a back patio that we could sit in... not sure how many folks want to come, so i'm erring on the side of more room for us.
ARRGHH why Chicago, why? i don't think i can make it on such short notice I LOVE “Pulgasari,” about a doll made of rice that becomes a giant metal-eating monster.
WHY SO LATE? I have to pick up Mary from work and that is really late. We will get together soon. What about a C2E2 get together? Who all is going? I will be there Friday and Saturday.
c2e2 is still a month away... but yeah, i'm in for all three days again this year. got a crew coming up from downstate missouri... that's right, i'm importing comic nerds for this one! nine is a little late for a school night, and not everyone gets to work from home... but i figure i can at least pull off the pre-show and play it from there.
I'm going Friday. Tell me where to find you guys at the Con. I should be free that whole day. I'm cosplaying as the White Queen so I should be easy to spot. I'm not really doing that. Unless I'm paid. Anyone?
I'll be there at Jamie's booth or handing out postcards for Nakama. I'll be the jerk in the Nakama Toys T-shirt. I know it's a month away but if we plan now only half of us should bow out. Jeff, are we talking Hellfire club White Queen or New X-Men White Queen? Either way you'll look good in a corset.

way to be a cockblockin' threadjacker. other than jeff, whose job is to literally save lives, a little late school-night isn't going to kill anyone. c'mon! i've been jonesing for fried plantains, so i vote for 90 mile cuban cafe. i miss cafe bolero since i moved out of that area. maybe 7:30pm? i'll be there for a bite to eat regardless of anyone else showing up
ugh, it's impossible to coordinate a cask outing even if it's just for myself what kind of a shabby eatery closes by 8pm? i guess it's their other, main location that stays open later. well, in that case, i'll just go to the event directly since pubs don't do much for me. maybe we can get jd to show it at g-fest? perfect audience!
thanks to legoomba for making the trip! it was quite an enjoyable and entertaining evening even though it was not quite what i was expected. the presentation of youtube compilations was hilarious, behind the scenes factoids were surprising, and the description of the historical atmosphere surrounding the original movie was eye-opening. if you attended prof tsutsui's panel at g-fest, this would have been just a watered down version of that. in fact, the speaker (admittedly) lifted major portions of the evening's material directly from the prof's books. there was also much made-up-on-the-spot conjecture and personal anecdotal evidence delivered by the speaker as "expert" research & "hard" facts the best part of his stories was the telling of his super-nerdery in college which cost him his dream girl on their first date, but later connecting with his wife-to-be because of the exact same reason. for me, though, joy turned into crushing disappointment when it was announced that pulgasari would be projected silently as a mere video backdrop to a selection of j-pop/j-rock as we were leaving, however, we found out that this same group (a non-profit org in pursuit of education for the masses in random topics) will be hosting a 101 on the wu-tang clan. in may, if i remember correctly. anyone up for a late school night for that?
