Curious as to what everyone thinks of these. Brandt Peters, Kathie Olivas and Chris Ryniak all have Sofubi figures coming out. I'd be interested to see what these would look like with loose airbrushing, rather than masks.

You can polish a turd, dip it in gold and sprinkle it with diamonds... but it's still a turd! Unimaginative fodder by hacks without any redeemable skills or talent.

    Now, end of thread

It irritates me that people are starting to use Sofubi as a slang term for all Japanese toys. Brandt and Kathie already have "Sofubi" toys, they just weren't made in Japan. Instead of saying they're making "sofubi" figures now, because they like "Kaiju", you should say, they're having their figures made in Japan, because they like Japanese production values. People need to quit trying to put a catchy name on shit, to feed it to the masses. It's not the "Mysterious" East, or some catchy slang, it's language.

That said, I'm using the word sofubi, in my "Internet" handle, but only because I'm painting all soft vinyl. If I was painting wood, I would call it Slipstar's Wooden Extravaganza, or something like that.

Is "Sofubi" not interchangeable with "soft Japanese vinyl"?

While I am certainly not surprised at the reaction to these, I am dismayed at the apparent double standard. Sure, these are 'designer toys,' but take a look around at any of the most active threads on here and then get back to me.

Whether the art or design aesthetic of Brandt and Olivas appeal to you or not, is a discussion of another matter; if it's not your bag, that's cool. Personally they don't do anything for me, but then, half the stuff on this board doesn't. If these are vinyl "toys" made in Japan, then that is pretty much the only common thread of anything deserving to be mentioned here.

There are a lot of worlds intersecting on SB these days, so let's just be tolerant of whatever. It's all just information anyways. Sure I'd love for there to be way more kaiju threads, but in an category called American Idols, I am hardly expecting it.

^Well put, I agree that these belong here just as much as a lot of other stuff in the American Idol threads.

These look well made but not my thing. I think my largest complaint with most(not all) recent western toy artists is how similar the toys they produce are. I don't mean every artist making similar looking toys. I mean 1 artist making very similar toys repeatedly. These are a perfect example, a cute/snooty baby face sticking out of androgynous animal pajamas. I liked it the first time and all her paintings look amazing(though repetitive too). What I have to question is if the artist is changing, evolving, or repeatedly trying to sell me the same stuff. While I love seeing, and collecting, numerous colorways of the same toy, I like to see what other ideas an artist has to offer.

So many people here get bent when a "Western" artist does sofubi. They act like sofubi is made from ancient Japanese tortoise balls. If I had an ounce of talent I would love to do something in sofubi because I like sofubi. And I'm sure Kathie and Brandt do too. Their figures aren't trying to be Kaiju or anything Japanese at all so I don't see what the fuss is all about. So they wanted to have them made in Japan where they do a pretty good job at it. Big deal. If the sofubi-making companies don't mind the business why should anyone else?

    ^^

I can care less if they or anyone wants to have their products produced in Japan or anywhere else. I can also care less about the whole Western Vinyl thing. It was posted in the proper place. I have some "designer vinyl" in my small collection.

My problem is that they lack any imagination and overall their work (dare I call it that) is sub-par, sophomoric and just plain garbage. I'm not a big fan of contemporary pop (surrealist or otherwise) art though, so no big surprise I would dislike these... Sorry, but these are a big fail in my book

There wasn't 1 person saying that these don't belong here, all that was said, was these toys are derivative and boring. People aren't afraid to say that a RxH release was shitty. It's not a double standard, most people just think this is a bad release, and are speaking their mind.

If they want to make sofubi toys, they should try to make something other than bigger versions of KR minis...

I think Skelves would make a great vinyl platform. I can already see it being a sweet figure for customs.

If you whacked the head of ANY of the REAL sofubi I collect on that Skelve body it might be cool but it's still the same toys in soft vinyl that they were doing in hard vinyl.
Like some guys have already pointed out, time to do something new... I don't get that whole sticking with the same characters for years but I put it down to "if-it-sells-keep-doing-it." Wouldn't you rather keep evolving?
On the flipside, there will obviously be Skelve and (whatever that is) collectors who will go apeshit over this.
I like how the test pull has a little space on the back with "test pull" and the number.
