For fans of the band, how do you feel about the singer becoming a girl? This thread is not to be derogatory...
wait. what? i grew up listening to them in high school. my favorite song of theirs has always been Pints of Guinness Make You Strong, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. The only reason this is slightly weird to hear is because I always thought them to be a rather aggressive band with a bit of a BRO camaraderie going on. This is kind of amazing, really.
I listen to them. I had no idea. It explains some of the lyrics though. He had such a gruff voice, I wonder what if any changes to Against Me's sound will happen.
I'm a fan and this news doesn't change anything for me, except for giving props to Tom Gable for coming out.
I can't imagine how a bands sound can survive the same if there is more than just cosmetic changes involved. As for Against Me, I've always disliked them. Just heard about Life of Agony with the same thing. I have to admit I haven't heard anything from them since the mid 90s, but his voice.... I'm of the belief people should be able to do anything to themselves they want as long as it doesn't negatively affect others.
Laura Jane Grace as tom will soon be known is an amazing life decision for Tom to make... I support it 110%. That said Against Me! won't survive the change and the band won't make it through this and come out alive. Personally the bands sound for me was driven by toms forceful male vocals
Theres no way of telling how her voice will be. Maybe she'll end up with a more power voice as a female singer? Ya never know.
I guess thats true i just feel like (and i've always felt like this) new singer = new band and i don't think against me will endure i feel like name change to fit what will most likely be a sound change is necessary I have nothing but faith in Lauras abilities being as good or even better i just feel that against me! as a band will not be the same so evolution calls for change
I didn't realize this until reading some things last night, but hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery do little to nothing to the person's voice. So it's possible that the band could continue with the exact same sounding vocals, but the singer being female, which would be a bit disorienting. Apparently the full Rolling Stone article addresses the band's future. Should be interesting to read.
that would be odd Tom has a incredibly gruff voice i can't imagine that coming from a woman and it not being off... once agin i can say nothing but supportive thing to laura jane grace and we will really have to see how the rest plays out
It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. I have a lot of interactions with the local trans community because of where I work, and I know that transition is a very hard adjustment; it must be exponentially so when you're talking about someone in the public eye. Yes. Chaz Bono went through it, but.... I don't know. Different kind of fame, I guess? Either way, I wish her luck. Certainly her life is much more important than her band, and I hope that she inspires other people to be more comfortable with who they are.
This was one strange news release. He should do whatever he needs to do to be happy, but I am more than a little curious if it is going to change his singing.
