OKay, I am really not trying to start any fights here, I am actually just fascinated [well, alright, I am disappointed a bit too] by this study. :?

Geography of Hate compiled by students at Humboldt State University.

I find the information rather intriguing. So 'the South' kinda makes sense, but what is going on in the midwest? And it is so interesting to compare the different types of 'hate' expressed, and see areas where they don't overlap. Are people really that angered/hateful towards the disabled that they openly express it? And are all the folks in the western half really welcoming, or is it they are barely tweeting? Arizona is another shocking one, for what I would have expected based on the militant 'border protectors.'

I have so many sociological questions. I mean, hatred exists everywhere, so I am guessing that mean the regions that are highlighted are that much more crazy. Anyways, not trying to say anything from this post, other than to share it. As an outsider I can only say I find it somewhat shocking. :|

I think some of the midwest is still a bit racist. I have some family out there that encounter it. Ive been out there and encountered it to. Its sad to hear that racism is still a huge problem in some parts.

    oh damn!

But in all seriousness, this is focused only on tweeting which to be is very limiting and misleading. Generally, areas where there are large populations of minoritized groups tend to have the most hate towards those groups. You'd be surprised but disability discrimination is starting to become as big of a problem as SES or gender discrimination.
I am actually pretty fucking surprised Arizona looks like an angel state in comparison to the eastern part of the US. Of course that is not true, this is a hate-filled state. There are a lot of backwards nobodys here who hate on everything that doesnt fit their ideals (which is sad).

I didn't snap to the big red dot toward the bottom of NM. I would like to point out that Albuquerque is nowhere near said red dot.

As someone who has never tweeted or read a tweet this is pointless in really knowing anything except that douchebag self important people who tweet tweet horrible things.
    How ironic and surprising.

I am not bashing at all - just sharing the study. And of course it is far from conclusive, you have to take it for what it is. But that doesn't also mean it should just be dismissed either. I don't have a cel phone or tweet or anything either, but unlike writing terrible things online or trolling the internet, this is really putting out your opinion out there, and is generally not anonymous (as is my understanding - since you have 'followers'); I would relate it to getting up in a public space and speaking any of these things out loud.

And in case people thing I am coming from some kind of righteous point-of-view, that is not the case at all - hatred exists everywhere, but it is important to address it. In all forms.

What astounded me when I read the report, was that they actually had to go through the tweets and verify if they were racist in nature or not. That job must've sucked.

The problem here is also that these studies are not being shown to the demographics they are trying to address. I've seen this quoted from the left and out of 'liberal' news outlets, but those that are more prone to engage in this speech of hate are not being exposed to it. Or at least that is the way I have seen it happen.

wow they really limit what/who you can hate in that study, as far as accuracy goes this study is meh, Cleveland and the entirety of Ohio should look like Rudolph's nose, also I love how any hate directed at white folk isn't acounted for because well let's face it everyone hates everyone here in 'Merica
also how did jews and arabs end up not on the hate list?given the current political climate I would imagine the later gets slammed with hateful tweats?

I wasn't singling anyone or anything out, just saying that as things go...
I'm against thought crimes and for free speech.
And as for tweets, there are so many horrible horrible ones that come out from all spectrums that I can't take this seriously.
Just look at the calls for riots and death threats against leaders of both political parties,
against all races from every other race, against bret easton eliss from the gay mafia... ;)

No, I don't think the statement was hateful at all (and was not directed at anyone). Seems to me it is a matter of historical record that the southeastern US has been a hotbed of racism at least for a century and a half. I don't live there, and haven't visited, so maybe I am mistaken. The fact that the Confederate flag is displayed prominently leads me to believe it has not gone away though.

But all that aside, I am making no hateful statements about them, so let me point that out now, and apologise if anyone was offended.

But what I will NOT do is apologise for hating on racists. I make no excuses for how unacceptable I find all of this behaviour.

Understood. I'm going to try to put it into perspective. I have a lot of (extremely) liberal friends in the south who fight this stereotype every single day of their lives. Making a blanketed statement about the south's stance on race based on their history, is sort of like saying I'm a founding father because I live in Philadelphia.

Of course, and I am sorry it came out that way. Since this is a geographical representation, all I meant to say was, a higher concentration made sense, but 100% do I believe this does NOT represent the entire population there. It's another flaw of this study that as far as I can tell it is only based on numbers of occurrences, rather than a percentage of the actual 'tweets' which should also be referred to, and is a more accurate representation of the general populace.

In any case, I think we can all agree that hatred of any one group is wrong. To all my southern, sensibly-minded brethren, I am sorry if there was any unintentional offense.

HAH fair enough. I have a few people in my life that made me aware of my southern stereotyping, so I'm trying to stop because there's a lot of rad southerners out there! Also-regarding the northeast-There's a lot of anger here, so i'm sure some of that hate speak is just people spouting off in traffic and stuff. HAHA.

It essentially a population density map, just like the night map:
    https://earthbuilder.google.com/1044617 ... 4/mapview/

Though it is interesting that The Dalles and Aberdeen are hot spots while Portland and Seattle are essentially "quiet". If they equalized for population differences this would make sense, but that can't be the case given how similar the map is to the night map of the US.

Uh the Confederate flag is NOT racist. Sure it's used by hate groups but that doesn't mean everyone who flys one is racist.

The flag isn't racist, but was adopted by the 13 states that left the Union. They left because their rights as slave holders in the northern states were being ignored. Its not farfetched to have everybody view the flag as racist for that reason alone.

Do you really believe that's the only or even the main reason for leaving the Union?
Edited since i really don't want to get into a pissing match about this.
