Currently reading Berserk but sucks big time that volumes 13 & 14 seem to be out of print from Dark Horse and thus noplace to be found. Used ones goes for ridiculous prices on ebay/amazon. So if anyone knows anyplace which sells those two please advice :)

Those books look great Moog! I'll check them out :)

I don't read a lot of manga, and I don't even like cats but Chi's Sweet Home is full of beautiful watercolour/marker illustrations and it is actually pretty funny.. I think there are maybe 10 volumes available so far?

^^ That looks fun . . . . kinda reminds me of the cover for this little classic :)

Yep, the typical problem for the translated Manga reader . . . out of print books :x

I always wanted to read Berserk myself but the amount of volumes and the out-of-print inflated prices always put me off . . . same as Tezuka's 'Phoenix' series and 'Monster' by Naoki Urasawa

I haven't read Sunny, but that Go Go Monster is great. Really different than I first though when I picked it up.

I've been enjoying Black Jack quite a bit, and recently read 'Barbara' which was also really good.

^^ Yeah, Black Jack . . . i should of started collecting those when Vertical started publishing them.

Barbara sounds good but its out of print already and quite expensive . . . this always seems to happen quickly to DMP books (they obviously do much smaller runs than other manga publishers).

Wow, I didn't know that one was sold out.
I just picked it up at a local shop here a few months ago for retail.
I'll keep my eyes open. If I see one for retail I'll make sure to grab it.

Recently read Dororo by Osamu Tezuka.
    It was fucking awesome!
If you haven't checked it out, you need to.
Reading back through this thread gives me more ideas of things to seek out.

Yuichi Yokoyama is my favorite these days. I really wish there were more people making abstract / "art" comics in general.

    Other favorites:
    Tezuka, especially Phoenix and Dororo.
    Shigeru Mizuki
    Nausicaa
    Suehiro Maruo
    Yoshihiro Tatsumi

Fantagraphics' first Moto Hagio book, "A Drunken Dream" is incredible--weird, moving, sometimes depressing girls comics. I've been reading "Heart of Thomas" which is also good but a little more straightforward.

    https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/784 ... er-stories

One thing I didn't love was the AX compilation that came out a couple years ago. Maybe my expectations were too high, but except for a few stories, I thought it was pretty dull. My only other exposure to "underground" manga was dojinshi many years ago and that wasn't really my thing either.

Seems like the time is ripe for more interaction between US & Japanese comics creators and publishers. Fanta & D&Q have been doing a great job, and people like Jim Woodring and Gary Panter are popular in Japan, but I still don't see a lot of dialogue. Sometimes I think there should be some kind of bilingual online forum for this stuff. I know a lot of small press people in the US but when I talk to them about someone like Yuichi Yokoyama they have no idea. On that front, does anyone know of good weird manga that hasn't been translated that should be?

I thought a fair few of the stories in AX were lackluster too . . . bit of a mixed bag.
These three compilations are less hit and miss . . . .

I can vouch again for Dororo and Black Jack, but who's really going to knock Tezuka?

Has anyone gotten into Shintaro Kago: [IMG]

I got some of the first few Drifting Classroom by Kazuo Umezu and that's one of my favorite manga ever so far. Wow is it ridiculous .

Thanks for the recommendations! That Shiratori comp looks intriguing.

Hino, Kago, & Umezu are great. Hino's art style is so great for horror stories...the layout is really interesting sometimes too. I haven't seen much from Kago lately, not sure what he's up to.

That Shintaro Kago comic with the fourth-wall deconstruction of a manga panel is mind-blowing. That artist is brilliant.

Thanks for the recommendations for the obscure manga compilations, Moog!

Just picked up this amazing book from PictureBox.
Experimental manga artist from the 70s.
Artwork is great. Minimalistic, yet so graphically designed.

And wow, Shigeru Mizuki still making manga!?! I hope they bring this new stuff stateside. Or some fans translations at least.

Just received book 1 and 2 of Triton of the Sea by Tezuka. I knew I would enjoy it, but it's even better than I thought.
