His death hit closer to home than other celebrity deaths. He was a big fan and patron of the type of art most of us are into here. He supported the street artists, graffiti artists, and designer toy people. He was a regular at many of the stores that we all enjoy visiting. It was interesting looking at Instagram and seeing how many friends of mine have pictures with him. And of course every one of them spoke so highly of the encounter with him. He truly was a man of the people.

I'm really saddened by the death of Robin Williams. Over the course of working on four of his films I had the pleasure of getting to know the non-performing Robin. He could be at times very soft spoken and introverted.
We regularly played pranks and laughed till we cried over our love of all things Marty Feldman. We exchanged DVD's and on many occasions would sit down between "takes" to watch them. Sitting one afternoon while shooting "Fathers Day" we sat down together and watched Jumanji. It was fascinating to watch him watch himself on film. One day while working very late he put hundred dollar bills in a bowl and every half hour of overtime he would pull from a bowl that we had all put our names into and when he called your name you got to reach in the bowl and take a hundred dollar bill. He was alway a very giving person. It was regular for him to bring "Make a Wish" children on set and have them sit down with the cast for lunches. When I had my nephew come to live with me Robin made a big deal out of showing him around the set making introductions to everyone. You were a class act Robin. I'll be thinking of our loss for a long time.
    RIP Robin.

The death of someone is always sad, but when you look at the legacy of film, comedy and giving he left, it's hard not to be crushed by his passing.

I was actually surprised at how hard it hit me, since I really don't like large chunks of his career... But I grew up with him, and it made me quite sad. I contributed to this tribute thing on Vice, several talented people there sharing: http://www.vice.com/read/an-art-tribute ... n-williams

Really cool article...yeah, like you I was surprised how hard it actually hit me. Normally you feel "that sucks/that's sad" vibe when celebrities and musicians pass, but this one for sure cut deeper than expected.
Judging by what people have posted on SB and other places, it's clear he was a nice person...big bummer for sure.

Not only was he suffering brutal depression but he was struggling with degenerative parkinson's disease as well.

I constantly have a personal debate over what's more selfish: someone taking their own life, or people trying to convince/force someone to live a life they genuinely don't want. From what I've read, he battled severe depression for 20 years and masked it with alcoholism. Everyone has their breaking point, and he unfortunately seemed to have reached his.

Without going into great personal detail, I still think he's a selfish dick for doing what he did. He clearly didn't give a rats ass about his family. They suffered for years through his depression and the selfishness that goes along with it. He was having severe financial trouble... His family seems to be tethered to that as well. Too bad he did himself in, family can't collect any insurance money to help. Hmmm, insult to injury. Now we're hearing he had Parkinsons... that's truly too bad. What a spat in the face to Michael J. Fox, Ali, Linda Ronstadt and thousands of other celebrities and nobodies who suffer from it as well and haven't done themselves in. All of the reasons, I get it. I for one however, would never act so selfish and leave those who I care about and who care about me in such a swamp of shit he just did.

Am I saddened at his passing? Not really. I'm much more saddened at the murder of Michael Brown.

    ;) Nanoo nanoo mother fuckers

I get that it hits really close to home for you but you are making a lot of generalizations about stuff. Him giving up because he didn't have what it takes to fight two horrible illnesses doesn't spit in anyone's face. You really think those people you named feel insulted that some funny guy they probably never met wasn't as strong as they were? You think that hurts them somehow? I seriously doubt it. You have no idea how he felt about his family or how they felt about him. Maybe the idea of being a huge burden to them once the second illness really took hold of him was what pushed him over the edge. Maybe he thought that his family would suffer more seeing him wither away into helplessness for years before he died then they would if he just ended his own life. We don't really know, so calling him a dick seems kind of unfair. According to his lifelong publicist and friend he had no financial troubles whatsoever.

And addiction. Nobody in their sane mind would make this choice. Instead of blaming and calling names people need to address the illnesses that are causing these issues. You wouldn't call a paraplegic a lazy fuck for not walking and you shouldn't call someone who is struggling with mental illness selfish.

hmmm, i just wonder about the psychology of people who like to take big shits on obituary threads.
It wasn't that long ago you shat all over Philip Seymour Hoffman's.

Apples to oranges. Though I completely agree with focusing attention on the illness(es). But any rational person reading my comments wouldn't assume I was claiming anything different.

No, I wouldn't poke fun or criticize someone dealing with a mental illness. Committing suicide and leaving a family behind with a lifetime of pain and confusion... My statement still stands. Look, I don't live in a black and white world. I'm not dogmatic and I do feel sympathy and empathy for people. But not under these circumstances. Deal with it. Yes Moog, I still feel the same about Hoffman. If that puts my so-called mental state into question amongst a bunch of complete strangers...

You feel differently about the situation, that's cool.

Anyway, this is all moot. Feel free to carry on

Severe depression isn't the same thing as the general and common experience of feeling blue, downcast or beset by worries and frustrations. All humans go through that sometimes; it's normal, but again, it's not the same as chronic depression. Common drug treatments for so-called clinical depression only address part of the problem (if they're effective at all.) At best they help to smooth the ups and downs out a bit and to regulate body functions that have gone out of whack, but they don't necessarily increase mindfulness, solve life's problems, make the self-destructive internal dialogue disappear or generally provide personal strength. All that is ultimately up to the affected individual, who if the case is severe enough, may not be able to pull out of it. Even those with a solid and loving support system may not have the personal tools.

Frequently drugs prescribed for depression make the patient feel like they're in an even thicker fog, decrease ability to concentrate or to feel connected to real life, only compounding the psychological rut. The crux of the pathogenesis is that brain chemistry changes such as L-Dopa and Serotonin imbalances become the norm ... the afflicted doesn't sleep properly, isn't necessarily their normal rational self and doesn't feel in control. It can make a person literally feel like their head is being crushed in a vice and their life is doomed without any route of escape. That's why people who've experienced it use metaphors like "demon" and "monster."

Add onset of Alzheimer's and longstanding on-again/off-again drug and alcohol dependency issues to the mix and you've got a toxic complex that can turn a person into something other than their "real" functional and reasonably balanced self. It's too easy for people who have neither the sufferer's personal experience or sufficient medical understanding to ascribe selfishness where mental and physical deterioration and imbalance exist. Saying that his suicide was a selfish decision doesn't really make sense, in context.

At the time he died, it probably would have been impossible for Williams to be the highly motivated super-sharp "Robin Williams" that his career demanded. Of course what Williams did has a horrible impact on his loved ones. He was a sensitive man by nature and certainly knew it would ... that's likely more a sign of how futile he found his circumstances than any lapse of responsibility, ethics or love. And for what it's worth there are some things known about his practical circumstances that I won't go into here, but I'm sure they compounded whatever despair and suffering the man was experiencing. I'm offering these thoughts not to argue but in hopes of encouraging understanding and empathy.

It was a bit of a shocker news, but i Personally never liked him as actor or comedian, but its always sad to hear news like this. seems like he was a good person. Call him selfish asshole seems harsh, particularly if we dont know him personally and the details around it.

What I can say from a personal experience, is that when you're younger and your big brother commit suicide, leaving a loving family, a wife and 3 kids the first thing you think its exactly that, " what a selfish dick " and you got a mix of feelings, you cant cry about your brother, because you're angry at him, it took me years to realize that maybe I was the selfish bastard, who didnt notice his brother had a big depression, we always think all the crazy things he use to do was because thats the way he is, or maybe because the alcohol, drugs at some point... we tried to help him in many ways, but now i see, damn! alcohol and drugs were not the cause of his behavior, Depression was the cause for the alcohol and drugs, basically we fail on him not the other way. he screw many people for his actions? yes.

he was the best brother , most loving son ever. so, selfish dick? certainly no. Depression is a disease, not a choice, sometimes some people born with it and they never realize that what they have is treatable. I know its seems hard to understand how bad a depression can be.

SO, i never talk about this. but, kinda feel like it was ok. His nick name was "the Cadaver" So good vibes to Robin and my brother wherever they are.

That store has some crazy prices. They used to carry xplus and ashley wood stuff for double ebay prices. Not surprised famous people shop there.

Way back when M1GO had their 1962 Godzila bootlegged (http://www.clubtokyo.org/articles/beaware//bootlegM1G62.php), Heroes Club and their online shop Art of Toy had all of the variants. I always wondered if they might have financed the ripoffs. They also had weird unlicensed 1/20 Maschinen Krieger figures.
