That last scene + death seemed like a cheap shock to me. Was there really any purpose in killing him off?

Not even excited for Season 6... :?

I highly doubt this will be the last we'll be seeing of Jon Snow, with Melisandre conveniently arriving at the wall JUST BEFORE (although his doe-eyed stare only made me wish for Olly to stab him harder and more).

Dorne: WTF, who's writing & directing this crap? The way they beat you over the head with the fact that OMG SHE'S BLEEDING FROM THE NOSE JUST LIKE MYRCELLA before she wipes her lips AND takes the antidote... Also: "You need da bad pussy" - REALLY???

Best moments to me were definitely Stannis's demise and the walk of shame, particularly because of brilliant acting - loved Stannis's annoyed groaning in the face of utter defeat and actually felt more sorry for him than for Eddard Stark who was just a pawn that never saw it coming. Looking forward to see Cersei emerge madder than ever, hopefully burn Dorne to the ground and generally have that Frankenstein-thing break everybody's backs while drinking the blood of Richard Pryce and his nun-cronies!

This actually made me laugh. Maybe because the whole "love interest" between Tyene and Bronn is just an excuse to show some nudity and seems so gratuitous.

Which is fine by me ;) Man if you ever read the reviews on Atlantic they are such prudes, it 'offends' them so much. Makes me laugh. Only in the US can we sell sex so much to the world but nerds here get scared of nudity, calling it sexist and demeaning. Not so much an issue with the rest of the world. Besides, really this is a show based in a fantasy world where life is pretty damn cheap and literally stripped bare bones at times.

I'd never thought I'd root for Cersei but I hope all the Sparrows get whats coming to them. Religious nuts bother me in the real world and fictional world.

    Amen to that! :)
It will almost be worth tuning in next season to see what she has in store for the bell ringing "shame, shame, shame" harpy.

^ Right on. Seeing them fall on their self righteous tookases will be a good watch...

Maybe John Snow will become a white walker. It's Very doubtful, but if he's truly dead, I wouldn't mind it. Especially to see him give it back to his "brothers" of the knight's watch.

Ha, maybe with the last name "Snow", it was a clue all along ;)

I think what is especially unlikable about The Sparrows is they are punishing her for some moral nonsense we don't give a shit about, instead of any of the actual terrible shit she has done. You gotta give Lena Headey props, both for continually pulling sympathy for her awful character, and killing that scene I can only imagine involved her being naked a long time for that very crowded shoot. I actually loled (if only because of South Park) that with 10 minutes left in the season, we got a flaccid weiner. Can't have a season of GoT without one!

Stannis looked like he was going bleed out from his leg, even without Brienne, I thought that was part of his disinterest in participating with her formal charging. Plus i think Jon is going to be the surprise he's back alive character next season ("You know nothing Jon Snow") so I am thinking Stannis is probably really dead even if it happened off screen, not that I wouldn't put it past the writers to be lame and have two surprise not dead characters. I'd think Jon's mysterious mother has to come into play at some point as well.

Arya's story finally revealed some stuff that made sense(ish), though I definitely think they could have handled her arch this season much better overall.

Dorne, lame, obvious, the kiss I mean who didn't see that coming, so so bad. Even with some of the other shortcomings this season, the whole Dorne thing felt like it must have been put together by a separate, terrible production team.

I am going to skip the spoiler tag at this point. Peolpe reading the thread know what's what, else you generally hold off. So, on to the finale. Some quick thoughts,

Castle Black - Well, Jon Snow seeme to be all the news for some reason. His death wasn't really shocking, nor a surprise, but I think it was more that there were few likable/hero characters left to root for [on the show]. You are always expecting some kind of great climax or coming together of the protagonists, but they are leaving one by one. I couldn't really say whether I thought he would come back now or not, or if he even should - it mighten weaken the whole story. Having the Red Woman there was pretty convenient though. One thing I do find odd in this whole thing is the compete lack of Wildlings. I mean, he died for them in the end, so couldn't we at least still have them in story? :|

The North - I think whether Brienne gave him the blow or not, Stannis was resigned to his death. He had lost everything and realised all his mistakes to get to where he was - which was nowhere. Maybe a part redemption on his part, and also pointing towards his importance of 'honour' in this whole thing. Kinda shitty to just have it be a massacre on behalf of the Boltong that ended that whole storyline though. A siege or conflict would have been much more satisfying considering how long has been building up to this. It has been years since the war of kings remember. Reek's redemption was a bit too obvious the way they played it.

King's Landing - Headey really pulled it off, I have to admit. Her performance from both the defiance at the start, to the breakdown of the character during her walk - leading to the "fall" of her ultimately - and right into the likely revenge, was all well done. And I agree with you Yuck (and for what Lixx mentioned) that the Sparrows are a pretty loathable group. Far more righteous and senseless than in the novels I find. It seems less like religious fanaticism than dogmatism and politics.

Dorne - yep. Less please. Played out and unsurprising. Even if that kiss wasn't tiring enough, her acceptance of Jaime as her father is a death sentence. It really doesn't help that I find Indira Varma very difficult to stand.

Braavos - This is a long tutelage, considering the pace that other events happen on the show. Hopefully the lesson is just about learned, Arya needs to become a Faceless Man and get on with some killing/revenge.

Mereen - more Dothraki? I was hoping for a little variety. Oh well, at least we still have Tyrion and the Spider to watch on this show.

Apparently, a lot of that scene was a body double. I did notice some slightly imperfect CGI myself . . .

I totally agree with this . . . Dorne was one of the story lines that was handled quite badly. I appreciate they have cut-down, compressed and
swapped-around a lot of the story but for Dorne it felt very clumsy and rushed.

If i had to bet money, i would say Snow is dead and not coming back. Stannis could possibly be back.

I'm glad Tyrion made it through all the changes in the story . . . if he got killed i would of stopped watching.
He's almost single-handedly the reason i watch GOT.

One thing is certain. The showwriters/Martin have definitely decided to do their own thing. Which is fine and fair, if a bit odd since this is based so much off existing source material.

Does anyone else notice a connection with the way he (R.R. Martin) is handling the whole franchise, seems awfully familiar with another famous George who created a popular franchise? He made something which was nichely popular with a group of fantasy geeks and readers in the 2000s, but since it has 'exploded' he has gone cart-before-horse with the running of it and his own 'creative licensing' on the story and its handling? His to do of course, and at least it hasn't come decades later and at the expense of something else, but I am just interested in all of the parallels (merchandising included).

^^^ as long as we don't find out the White Walkers' powers come from Midichlorians... ;)

I thought the lack of Wildlings was strange as well, I actually had to look up if Tormund had died and I had forgotten.

I was sorta feeling that way about Reek at first, but the more I thought about it, I bought it because Ramsey wasn't actually there at that moment to intimidate him, just some women (remember what a misogynist he was) and Sansa being a symbol to him of the last remaining facet of his life when it was good before he fucked it all up, I think it is believable that the idea of her getting turned into her own "Reek" could be a catalyst for him to act. Also this time he knew there was no "trick" going on, as when he refused to flee with his sister.

The Dothraki felt really tickety tack, just something to give her an exciting ending for the season, though it was about as exciting as a fart after her dragon ride last ep.

I figured there had to be some of that, just because it's standard practice. I had to watch this season lowish quality streaming, so I miss subtle CGI stuff.

^^^ I watched the season over again, didn't notice the first time 'round Sam's line of, "He always comes back" in reference to Jon.

Also I viewed higher quality vids this time, the CGI during Cersei's shaming cracked me up.

So it's been a few days now, I think we can start discussing? I will keep plot points in the spoiler tag for now, but I think it is going to be an interesting season, if only for the being the first time the show is leading the ASOIAF story (if there is such a thing), rather than the books. Of course, the plotlines have deviated quite a bit now, and you might argue they are each their own entity, but ultimately the overarching story is Martin's, and we will be led there first by his outline/script points as they are realised on the show.

    So, diving right in:
I though the first episode was okay. Kind of usual for a season opener, i.e. lots of set-up and reminders of where the various plot points and characters left off. I am not surprised they didn't just resurrect Jon right away, it is going to be a tough thing to handle, without easily pissing people off for throwing it at them like a needless, consequenceless twist (Walking Dead anyone?) All in all I thought it wasn't super great, but I really feel like the show has suffered and faltered significantly the more it has progressed. But still, enjoyable for the most part, and I look forward to seeing where it will go.

BUT, the one thing that I just cannot abide and is really ruining it for me, is the whole Dorne subplot. WTF are the writers even thinking? I get that they didn't, or couldn't, include a lot of the action that happened in the books that was focused there, and so, like all areas of the show, they had to cut come stuff, amalgamate others, and use creative discretion with certain things, but come on. The way they have handled it has been atrocious. None of it really stands up to scrutiny, nor does the viewer develop any sort of caring for what is taking place. Jaime and Bronn's shenanigans in the south were already so poorly received (it seems) last season, and amounted to a whole lot of nothing. Now they have gone in and just thrown shit at the wall and see what sticks. :x

So the portrayal of Ellaria and the sand snakes has been problematic at best, but now I honestly just want to scream at the stupidity. They never have given any justification for their actions, never develop the motivations of the characters, and just throw some 'tough warrior chicks' on the screen to slate the audience. It pisses me off how shallow it has become. Killing Doran(nevermind how they 'killed' Areo Hotah, an incredible warrior, with a puny knife in the back) while his guards look on, is just dumb. No one reacts, either happily or in shock. At all. At the sight of their Prince, who they either lover - or, apparently - hate, but in the very least serve. If they were in on it, then they would have been prepared still and done something, reacted, hell nodded, I don't know. But nevermind, we are given a throwaway line about how all of Dorne hates Doran, to the point I guess where they don't care if their prince is murdered in cold blood, so that makes it okay, I guess? Oh, and this is also their uncle? But Ellaria says so, so whatever right. Grrrr.

And now we get to the even stupider bit. So apparently they have done all this because he sat back (his is also crippled) and did not act [openly] when Elia was killed? Umm, Oberyn, who they are also supposedly avenging, was evidently the most pissed off and torn up over this - and he did nothing.... for fifteen years? But nope, now they are pissed and will take revenge on their own family and rulers for inaction. It just doesn't make any sense. And what is their plan anyways? To rule Dorne as politicians? Become a family of mercenary killers? You kind of have to choose one or the other. Okay, so nevermind that, flashforward two seconds, and apparently not only did Jaime Lannister not return to take revenge immediately after his daughter - who he went to rescue, and deeply loves, was poisoned by the Sand Snakes, taking another of his children - he didn't notice when those same Dornish were somehow on the boat with him or sailing right behind him into King's Landing? Sigh. So then they kill Trystane, in another completely senseless and pointless scene, to throw some idiotic warrior spirit into the Sand Snakes and have an excuse for gore on screen. It is just tiring.

Of course this is all leading to Dorne v. the Lannisters, and setting it all up for Daenerys' alliance, but it was just handled so poorly. Why bother introducing characters, to give them lip service because they had major roles in the books, if only to kill them off in one feel swoop like it was nothing. It almost seems like a FU to Martin's development and begrudging hold to the story and a slap to remind everyone they are doing their own thing. But why ever put them there in the first place? There was plenty of other action in the story they could have spent more time on. I just don't think they really thought this through, or cared. And even for a show with a lot of deaths regularly, as the audience we don't even care or see what the point was. I can't even imagine how it looks if you don't follow the backstory.

Anyways, did I mention I think the whole Dornish plot is portrayed very poorly and stupidly?

That took enough for now, more thoughts on other points if I̶ ̶h̶a̶v̶e̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶k̶i̶l̶l̶e̶d̶ ̶o̶f̶f̶ there is any interest in discussion.

    ^^

I agree the Dorne story-line with the sand-snakes has been a big disappointment. Ayra in Braavos on the other hand has been truncated
quite a bit but handled pretty well, so far. The same goes for Brienne.

For me, i was wondering when we would ever get back to Bran . . . . i thought that the first episode of the new season would feature him
considering he was completely absent from the previous season - but no.

GOT has become Clone Wars to me. I love their parents, ASOIAF/Star Wars, but the children are just content and nothing more at this point.

Yeah, and I can agree. The problem arises in that - for this specific season - we don't know when (or really, if for certain) we will be treated to the next chapter. And I am not even one clamouring or complaining about Martin's writing. But, if, for example, Clone Wars had come along for me in 1992, rather than now/on the heels of the atrocious prequels, I think I would have been actively eating it up, and possibly forgiving a lot of it. Heck, is this just what happened with the EU? Whereas now, like you, I am happy to ignore so much of it as simply extraneous.

And of course I'd like to not be spoiled for an eventual release of WoW, but I don't know when that will come, and who knows how different he might actually make it now, to isolate it from the show. So for now, I am willing to give season 6 a chance.

Wait, what? I thought it was a documentary.

I take this shit just as seriously as I treat little plastic monster dollies, which is to say, not much (but maybe more than an average bloke off the street).

So I binged watched the first 5 seasons in about 2 weeks (just a couple of weeks ago)...my first viewing!

    HOOKED!

I was however let down with the 6th season opener...like others have mentioned, it was just allot of setup/reminders of things that have happened. I did enjoy the ending...just wish that the entire episode was as good.

Without going in to too much detail, the one thing that is open to interpretation, was whether that was a normal nightly routine, or more a sign of giving up/loss of faith. I think my own feelings err towards the former, but I can certainly see both sides of it. I guess we will have to wait to see what the next few episodes bring.
