Pretty cool Greedo portrait! I got into a pretty major tiff with a friend when I accused him of stealing my Greedo one time. Never did find him. My mother (much to my dismay) used to paint the bottoms of one foot of every Star Wars figure I owned with nail polish so no one could steal them. I probably would have rather had them stolen. Was that even a thing that mothers did back then?

I was planning on posting the fig on the left, 'cause I dig it, then I got Charon on the right today, so I thought it appropriate to pair them up. The Charon is a replacement for the one I had as a kid but sadly lost along the way. He's in awesome shape (the only paint app he has is on his face and hands, so I guess that helps). Never have I experienced this much joy from something so small (that's what she said, lol!). Or from something that cost just $20. I find it mildly hilarious that my taste in toys has changed so little in thirty-some years. Oh, and big-ups to @bryce_r for suggesting I could find one on ebay without suggesting I was a total moron for not having worked that one out myself

Is that figure on the right the base for Killer Bootleg's "Phantom Starkiller" figure?? Holy cow that is rad!

In related news, I also just got this in the mail today. A birthday gift from my girlfriend. <3 Got it off a Thrift Books site for half the price of retail, and it's brand new!

Man, great find on the GGGnK book! And at a great price too, I am jealous. I have to really give a special shout out to D&Q for bringing us all their wonderful editions and translations, and am really hoping it continues.

I don't know about the Killer Bootleg you speak of, but he has been used for some other toys as well, including a guy from Sucklord, if I remember correctly. That is the Charon figure, from the most excellent and wonderful film (and coming to life thanks to the absolute genius of Ray Harryhausen) Clash of the Titans. He is from the 1980 line of toys that Mattel released for the movie.

Ha, that is actually a pretty great guy, a nice combining of him with classic SW figures. Half Obi-Wan, half Charon, with some Vader chest plate thrown in for good measure. Plus you have the vinyl cape, too. Though I have no idea why some form of skeleton/ghoul, would need a breathing apparatus or suit modulator, in a robe, but hey, that's just me. :dam:

Holy crap, I was not aware of that boot! I just made in my paints a little  I need to see that Sucklord version, too!
Thanks. They had quite a few on ebay. That one was a mere $20.

This was my comment in the Super7 x SDCC talking about why I wanted one:
I can't actually recall the role Charon (or, the Grim Reaper sans scythe, as he's known to me) took on in my playtime scenarios. It's kind of interesting to speculate on. I'm actually kind of surprised my folks even have me on, now that I think about it. And, yeah, that card art is wicked.

So, this is the "What You Got In The Mail That Isn't A Vinyl Toy" thread and not the "What You Just Got In The Mail That Isn't A Vinyl Toy" thread, right? 'Cause this I bought years ago. I did a forum search for BJDs and to my stunned amazement I didn't get any results. I'd admired these thing for years before I decided to get one. I found one of the cheaper ones that I liked, but since I didn't really know what I was doing, It came to me bald and nude. I had a slight panic for about a day that I'd bought a boy and not a girl (I'm cool with buying a doll, but there are points at which even I draw the line). All totaled it ended up costing about $350, I think. Which, since at the time I was an action figure collector and the most I'd spent on a toy was about $30 on a Monev the Gale, was a massive investment for me. Anyway, I hadn't even picked this thing up in a couple years. It's pretty hefty and the limbs have a nice springiness to them. It kind of feels like the joints are getting less stiff and it requires a little more effort to stand her up. "Restringing" is a thing I've heard about as apart of doll maintenance and you can do it yourself, but it looks enormously tricky and complicated to me. It was made by a Korean company called Lutz.

Anyway, my curiosity in the BJD scene was pretty much sated with this purchase. A little later I did buy a Pullip, but that wasn't a big deal. So you guys like dolls or what? :D

I'm not into these but I have friends that collected them for years, all Volks BJDs. That is one expensive hobby that people get super into. My friends were normal about and just have theirs sitting around on shelves, it but it can attract some really unusual fans - the strangest being ones that have meet-ups and have names for their dolls and treat them like kids  If you even try to touch one of their dolls without asking it's like starting a fire apparently.

Yes, it is. Really dodged a bullet on that one!
I remember this from when I used to peruse those forums. It gets deep. I think my mom had asked me what I'd named this one. Not really something I would've considered.
Ha. The only time I've seen someone with a BJD in real-life was at local B-more tourist trap, the Inner Harbor. I was sitting on a bench with one of those nerdy black guys, who was pretty overweight. He was having a detailed discussion with an (I think) Asian girl in elaborate Lolita dress (which was really weird to see there anyway). I could tell from their convo they weren't acquainted. The Lolita had a full-sized BJD with her, which she allowed the guy to have sit on his lap during their somewhat long exchange. It was an odd little scene. I wondered a little how much of his interest in her cultural trappings was genuine and how much was based on her ample cleavage, leg and sexualized fashion. Like I said, he was pretty nerdy, so he was probably legit. I feel like I might be being a smidge racist here, not really my intention.
Should I take the fact that you didn't suggest it's immediate violent destruction as an indication you're leaving a tiny little door in your heart open where a possible change of opinion could take place? No? OK, then.

Ok first off, Lolita is absolutely not a sexualized fashion. I've been wearing it since 2003 - I don't wear it every day, but it's a hefty part of my wardrobe. We hear this a lot, collectively, as a group, and nothing makes us more irate. There is ZERO inherent sexuality in the fashion. Like any other hobby, there may be a few people that think of it that way, but the overwhelming majority of wearers are just doing it to wear cute or elegant dresses, end of story, and they usually want to be left alone while wearing it. Also if you saw a girl with cleavage or leg showing, she wasn't wearing lolita in the first place. Because 95% of the time can't see either of those things visible while wearing this style.

I don't usually tell people I wear the fashion because of the looks/remarks I get, and people tend to pigeon-hole you into a type of Japanese cultural fandom, but yeah don't ever think it's sexual, it isn't. It's just fun clothing people wear.

I honestly can't think of any high fashion, particularly a female-based one, that doesn't have at least some element of sexuality, Lolita included. As someone who's involved in fashion as a lifestyle, I'm not sure how you can honestly claim there's "ZERO inherent sexuality" in any kind of fashion. If it's an element you or others in the scene are unaware of, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Cuteness and elegance are both often sexy, rest of story.
It seems to me a bit dubious, and perhaps a even naive, to deny that how we choose dress is a form of social communication, and communication by definition is a not a one way street. I realize that some members of the public receive messages from Lolita fashion that are not existent in Lolita culture itself, and I'm sure that's annoying and perhaps even disturbing, but to claim indignance to any reaction from the public to what is a fringe and somewhat outlandish style of dress seems a little conflicted to me.
You may have a point here. The incident took place many years ago and I don't have a clear image of the girl in my mind, so I was using some hyperbole, or perhaps creative license to express how incredibly sexually she was, dressed in Lolita fashion. I apologize for that.

Funny. I just finished reading about the Pin hunting quest they recently revived at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. Pretty cool pins in the collecton, but I dunno if it'd be worth dropping $80 on for the whole shebang.

A phrase all us toy folk are accustomed to hearing ;)

So what does BJD stand for? Are these the same as the fashionable big eyed dolls, and the J's maybe the initial for a word related to "eyes" in French?.. Although from some of these stories, "blow job doll" could also be right.

Nope, it actually stands for ball jointed doll. Ball jointed dolls go back a ways, but generally the the term refers to the modern Asian variety. They have ball and socket joints that are strung together internally. Big eyed fashion dolls like Blythe and Pullip don't have ball and socket joints, but their aesthetic is similar and I'm sure there's some crossover as far as collectors go. They don't have any origins in France, as far as I know. Wikipedia claims that the modern BJD scene originated in Japan and was influenced in part by Hans Bellmer's ball jointed doll sculptures, which I did not know:

I just went to look at Hans Bellmer's doll creations, and find them (relatively) shocking. Such extreme retakes on physiology. A lot of my favorite art makes me a little uncomfortable-- art like Hans' that is unorthodox and generates some emotional response. I like the idea of such extreme art influencing the development of an entire related branch of art. Thanks for turning me on to something I didn't have much appreciation for previously.

I doubt I'll ever buy one, but I'll probably appreciate them a little more.

    Don't mention it!

Bellmer is most well known, by a wide margin, for his doll photography, but his drawings and etchings are even more interesting, I think. I find them even more psychologically aggressive and disturbing than the doll stuff, and as far as drawings go, they're some of my favorites. It doesn't really look like Google is turning up many decent-sized images, but you can get an idea. I was pretty surprised to learn he had something with the start of the current BJD scene, as I'd admired his art well before I found out about BJDs. Wikipedia only mentions the connection in passing, but I'd love to know more of the specifics.

And hey, I just got some non-vinyl stuff in the post as I was typing this, so we aren't in danger of getting thrown off for being off-topic! These are a couple things I ordered from the Runny Bunny. I've posted the two previous things I got from her, both ceramic deer with children's heads. One has a crown. She announced on Facebook she was cutting her production way back because she'd decided to go to school of some sort, which I was a little sad to here. This led to a kind of going out of business sale, because she needed to clear out her studio. She put up a lot of odds and ends. Broken, weird and unfinished stuff. I've spent a big chunk of my life around graffiti writers, and I just found the intersection of this person who does unrelated crafts having this spray can art for sale amusing. It says NO BLANK WALLS on it, so there's no question it's a graff nod. In fact, I just noticed the bandit rabbit has a spray can in his holster. It's actually spraying paint, so I guess he literally "shoots from the hip". I think this is the first time I've ever bought something that someone'd actually drawn/painted that wasn't a repro.

The other piece is the strangest thing I've ever seen from her and I love it. I grew up on the water and the house I lived in was oversaturated with decoy ducks, sailors and all manner of other nautical motifs, which I found pretty trite. So, this is a delightful corruption and subversion of that stuff, while also providing a bittersweet nostalgic reminder of it. The choice to color only the single, deformed hand elevates it a bit, I think. I don't know anything about ceramics, but it seems like she puts a lot of work into these one-off creations. Come Christmas I'm going to wrap it up and Indian give it to my mom for a laugh. The two items were $36 together, including shipping
