According to the website, neither Lulubell or KaijuMonster are coming this year (and Lulubell didn't come last year, either). Considering that together they make up about 95% of my toy purchases at the convention, I truly wonder if I'll be buying anything toy-related at all this year. Anybody else notice this? Are there any other regular presences that also aren't coming this year(I know Grass Hut/Bwana Spoons didn't have his own booth last year, either)?
Been attending for 4 years now and I agree. I think with dcon so close a lot of artists or stores are waiting for that. Probably cheaper to get a booth. Dcon just updated their website and this year is amazing. They actually using another building to hold vendors.
Never been to NYCC but im sure its about money now. The booths at DCON are pretty cheap, weekend passes are cheap, the hotels around there arent getting crazy marked up yet either. Im sure its also way cheaper for the Japanese artists flying to California than New York. Lulubell can drive a couple hours out to CA as well instead flying all the way out.
NYCC sort of got to big for the venue. In the process the booths cost more and sell out faster. Same for tickets and hotels. It just became more work than pay off.
NYCC is a huge venue. It's the closest con to me, and I never even went once just because I hate crowds so much. Why clamor over tons of cosplayers, comic fans, and other con-goers when I can go to a small venue or gallery? At least that's from my buyer's perspective. I'm sure from a selling standpoint, it's a headache and a half as well.
Super7 will be there and will hopefully announce a couple more sofubi releases. Rampage Toys will be at the Tenacious Toys collective and sometimes Tenacious will sell sofubi for other artists too. myplasticheart will be there with some releases. Clutter will have a Bwana release and hopefully other stuff too, they did a Restore release and a Splurrt last year. I've attended the past 4 years and definitely noticed the sofubi presence decreasing each year, but there is still some stuff happening. Also, Bwana pop-up in Brooklyn on Saturday and MVH on Sunday in CT so I'm pretty pumped!! P.S. - There is already a NYCC thread in the Tourist Go Home section.
Tenacious Toys always has a huge booth, and has various guests. Not much sofubi, but maybe some things off the radar of the main NYCC site http://www.tenacioustoys.com/collections/nycc-2016
Just posted this over in the actual NYCC thread but since this one is getting more attention figured I'd re-post it here as well: Here's a list of sofubi artists / sellers at NYCC 2016 that I made. Did I miss anything? Super7 (booth 126) Rampage Toys (at Tenacious Toys booth 309) GUUMON (at Tenacious Toys booth 309) myplasticheart (booth 113) Bwana Spoons (at Clutter booth 603) Splurrt (at Mishka booth 402)
Yep, very unfortunate the timing with the con being only a few weeks out. A tough spot to be in. I had it out with Greg, and rather than scramble for a new set up weeks out, decided to stick to the plan and stay with Mishka. Greg is doing what he can to make things right... it is what it is. Half the stuff I had planned won't make it anyway .But will still have a lot, Cadaver Kids a micro run of twins, Shinjuku Demons, Cinema Monsters, Kronos.
@JoeMan glad you will atleast be showing. I'm very interested in finally seeing secretoy stuff in person.
Very light, I have seen more pics of the City of NY and food from collectors than actual toys from the Con
Haha, that is too funny. Today was a gastronomic adventure of nyc on my IG (and the occasional TPTF stuff mixed in - however I'm not complaining, lots of my favorite places to eat captured). Tomorrow..
With all of the shit that went down last month with certain "flippers" in Japan, I'm not sure how this header card is supposed to be interpreted?
If there's anything more offensive than flipping another artist's work for profit/taking away one-offs from real collectors, it's a flipper putting an anti-flipping image on their own toy. Although, it is the Splurrt version so maybe Joe did the artwork for it.. in that case it is a pretty nice jab!
