I think in general the rarest piece would be the Marusan, but it is a magnificent set with two of my favorite bootlegs, which are still on my want list; Flying Attack Human and Fireman.
    Went for: 82,009 yen

@Alebrije - Nice posts, Roger. That Ultraman talker looks amazingly huge.

Btw, did you see that another repainted Bandai reissue Bullmark MechaGodzilla sold for over 40K JPY? I just don't understand why they are going so high now, unless people really think they are getting a steal on an original Bullmark.

I saw it too Mark, but It seems to me that this last Mechagodzilla had poorer painting work than the previous one, because in some parts you could see a smooth layer of spray. Apparently people still think it's a vintage Bullmark, because it does not make sense to me that someone wants to spend 40,000 ¥ on a reproduction.

Roger, fully agreed. I have wanted to pick one up just for fun, as I collect bootlegs and customs, but I passed on one at 5K JPY a few years ago as I felt it was too expensive at the time, haha. Oh well, I'm happy with my M1GO reissue for now, unless the stars align some day and I am able to land the real deal. It is near the top of my big dream list.

I also thought the same with the last one, I wanted to take it but as a curiosity, as what it is; a bootleg. But I did not plan to pay more than ¥ 6,000 for it.
Good luck with the Mecha hunt, I do not doubt that you will soon give us the surprise ...
    Best regards!

Thanks, but I just posted a surprise in a different vintage thread. ;) The MechaG will have to wait quite a while now!

Wow Roger, that is come crazy set. I am not surprised at all it ended that high, that Marusan Pharaoh is such a true grail piece, at least for me. Even in this size, it is a real prize. What a great lot altogether though. Both the FAH and Redman with this transparent helmets are so great. You'd have to be a heavy hitter to get in on it, but boy would I love to have been.

As to the painted MGs, not sure what the deal is there either. Maybe someone once had luck with a mistaken auction, or they know something we don't. Or, maybe they just have a whole lot of money to play with, in the extremely rare (and highly improbable) event that one of the original figures was misidentified and they can gamble on that. Seems a lot to spend on any figure, that like you, I only view as a custom, and generally a personal/model hobby kit one at that.

@ultrakaiju Steve It can be said that in general the set was in very good condition, the seller says he had them stored in a box for years and recently found them. It seems to me that only the helmets have lost some paint, I think of some reaction of the painting that they used and many years of storage.

@deafmetal Mark attached this video of an original Mecha that may serve as a guide.
In the same channel have more videos of vintage figures.

Mark; pffffft, what does that guy know about Ultraman toys; I mean, really.

Thanks @chimply.kaiju! You know, I thought that might have been the case, but didn't want to jump to any conclusions. I really appreciate the connection though. He [Kii-san] has posted some really excellent review videos - I am sure a lot of use come across them all of the time - and knowing this makes things a heck of a lot clearer. And really, he deserves the credit (which is unfortunately lacking for a lot folks, simply due to language barriers). So let me just say here, thank you to Ryuuji!

@chimply.kaiju - Thank you for posting the auction link, Anthony. I was afraid you all might tire of repeated postings of bootleg MechaG repaints. ;)

@Alebrije - Thanks for the YouTube link, Roger! Looks like a great resource. I find it really hard to believe that Bandai went to so much effort to differentiate their other Bullmark reissues, such as different vinyl colors, and switching the Bullmark stamp to the other foot on Godzilla, etc., but then they let the big cheese MechaG slip through the cracks with the same vinyl color and engravings, which seems to have created a repaint bootleg racket, haha. Conspiracy? ;)

Bullmark Giant Twin Tail Big Soft Vinyl At the time?
I was tempted by this one but I had my doubts, because I am not an expert in this type of figures. I know that there is a vintage flesh color version, but I do not know if they also made flesh color bootlegs of the Twin tails and that it was repainted.

Looks like it could be the real deal, just with some significant wear and/or slight paint variation? I chase the giants when funds and the opportunity permits, but like you I am certainly no expert. Hope others that are more knowledgeable weigh in.

I agree, it looks legit to me.
the giant size is on flesh vinyl, and the paint wear/fade seems to be consistent with what you'd expect

The two toys Mark is holding are huge for me. The costumes, the sculpts, the sewing, all of these components evoke better-than-Mego early 70's goodness in it's highest form. The head sculpts are not my favorite, but overall I would say few toys have stuck with me like this as the photo from Yuji's book is burned into my brain forever. I wish there were more toys that were composed like this; it's why I have collected as many Nakajima nodders as I have. All of the little components, the boots, gloves, suits, etc, make for such an exciting experience. It reminds me of the time in late 1998/early 1999 when I was working in a factory/mill with a mold making shop. It wasn't a week into my job that I had brought a vinyl nodder glove into the mold shop to try and get an idea of how to make them for myself. I remember the top mold guy being fairly stumped, not being familiar with rotocasting plastisols. The proportions of the Henshin Cyborg toys just never did it for me, but I have to admit I have always loved seeing any and all doll-like approaches brought into representations of these characters. These two toys seem the pinnacle of this "dolly" take on Ultraman and friends and I just dig the hell out of them.

Another bagged and sealed OG Marusan Kong sold for 150K JPY:

I dug around a bit, and I'm thinking the seller might have a box of dead stock Kongs that they dip into when they want to test the market for cash. The seller sold a similar sealed Kong in July '16 which also went for the minimum bid of 150K JPY, and also another one in December '15 that went for 238K. Kobe Toy also sold a sealed Kong for 232K in January '16. That's quite a few popping up in less than two years, and three from the same seller. I still want one though, so hopefully they keep showing up and the prices keep going down. ;) It's a fantastic piece of both Marusan and King Kong Giant Gorilla toy history:

^Hot damn, I was trying to picture how much the OG would be. And you were right about that new metallic blue colorway being a homage to the OG. Very nice, I'm glad I stuck with collecting new Marusan so I can look forward to finding older issues. That Giant Gorilla is one of my grails for sure along with reclaiming my old anraku sets.

@decypher - It's a fantastic-looking toy, especially with the original printed bag and header card. I also like that 450-size reissue with the tribute colors. The loose OG's go for about 50-60% of what these sealed ones are going for, which is still a very steep amount of money for a vintage toy.

Such a killer set man, and the early Goji artwork is really great (part of the reason I also love the 'maquette' toys so much). Ah well, at least I can keep coming back here to enjoy the pics of this one at any rate. ;)

Anyone know anything about the make and release name of some of those robots on the left? I've wanted to get into robots but don't know where to start besides tetsujin28 etc.

That is pretty fantastic. The best part - I mean aside from the obvious joy of having Batman and Robin ride around in a non-Batmobile toy - is their very pleased with themselves expressions. This is clearly after they foiled one of the Penguins' pernicious plots!
