Fuck. I just heard a song by the Cranberries on Lithium (Sirius XM station for 90s grunge) a few days ago driving back from an appointment, and I remember asking my mom "Why don't women do this anymore? You know, sing rock music, and just sing the damn notes? Everyone wants to show off their voice by trilling like a bird, or they sing really hard rock. But it's like nobody just does THIS anymore." And now this. Man, this just makes me sad. Too early to go.
Always sad when Angels die. I agree wholeheartedly Maddie, she sang her words from the heart and was amazing to see live. So many fake bullshit "artists" use gear to create a voice. If it can not be done raw, it is not worth doing. I really hope it was not suicide, she battled metal health issues a long time. I respected her so much more knowing that she struggled. It is a fucking disgrace that so many psyche meds increase thoughts of self harm and that fact is very well documented. Bastards. Rest in Peace
Sad news, gone too young. She really had a unique voice and the Cranberries brought something new and different to the late '80s early '90s scene. Not to everyone's tastes perhaps, but so much the better for it; especially in an era [i.e. now] where we are inundated with nothing but completely mainstream, overproduced, non-descript 'artists,' one should appreciate that sort of experimentation. RIP.
It's a shame. 46 is so young. My thoughts are with her family and bandmates. We have all of their albums from over the years. They just released an acoustic best-of album last year. I thought that No Need to Argue was their best.
They do, every day, but there's just no room on commercial radio for anything but pitch adjustment and canaries. Sad news. That first record may have been the bane of my '93, but I haven't heard a note of hers for the past 25 years. I'd bet I could find some personal gold in the rest of her career. Tragic that this is what it took for me to consider a reassessment. Useless though it always is, my heart goes out to her peoples and her fans.
Far far far too young. The Cranberries killed it live. Dolores was electric and performed with such fevered commitment! New jacks could definitely pick up some tips on how to seriously engage an audience, take them to the edge, and then hold them in the palm of your hand.
That's the saddest thing about the music industry these days... you can't find good music unless you really go digging for it, because the only "music" being shoved in your face is what they want you to hear. You have songs written by a team of 10 or more writers made specifically for a "singer" who becomes the industry cash cow, while those that don't fit the profile of pop get brushed aside. Write your own music, lyrics, and play your own instruments? The music industry doesn't give a hoot. Unless you're doing what they think will make money, you aren't getting a contract. Meanwhile people with raw talent are struggling to market themselves on YouTube, Bandcamp, Patreon, and other sites as well as local concerts. It can be exhausting to navigate all those sites just to find new music. I miss the days when radio stations could thrive off of playing things other than pop. I think it was '99 when the last "good" radio station around where I live closed down. Used to play a good mix of 80's, 90's grunge, and late 90's techno/electronic music. Couldn't compete with the arrival of the boy bands and Britney.
I don't want to derail from the main thread topic much, but this is a generalization that doesn't 100% apply. I'm not arguing that there isn't a poppier element to alternative radio nowadays, but "digging" for music isn't that hard either. Apps like Spotify and Pandora can be tailored to suit tastes. Sirius does have a lot of great radio shows on their channels for new or indie or retro or whatever artists. Don't like AltNation? Check out SiriusXMU. I sound like an ad, but my point is manufactured pop-stuff can be avoided easily...Much like Funko Pops. Also, good current female-lead bands? Sleater Kinney and Garbage. (Although I do need to check out Filthy Friends.)

in the last 15-20 yrs this is common place and not trying to be harsh but getting pretty sick and tired of those that od on pharma drugs. 100% preventable in my opinion. Mixing meds is a recipe for disaster that will continue until those wake the fuck up. I'm getting a little tired of the excuses.
Not preventable if it was a purposeful OD aka a suicide. You have to realize that someone can laugh, spend time with family, and be making plans one day, and be dead the next by their own hand. Depression isn't a cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all affliction. Some people experience apathy, some experience perpetual sadness, and some experience swings. There is unilateral depression, bipolar depression, situational depression, treatment-resistant depression, episodic depression... fuck the list goes on and on. You can't keep everyone who is depressed in a bubble to protect them from themselves. It'd be inhumane. That's why urging people to seek help is so important. The best prevention is the offer of aid as an option to make the pain stop, as opposed to taking your own life.
