So because it didn't turn you into a murderer/sex fiend, you'd now think it was a good idea to suggest to your 10 year old son that you sit down and watch Project A-ko together?
Anyway, I was talking about anime that is actually intended for children. Different times, different "culture" - things like sexual jokes in something that's otherwise completely suitable for a 7 year old.

To answer your first question that would be a hell yes.

Well I guess it really depends on how raunchy and actual physical those jokes get. Are we talking about cleverly hidden sexual jokes or full on straight in your face vagina and dick jokes?

See, on one hand, I'm not really interested in anime meant for kids...and on the other hand, I'm not terribly concerned about the "adult" nature of a lot of scifi anime from back in the day. I should have been more clear: when I said "shareable" and mentioned my family, I really meant that I want stuff that's accessible to folks who aren't necessarily in the hobby. So it's less about age-appropriateness. Like, adult themes notwithstanding, I don't want to watch an anime with my daughter...and have her think it's "weird"! Genre tropes of any sort are usually pretty fucking distracting to those not used to them (example: homophobic lyrics in underground hip hop that make certain songs not okay to bump in public). Ultimately, I want her to be able to appreciate those bits and pieces of ground-breaking genius that we all loved about old anime growing up!

For example, I'd love to watch Dougram with her at some point (when she's old enough to grasp war, death, and tragedy, of course). Even though it's technically a genre piece (as a war story/mecha anime), it's highly accessible, y'knowmsayin? One doesn't need to be INTO anime to enjoy the mature political story-telling aspects...or the amazing visual design of the mecha and how they move and fight.

On the other hand, I once tried to watch Nadesico with an old girlfriend of mine...and it was a disaster. We had to pause, like, every 5 fucking minutes just to explain some dumb anime trope or some aspect of Japanese pop culture that was necessary to understand what the fuck was going on. We barely made it two episodes in. Y'all feel me?

That's pretty much what I originally meant with "weird Japanese shit"; I wasn't just recommending you child-safe anime. They're accessible like Ghibli is, probably moreso.

If we are having the "watching Project A-ko with a 10 year old" debate, though, the hiphop analogy is perfect. I enjoyed it age 10 and don't think it warped my mind (much), and I wouldn't be particularly concerned about a 10 y/o listening to it (pleased, in fact), but would feel weird actively recommending it to one. Same way I wouldn't give a 15 year old a toke on my spliff. It's more something you discover for yourself, IMO.

Have any of you seen the original Tekkaman (NOT Blade) in its entirety? What an incredible sci-fi epic. Cashaan is another I love dearly. These less-popular (aint no Gatchaman!) Tatsunoko sci-fi hero epics from the 70s are quite good. Only one I can't really sit through for more than an episode or two at a time is Hurricane Polymar.

Never did actually get into Battle of the Planets as a kid...weirdly, I think it was something about the bell bottoms and older animation style put me off to it! But I'd love to check out Cashaan or Tekkaman someday...

It was great to get back into tigermask anime since the 80s.

I grew up watching tigermask 2 anime so the art style of tiger mask 2 is my favorite.

Dragon Ball is old school now right? Dragon Ball Super has been on for awhile now and the superior dubbed English version is out as well. I just had to post about it since the first episode made my eyes water. DBZ, only in English, is my favorite anime. Yeah it has a lot of cons with the pacing and taking forever to do anything, but overall the show gives me that type of bliss people always talk about. Goku as a hero is perfect in every way, the only fictional character I wish was real. The latest episode of Super was insane and probably the most heartbreaking of anything anime related, at least for myself. Sorry to nerd out, I just don’t think anything has ever made me as happy as Dragon Ball returning. Ever.

Did you see the two movies that came out around the start of Super? I thought the first one was great and pushed all the nostalgia buttons; the second was just ok. I believe the second movie storyline was also covered in the Super TV series.

I'm a little sad that they basically eliminated GT from canon. I didn't think it was all bad.

No I didn’t think about watching the movies for whatever reason. I’ll have to check them out.

Man I couldn’t stand Pan in GT, her voice was too much for me.

    Macross 7's better shit. ;)

Right now, I'm on a bit of a Gundam kick. I just got caught up on Gundam the Origin (well, not the final episode that JUST dropped in Japan) and the two Gundam Thunderbolt movies, so that prompted me to go back and watch the original series again. Pray for me. Honestly, I may suck it up and go on to watch Zeta and ZZ afterwards...but who knows if I'll have the intestinal fortitude to handle it...

Another old school jam I've been really meaning to get into is Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I've heard nothing but amazing things about the series, and in fact, I've heard people refer to it as the greatest of all time. Plus, I'm a sucker for political space operas!

Goku is going to be in this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the first ever manga/anime character to have a balloon. I wonder what percentage of viewers around the world will know/not know what a "Goku" is....

Battle of the Planets was my favorite when I was younger! I always thought that the animation style and artwork was super cool compared to cartoons like Super Friends.. I couldn’t have been more than five or six years old when I discovered Battle of the Planets. Plus BOTP had kick ass robots and spaceships compared to cartoons that originated in the US..

I just started watching BOTP again, it seems like they’ve got most of the episodes on YouTube.

I've been watching Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos. Theres a great blu-ray set out from discotek media.

i grew up watching Hanna Barberas Challenge of the Gobots, so to see these characters as intended is a real treat!
