I used to draw a comic strip called 'Bad Teeth' in a music magazine over here in Brisbane. I haven't drawn these guys in maybe 5 years but a little project came up recently so I revisited them. Getting back into this style was a struggle at first but I came around after a few days. View this post on Instagram
I found a Sharpie Magnum and I can never pass up this sweet chisely chunkiness, so I took 5 minutes and slapped a Woo onto some newsprint.
So that Woo drawing I did was only the beginning apparently. I wanted to try my hand at bringing his hairy majesty to life in finger-puppet size polymer clay.
Woo is tight man! Great work on that, all the textures look very well thought out and properly executed. Hands are hard to sculpt (and draw) for most folks but these are perfect. Bang out a Namegon!
@abelincolnjr @kichigai Thank you guys! I had been playing around with that Aztec Jaguar Warrior sculpt so much on my computer I wanted to take a step back and jump back into playing with actual clay for a change. I underestimated how challenging sculpting hair could really be!
@MisterYuck Welcome. Quick tip on sculpting hair, use a good old fashion comb! Works quick but you still have lots of control and can apply your style any way you do. You did a fine job as is tho!
@MisterYuck Andy, those Woos are killer!!! A man after my own heart (no, really, give it back you big meanie!) Absolutely love that sharpie drawing, and you've rendered him so well in clay too. He looks just like an up-sized keshi version of the hairy fella. Keep these coming - and hit us all up when you offer a 'production' run.
@ultrakaiju @abelincolnjr if all goes according to plan, I hope to include mini-Woo in the shipment to Japan alongside the Lewis Chessmen pieces that I commissioned from a friend in Mexico and the Jaguar Warrior sculpt. Fingers crossed. I'm really happy you all like him so much. Makes me want to try my hand at more minis!
In the meantime, I have to share your package artwork from your donation box to the Sb Holiday Raffle last year. I've been meaning to post this since last time. If I didn't like them so much, I'd cut out each side and put them in as bonuses in this year's raffle. Sorry, guys, you're just going to have to dig the images for now
Rampage posted the other day about a contest and I took it as a personal challenge so I moved a little further outside of my comfort zone and am currently trying my hand at creating my own rendition of Rampage's Ugly Unicorn character. I hope he likes it once it's done.
Oh wow @hellointerloper, that package is as good as any mail day, and the box alone makes me smile. Thank you for doing this, and thank you JP for sharing it. It actually definitely deserves to be immortalised in the 'Mailed art' thread. Wonderful interpretation, @MisterYuck! I can only see Jon getting such a pleasant and honoured kick out of seeing this rendering of his little creation. Well done, good sir. I love the proportional play you had with it, and my favourite part is his toes. You are really doing some phantastic mini sculpting.
Oh my bad, @ultrakaiju . I didn’t even think about that thread and it definitely needs some new additions (not to be confused with the group “New Edition”).
I just kept looking at those stupid eyes and was not happy with that. I walked away for a solid six hours, drank a couple Cisco beers and came back. It's crazy how drastically different it is now. Right or wrong, I'm pretty into that muppet nose.
Ha, I can see it - that, or evil Garfield. Personally, I prefer the first eye version, but I just love goofy/derpy figures.
No I totally get you. I’m not happy with those eyes either. I think I’m just going to leave the face blank and stick googly eyes on it.
