I initially "finished" the game on PC, before I picked up a Switch. I was working on the last DLC drop when Dark Souls came out.

Oh tight! I wanted it on PC ever since seeing it but decided to wait the long year for the Switch release. Happy I did; it livened up a lot of boring train rides and the developers did a beautiful job with the port. I've now tried and failed to get into Dark Souls three times, so I'm probably skipping out on that one, but I'm very excited for Sekiro!

It really is a stellar port. The switch is my go to for indie games. If you love Hollow Knight and like soulslikes I'd also suggest hyperlight drifter!

As for dark souls I started with 3. It is beautiful, and plays faster than the remaster. It took some time for remaster to grow on me. The first few hours can be a slog if you don't know what you're doing because the paths you can take branch an awful lot. For a new player I'd recommend rolling a cleric (str/faith), since the mace is a ridiculous weapon and healing spells help an awful lot. For starting gift, grab the key for faster access to powerful items. Run a 100% shield. Until you get used to the game, being able to block is huge. Up Dex just enough to use a bow. The bow is for peeling guys off of mobs and whittling away at fatties from a distance. Then pump health to avoid getting OHKO'd. Increase your carry weight and wear lighter armor until you can mid roll since mid rolling makes you briefly invulnerable. Now the game will be way more tolerable. Pump strength and faith to increase DPS, don't forget to level your weapons at the blacksmith, and remember that dark souls it not a hack n slash. It rewards patience, persistence, and pattern recognition. I know it's a lot of time to sink, but if you clear the church gargoyles and still hate the game, then it's probably not for you. On the other hand, if you do, you've almost certainly got what it takes to finish the game.

If you really want magic, start with pyromancy. It scales to an item and not to a stat so you can do a ton of damage without wasting stats if it turns out you prefer the ol' sword and board.

It really is a hell of a game even if it's not your cup of tea. I love it.

Hahaha of course! I love pretty much all things nightmare fantasy so I shill Dark Souls hard. This is more or less the distillation of countless hours reading guides, lurking in forums, and chilling in chat rooms while I pound my head on a wall after respawning at the same damn bonfire for the millionth time. From does not hold the players hand at all, which is great in some ways and terrible in others. Heck, theres an entire stat that is completely useless in DS1 and you can easily blow thousands of souls leveling it before you learn it does almost nothing and theres no way of rerolling.

    Spoiler:

    It's resistance. Never level resistance.

Glad to see the love for Hollow Night. For sure my game of 2018.
Never attempted the White Palace though - that is just too much for me.

I downloaded a little game called Bad North.
Pretty fun, gets a little frustrating since a minor mistake often means game over but it is the right game if you just have a few minutes and like tower defense kind of games with a little roguelike spin.

Also, finally the last Booster Pack for Isaac: Afterbirth + has been released for the Switch!

I'll have to give those titles a look! White palace is frustrating but very doable. I'm a slouch at gaming but I was able to clear it in an hour or so *with the right charms*. I'd say it's way easier than some of the games hidden boss fights.

The Broken Vessel took me god knows how many attempts over four or five hours. Worse than a Souls boss. Then again I also stubbornly resisted upgrading my nail until he was dead.

Upgrading your gear before boss fights is for rookies. The pros kill the boss without upgrades, then lose all of their money falling into spike pits on the way across the map to their chosen vendors

I beat CrossCode during my week off for the holidays, and I enjoyed it even more than the other game I beat last year (God of War).

I cannot say enough good things about this game. The demo was so good I paid for early access years ago and patiently waited for version 1.0. It is an action RPG that takes place inside an MMO world. It features beautifully rendered pixel art in a style similar to A Link to the Past, or Secret of Mana. There is so much to do in this game, and it kept me invested for about 60 hours. For sake of discussing it, I would split the game up into two parts, the combat and the puzzles. The lengthy dungeons serve as a test of your skills in both of these parts. Each on its own is fantastic, but I think the combination makes it truly special.

The combat is fast paced, and uses an elemental type system. You start off with the standard grid, and over the course of the game you unlock the four elements: heat, electric, wave, and ice, for a total of five different combat modes. There is an unlock system which lets you use more abilities across the different elements as you level up. Once you get to the final tier of abilities, you really feel like you have gained a lot of strength.

There are two types of puzzles in this game, room puzzles (primarily in dungeons), and environmental puzzles usually found in the overworld. Every single map tile in the overworld has this fantastic sense of depth, which the designers have used in order to create these multi-layered environmental puzzles. It is some of the best level design I have ever seen, and I have never seen anything quite like it. Exploring the overworld was probably my favorite part of this game. However, I do not want to discount the room puzzles. CrossCode takes full advantage of its 4 elements system to create many different puzzle solving mechanics. For example, you can use wave to teleport across a room, or ice to create a stepping stone on lava. Most puzzles felt unique both in relation to other games, but also in relation to the other puzzles inside the game. They created hundreds of room puzzles without making them seem redundant, which is hard to do. More importantly, while many provided a challenge, none were annoyingly difficult.

I would rate this game a 9/10, and am only typing all of this in the hopes that one person sees this and checks it out. Well worth the $20 price of admission. PC/Steam

Soul Tyrant and the 5 reanimated knights that guard the dreamer in the City of Tears were the fights I remember the most as being frustratingly hard. And the white palace was I fucking nightmare. Like each new section was “you’ve gotta be kidding me”

And once I had the voidheart, I tried fighting the Radiance once- then just watched the YouTube video of that fight and ending.

The soul tyrant was definitely one of the harder bosses when I had fought him fewer times. I've steel soul'd past him enough now that I can usually take him down hitless because he's actually fairly slow and predictable compared to several bosses.

The watcher knights ended my last steel soul run. You can use the environment to tip the scales in your favor and after that it's a DPS race that reminds me a lot of the the Four Kings from Dark Souls Remastered. Losing that race 6 hours in hurts. It hurts real bad.

The White Palace contains a sub area called the Path of Pain. Check it out. It's absolutely awful. One of those things I will probably never do.

Since the Lifeblood patch I have MUCH more difficulty with the Traitor Lord, who I walked over pre-patch. Radiance is also waay harder now than she used to be. Have you fought Nightmare King Grim? It's a great fight. It's close to impossible, but after a few deaths you realize it's also extremely fair.

I'm probably never going to clear god master, but maybe I'll pick it back up again this weekend!

I totally skipped Grimm, and I doubt I’ll try the path of pain. I’m not in it for the sadistic challenge. I buy video games to be entertained, not frustrated. Lol. It’s a delicate balance between story/fun & difficulty and hollow knight nearly tipped that balance. If Hollow Knight hadn’t been so well done, I would’ve ditched it before you get the monarch wings. And even then, those bosses I mentioned and the white palace tested my patience. But by that point I was too far into it not to try to get the voidheart and 2400 essence. I unlocked Godmaster mode, tried it once and was like “yeah... nope”. And to be fair, challenge aside, I was kinda confused exactly what you’re supposed to do in Godmaster mode- there’s pantheons and sealed doors but I’m Unclear just what I’m Supposed to do.

You're absolutely right on that balance and I think team Cherry nailed it. Godmaster is mostly for diehards. It's supposed to be a bunch of boss rushes where you unlock more boss rushes by completing boss rushes. If you clear all of them, several with severe handicaps, you get a reward. It gives you something to do if you've done everything and still want more.

So I’m still catching up on PS4 classics. I breezed through Wolfenstein new order and old blood...

Now I’m playing Witcher 3 the complete version... my god. I understand why it’s so well received, but There’s too much freedom and choice. I’ve been playing off and on for 2-3 weeks and I’m so far branched off on side quests I have trouble recalling what I was supposed to be doing to actually advance the main story. And I’ve found that if I play in the evening after work, or for more than an hour at a time it frustrates me and puts me in a shitty mood. I now only play it on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Lol.
