I get the sentiment, but think about original neo-kaiju brands who made their name working with westerners. Secret Base and Pushead, BxH and Kosik and Kaws, Gargamel and Bwana, Martin And Biskup. This is like saying an artist like Knuckle shouldn’t be making fink stuff or being into hot rod culture because he’s not American. Or RxH Mori Shouldn’t be making TMNT toys because that is such a nostalgic American property.
When I was at 5 Point I had Punk Drunker and milkboy come over and offer to help agent for me at a factory no westerners use. If it doesn’t bother these guys maybe reconsider what about it bothers you. This is becoming a global thing with collaboration happening all over the world. People in Japan embrace western influence and artists and we embrace them. It’s all love and cultures working together to keep pushing into new territories.

For me the divide is designer toys vs non-designer toys. Once the designer became more important than the brand/company they became designer toys. Nothing wrong with that, just generally not my bag.

I like Secret Base, M1, Skull Toys, Bemon, Marusan, Exohead, etc. They were all started as toy companies - brands. It seems like only after US customers became interested in collecting did the individuals behind the companies become a primary focus - Hiddy, Mori, Honda, etc became synonymous with their brands. But at least with these examples the brands persist. Most everything that came afterwards (particularly from the US, but also Japan) were designer toys - even if the designer made toys under a brand name rather than their own name, the toy was always about the designer.

I do collect some designer toys, but I think of them completely differently than I do my sofubi collection.

That was my point... And I wouldn't be surprise to see S7 and KR crossover down the line.
Marvel and DC did it a couple of times.

Well, if Punk Drunker and milkboy think it's ok, who are we to say no?

    Wait, who is milkboy?

At this point, I think we have to come to terms with the fact that soft vinyl has been reduced to a production material/method.

I tend to prefer one of those Star Trek / X-men crossovers

Every geeky thing that i am utterly passionate about has numerous sub-genres that i can't stand or don't want to understand. That being said I am a HUGE fan and supporter of Bwana & Jon Rampage and I hope they get a fat check outta this deal. Funny, I might actually have a toilet rabbit in the house after all these years.... on my daughters shelf of course -ha

I hear you, but I still think of Sofubi as Kaiju monsters from the 'Monster Boom' of the late 60's. All of which directly originated from current TV/Film of its day, solely made by the Japanese. I just don't think of the makers you mentioned as Sofubi in the same way, even though they are.

I remember when I joined this board, I called RxH 'Kaiju' and a lot of members at the time chided me, saying that modern 'original' toys were not Kaiju and I shouldn't call them that. 10 years later everyone calls anything even remotely monster related 'Kaiju'.

I suppose meanings of names can change, I think I just see the name 'Sofubi' as a certain type of toy more than a type of material the toys are made of. Again, probably wrong of me!

I'm with akm6n, "sofubi" is just a material, and they were making baby dolls out of it before someone used those factories to make monsters. Now that there are outfits in China making toys that feel just like authentic Japanese sofubi toys, we can just say, "Japanese sofubi," or "Chinese sofubi."

In couple of years there will be sofubi factories in Vietnam and Thailand. Toy manufacturing has been migrating in that direction for over ten years.

Kaiju are giant monsters. Baby dolls aren't kaiju. Zombie baby dolls aren't kaiju. Robots (super and mecha) aren't kaiju. Wrestlers aren't kaiju. Kaiju don't wear pants.

I'm surprised people really still care, this didn't really affect the hardcore kaiju sofubi collectors 10 years ago and its not going to now.

There will be toys that are made for me until I die, They might be new and cheap or old and hard to find but there will always be something.

^ Oh most definitely, as the large majority of the '66 series would be classified by. You are absolutely right, Andy. I was just trying to be funny how people with all these rigid and 'clear' definitions of things [in general] might find out that really it's easier (and makes life happier) to just let things be a bit more open sometimes.

Fair enough, but I think for me, its to do with the fact that when I started collecting, it was always referred to as 'Kaiju Sofubi'. Always with the Kaiju in front, so I closely associate those two words. Kaiju to me are a particular type of toy, made in Japan by Japanese people. Same for all the TV character figures. Its a specific part of Japanese culture.

So the word 'Sofubi' to me, is associated with much more than just a particular type of plastic.

Pretty much Steve. Ever hear the one about the seijin, kaijin, and kaiju who walked into the Tsubaraya Bar?

They went toei to toei with the locals. Very messy.

Same. Just as Anime and Manga are. And there’s only 1 kaiju Frankenstein. I prefer to call soft vinyl outside Japan “soft vinyl” or “sofvi” for short. When I hear “sofubi” it tells me where it’s from.

That’s gonna be interesting. I wonder if they altered the platform with allowing Martin to add on top of the figure’s silhouette?

This hobby becomes a lot more fun when you stop trying to hoard lines like Gollum. I wish people would realize their greed is more harmful to the hobby than anything else.
