Just rewatched series 1 recently. I wonder if it is the original writer. Part of the greatness was the monologues.

Yeah, its the original writer/creator. Most of the main cast is back, except Cy Tolliver because the actor that played him died in 2017. I rewatched the three seasons recently and it was just as good as i remembered.

That's awesome. I was enjoying his jesus surfer show after deadwood even though it bombed. Do you know if he wrote anything else since deadwood?

I binge watched all three seasons in 2010 or 2011 while I was sick. Still own the entire series...some of the best television ever made.

Timothy Olyphant wasn’t that great in the series beyond being a very physical character; his acting has improved substantially in the interim. Ian McShane, on the other hand, was fucking epic!

I cursed like a sailor for weeks after watching the entire series. Does it still hold the record for most f-bombs in a single episode?

Edit: Wolf of Wall Street has it beat on the f-bomb count.

Really hope they give the McCall/Wolcott actor a 3rd role in this.

Oh i don't know i thought he was pretty good. It was a difficult role to play, on one hand he's gotta a be a total bad ass and on the other he has all those awkward scenes with his wife (his brother's widow) and her son, trying to be a gentleman. Kind of a dual role.

Man, that would be great. I remember i was very impressed when i realised it was the same actor playing two very different characters in the same show. Had that ever been done before?

    Don't forget the Dirt Worshippers!

I've been rewatching Black Sails as well. Not as good as Deadwood writing and acting wise but I see it as the pirate version of Deadwood. Bringing some history and famous characters to life. A group of capitalists trying to create their own society and get rich outside the confines of an established government. Smart people trying to outwit and out bully each other. The series gets better as it goes along.

Yeah, I enjoyed Black Sails and like you say, it definitely improved after the first season. Another show that reminded me of Deadwood was 'Hell on Wheels', which seemed to fly under the radar here in the UK. My brother and I enjoyed every season but there weren't many people talking about it when they aired. There are some memorable characters in Hell on Wheels and it was an interesting take on the Western genre.

Yes, definitely made me weepy. I could have done without the flashback footage and I would have preferred this story to be told over three two-hour movies, but it was very good.

While watching the marathon over the weekend I realized Deadwood did it twice. The guy who sells Alma's original husband his claim is also Schaunesy or whatever who owns the rooms for rent that Jonie rents/have the secret passageway to Sal's house. He's also the Astapoori who "sells" Dany her Unsullied in GOT.

When Bullock stops the mob from killing Hirst, he's a grizzly prospector who yells "I hope you die in the street like my daddy did."

I liked it, but it didn't end in a satisfactory way. I thought the characters were mostly very true to themselves which l was loving, but the plot was a bit lacking IMO. Still, it had plenty going for it and its better than no attempt at wrapping it up at all. Interesting to see who aged the best, the women faired better than the men! Seeing Swedgen like that was hard to take.

The main thing I didn't agree with was why would Charlie say no to Hearst and then be so unconcerned? Everyone who gets in Hearst's way gets murdered. Including Ellsworth. Wouldn't you have thought he'd be instantly guarded and would know he's a marked man? He'd know Hearst would be hiring assassins immediately. Or at least Bullock would have kept a close eye on him after advising him to turn Hearst down.

Also Hearst had been arrested by Bullock in the past and walked away free which I assume would also happen this time too. The only witness was the nigger general and no jury at that time would convict someone like Hearst based on a black man's testimony so the whole thing is left hanging similarly to the end of season 3.

Anyway, saying all that I did enjoy the fuck out of it and overall I thought they did very well after a 13 year break or whatever it was. Long time to come back from and do a good job, which apart from a few gripes, I think it was.
