    WOW. What an epic battle.

We have 3 more episodes and with the vanquishing of the Night King and his Army of the undead, shit is about to get real interesting.

Epic battle, but it was very dark and probably too much plot armor.
As many people have been pointing out online, we saw the main characters get rushed in the front of the charge, and then we saw them several cuts later miraculously fine. Other than a few small deaths, we emerged surprisingly unscathed. Even both dragons are okay!
I look forward to seeing how the end-game plays out.

Are we sure both dragons are ok? Appeared that we never saw the 2nd dragon after his one on one with the night kings dragon. Was also surprised that they kept so many main characters a live through such a horrific battle, but whatever, on to Cersei.

I thought only one dragon survived as well. Yup way too dark. How on earth does a left handed Jamie survive all of that?
I really didn't like how the giant was killed by lil moremont. It felt just too fake. It's not like I need all the characters I've grown to love get killed, but when there is an army of the dead and someone like Davos is still alive when he can barely use a sword with his numby fingers. I enjoyed it but there were lots of weird moments. The last couple seasons of GoT have not been up to par. I thought going past what was written by GRRM would have been a blessing but now it feels more like regular tv. Trying to come to a happy ending.
There's no ending going to be as satisfying as Endgame.

Oh I don't know, the chaotic-murky-dark-swirly-ice-dragony vibe grew on me. I did feel I was seeing something on TV I hadn't seen before, fair play to them for the effort.

I'm so glad Arya was the one to pig stick that fucker !!

I never liked show Lyanna. Her only good part was her FU raven to Stannis, and that was directly from ASOIAF. The fact that she survived a full on clubbing from a giant is ridiculous. Her bones would have liquified. It is funny though that wight giant knew to use a weapon, but living Wun Wun didn't.

I texted my brother earlier to ask him if he'd watched the battle, his response made me laugh:

You mean did I see the Battle of the Squinting at a Black TV Screen trying to discern what the fuck is happening? Yeah I saw it. Tbh I preferred the Battle of the Bastards. Also wondering what the fuck Bran is for? All that power and he sits there monosylabic waiting to be killed. Did Hodor die for that FFS

I sort of had the same reaction as Nate. While not being super critical of the various aspects of the episode (I mean, the lighting was a bit annoying as I predicted, but I can appreciate they are going for 'battle realism' I suppose), I was left fairly non-plussed by the end of it. Arya's NK slaying was completely telegraphed for some time, so that ending was sort of just as expected, if maybe sooner than I predicted. The one question which is probably on a lot of people's minds is, where do we go from here? I mean, Cersei has barely featured of late, certainly not to set her up as the 'big bad' of the finale. And the other main side of the coin I see here is that - whereas the books were so much more about the 'game of thrones'/political intrigue/all the character dynamics, and very much a story of human struggle, the show, on the other hand - in spite of its name - has outlayed the biggest battle of the GoT world as being light/living versus dark/[un]dead. I mean, this was foreshadowed by the very first opening scene of the entire show. The whole ASOIAF was turned into this epic struggle where the meagre spats of [wo]men were paltry compared to this greater threat facing all of life. To have that threat suddenly immediately neutralised, after building it up and up (and up) for seasons of television.... well I can see how the remaining few episodes to come could seem like a denouement, with potentially a less-satisfying ending. Let's see where this goes I guess. One thing I will say, is this is, so far, very much playing up on the standard tropes; which I guess the television adaptation has always been comfortable with or even embraced. With the loss now of the Children of the Forest, and the WW and any wights, I guess this is transitioning to the more standard era of humankind (just not sure I like that).

    Minor musings:
    - while I appreciate where it actually went, the final execution of Arya's journey felt a little too on the nose; more so than taking the NK off the board, this is what bothered me about the whole thing
    - some heavy plot armour in this episode
    - the character deaths didn't feel all that earned, considering the simplicity with the way others lived; I don't know why exactly the writers went this route, but I am guessing it is [hopefully] to play out more in what is to come
    - so, SO much poor tactical planning. Honestly, I don't know where to begin; once again we can summarise that Jon might be epically heroic and brave (I guess?) but is a terrible military leader
    - I am still not really clear what blue flame actually is supposed to be, but whatever, let's not think about it (I think that applies to a lot of this past episode)
    - Ghost? oh wait, nevermind, he is gone again. We've spent all our budget on cloud generation
    - I was really hoping they wouldn't do the crypts, in spite of my belief they would; it came off ever cheaper and less impactful though, they should have definitely left this out
    - so what's up with Bran, is his story essentially over now? Hodor died for this??!!
    - think I missed something with Sam's battle revelations, I guess another of those dangling threads put off until the next few episodes
    - did I mention how I felt the whole thing with everyone fulfilling their destinies, delivering on telegraphed plot points, felt more like a checklist of 'here's what to remember from previous seasons' versus actually satisfying results to developed storylines?
    - yes, this was an enjoyable x mins of entertainment, and deserves full laurels for taking the television medium to the next level, but ultimately I think some of the let down feeling comes from the descending into very familiar TV territory, playing to LCD audiences' expectations, along with every other show. It's fine, and even good TV, just not at the level at which we started this journey with GoT

Really, being released the same week as Endgame probably had some effect here, so that is maybe unfortunate timing.

Three 90-minute episodes of sweeping up the Night King splinters and disintegrated dead! Ever had a broken windshield? . . . that shit goes EVERYWHERE!

Aside: For safety glass, this is exactly what is supposed to happen in fact (albeit never for a windshield that I am aware). I was on a bus recently where an accident resulted in an elderly woman being thrown partway through the glass (door panel) and - while incredibly messy - I think it is safe to say all parties were very grateful for this effect.

The point is well taken. Winterfell is pretty much in ruins at this point (or ought to be, if there was any consistency at all with the way dragon fire is portrayed. Spoiler: there is not); with few people (just main characters seemingly) left to repopulate it. I wonder if the return of wight's to their pre-reanimated state means they go back to normal decomposition. That has got to be a smell. Especially with that dragon.

So, yeah, not sure what to make of these after-school-special plot devices:
All is lost! No wait! Here comes ninja assassin girl flown in just in time to bring down frosty dude that spear minted a dragon..

Still, ripping good yarn, even though we need to see them dragons get busy and produce more draggos, as I am pretty sure Cersei's Evil Meister have been busy to up his air defence game..

Also, just what exactly did King Spikey want from Bran? Coulda killed him twice already, no?

This show has been a bit of a dredge to watch for a bit now. I do have to admit, most fantasy novels get this stupidly derivative and obvious when it comes down to the last book(s), so to that end I’m glad they’re sticking to genre conventions. Long are gone the intrigue and political fantasy drama storylines that made this exciting in the first place.

The wheel of time felt the same way when it got written into an end as well, at least to me

I am not going to bother with the spoiler tag, because..... why are you reading this??

    ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬` Fine, spoiliest spoils ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬

Okay, the writers clearly have no idea what to do without plotting direction, or plain just don't GAF. This is all speeding down to wrap up loose ends and gloss over anything that might actually be developed into, you know, a storyline? Which, as far I can gather, is sort of what made GoT such a success. Speaking of glossing over, I appreciate how no one is really talking about how Arya slew the big bad, and in a few(?) hours they managed to destroy an entire army of the undead, which was built up over years as this big incredible army, and had hitherto been portrayed as nigh invulnerable. Oh no worries, those guys, yeah, they're dead; moving on. Speaking of unbeatable forces forecast as the game-changing element [of the show], how about them there dragons? Oh, don't never mind that, weren't you paying attention? We have this amazing new technology no one has ever thought of before, called crossbows*. (except they have, because we've even seen on in this very episode, just in case you needed reminding). Said weapons are basically blessed with magic to take down dragons like shooting fish in a barrel. Oh, and don't worry about simple practical concerns like aiming, balancing arcs - i.e. the real trajectory of an arrow, or reloading time, nah, that's nitpicking. Dragons, boom, taken off the field, cause we have these here magical fandangled weapons see? Oh and it is totally easy to nail a moving target in the sky multiple times.

Related, on to the subject once again of battle strategies. How is it our 'heroes' are constantly inept bewbs who have survived thus far? How is it that Euron and co./the Iron Fleet managed to sneak up on them again? And please to explain how Dany, being in the air and all - never mind having an advance scouting party - did not somehow see them. At all. And, if we really want to get picky, ummm, how about swinging round, and attacking them from behind? Maybe just burning the entire fleet to ash? Again, probably not thinking too much about the technical layout or maneuverability of boats. And how about that Missandei? I don't mean what happened to her, I'll leave that for now, but how is Euron knew (or even cared) about a single lowly person in all that destruction? Why would they care to take her back to KL? Just doesn't get them anywhere at all. [Except of course to set up the inevitable scene at the end, which serves no purpose in itself] Of course the destruction of all the ships is, once again, owing to these miracle weapons. If they were so all-powerful to also be used for warfare, why was no one using them all along? And then why, at the end of the same episode, are they not even used?

Look, I am purposefully being overly critical with these small details. I know this is a show, and I do not at all expect it to live up to any realistic expectations. This is fantasy; it's all there in the name. But I am trying to highlight how lazy this story has become. While the episode in itself wasn't terrible, characters are doing things which make little sense, and are at the very least fully inconsistent with the portrayals we have seen with seven seasons(!) of a show establishing this world. It doesn't even matter any more that I think neither Jon nor Dany are going to be the right person to sit the Iron Throne or who I think will eventually take down Cersei. Because B&B are making me not care about any of it. And that is the real shame here. As it gets boiled down to a level of mediocrity, this seems like one show who's exit season will be one of, if not, the weakest ones. Which if you think about most shows that have had this sort of development and fandom, is usually the opposite.

I probably have plenty more to say about the episode particulars, but it is mostly indifference. Also, Cersei would have totally killed Tyrion (had that scene played out normally). That is just a given.

    PS - sorry, Tormund. :(

    * yes, yes, I know, it is technically a ballista, but come on, we're not talking about the evolution from automobile to space shuttle here.
