I actually really like this toy. Like most toys in this forum, It is suffering from a bit too much going on. I'd like it even more without the gun in its mouth and the cannon undies..
By Chairman 666, I've never seen a chance to buy this crazy guy.

I’m not sure what’s worse the sculpt or the paint job.

Chairman 666 has done some good stuff- I love those leather-jacketed tiger and fly-head dudes- and he seems to have a strongly absurdist sensibility. I kinda wonder if this is his taking-the-piss response to the flood of toys like this. Such ludicrous overkill.

Seems like a long way to go and a lot of money spent for it to be a statement. It’s terrible, and like a lot of artists, someone should have told them so before it reached this point. But this hobby is full of sycophants blowing smoke up artists asses.

Yeah really! At that level of sculptural detail I'd expect to see some anal bifurcation too.

But not you, Paul. Your stuff is tops! ;) You’ve got multiple decades of conceptual continuity, you clearly know your vision and your craft. If Kaiju artists were movie stars, you’d be Anthony Hopkins.

To be clear, I feel that there is a lot of folks making toys that probably shouldn’t be made; and someone should tell them so- a friend, spouse, someone before they sink the time and money into the endeavor. That’s how you end up with stuff like that giant 6-armed, three eye socket, cannon speedo, castle headed Thing with a mace AND a flail. It’s too much, too busy and it’s just lousy design. It’s fugly.

I hear you, Phil; and yet, I somehow wouldn't put it past the guy to do this as a weird jokey fuck you to the market for such abominations... especially because he's already demonstrated, multiple times, that he can make actually tasty stuff, with much more artistic restraint than this. I mean LOOK at that fucking thing... it really is like he made a hilarious checklist and went down it, to make the ultimate overdone shitty vinyl monstrosity.

Or it's sincere and then yes, then somebody in his orbit should have stopped him. :D

@hellopike My thoughts exactly. There seems to be way too much yes manning that comes from people who don’t even support the artist they’re gassin’ up once the toy comes out. I’ve also noticed an influx of “If I did _______ would you be interested/buy it?” At that point you’re not even creating for you, you’re making whatever audience you’re pandering to “wants.” Take the creative risk, and if it bombs, it’s hard lesson. Some peeps really could benefit from some honest critiques, harsh or not, so long as it’s honest!

I think there's not a lot of people conceptualizing what their toy would be like if it was alive. The best toys have a personality, and you can't create a personality by just throwing a bunch of personality traits together with no rhyme or reason.

This toy is a great example. In my head, I see a potential boss in Dark Souls if you toned it down. But there is SO MUCH unnecessary stuff.

Why does his chained boulder have a skull on it? What value does that have? Does he come from a universe where rocks have skulls?

If he has a giant cannon where his mouth is, why does he need teeth? Teeth are used to pulverise things, but with a giant goddamn cannon with his mouth he can't even close it.

Overthought toys like this look like the end result of a bunch of toy collecting stoners going "you know what would be cool" over and over and over again

What is with that cannon belt? This is the second figure that has this. Is it a reference to something other than the HxS sculpts?

I am sure this is minority opinion, but honestly, I think @ungawa222 might have nailed it. As 'extreme' as this venture would seem to be, just to be a piss-take on the hobby, the fact that it has reached this level where such - and let's be clear here, there is no question the toy is an abomination of design - sculpts cannot even be differentiated as a joke or not; it sort of proves his point. This could be just another extreme toy, but I don't think so. If you look at that toy, I am sure you can probably list an easy dozen others which it might be referencing without even really trying. It just has everything: skulls, craters, veins, multi-arms, multi-heads, ball 'n chain, cannons, micro pilot, etc., topped off with the unbelievably garish paintjob. I know this hobby has gone to some odd choice places, and I fully own this criticism if this is meant to be a genuine, honest artistic entry into the medium, but the outrageousness of it is just too on point. Heck, I would not be in the least surprised if someone like Luke had a hand in brainstorming up something like this.

It could be I am giving the artist too much credit, but if you actually look at the execution and detail, and think about his other work, I very much at least would consider the possibility that this is a meta commentary on the vinyl 'scene.' And, let's also equally acknowledge here that, just like art which is in itself social critique on the art world, and so often flies over the heads of the 'experts' and high snobbery of that field, this is going to end up being bought and 'appreciated', if not perhaps for the reasons intended. In that way, it is not much of a gamble for Chairman 666 to produce these in a small run. People will be on IG (and I am sure they are already but just frankly don't care to check) for this beast. If this is a joke I am laughing, and if it is not, I am still laughing. I think the end effect is the same. :)

    It's got everything and it's got nothing. What a great summary of neo-sohfubees in 2019. <ultimate eyeroll>
