Sherlock Holmes/ Occam's Razor says something like - 'balance probabilities and choose the most likely'. In this case my guess would be, the artist studied current trends and designed a toy appropriately. Kinda reverse-engineered a toy that will attract attention either good or bad. There's no such thing as bad publicity kinda thing.

I would have probably loved it when I was 14 , it looks like it should be on a Warhammer diorama
I am seeing a few toy designers whose influences are rooted in modern manga and anime and global 'fantasy' trends.

If it is a critique of the state of the sofubi hobby, or a joke played on his audience, then he spent thousands of dollars doing so- in which case the joke is on him.

Firstly, we have no idea what his resources and means are. Second, he would not be the first artist to spend big bucks on such a statement (witness Jeff Koons, who I would say is equally opaque in his intentions, and who has done many works where I personally would say the joke's on him, and who is fawned over by rich dolts worldwide.) Thirdly (and sadly, to you and me)- it'll sell just fine.

I got a chance to see one those at a Mandarake in Tokyo a little over a month ago, and in addition to the sculpt being way over the top, the toy itself is absolutely massive and would be such a colossal waste of space.

I wouldn’t buy it myself, but I actually kind of like it. Not too overly detailed and decently sculpted.

i have nothing against digital sculpting but this and all their other toys just scream digital. this at least doesnt have tiny faces everywhere or perfect skulls attached to things etc. ...loses a lot of charm this way imo

Yeah, that silly looking. I’d be more into it if it were a cheap $20 knock off I found at a toy shop and not a $150 new toy, but whatever. It’s not nearly as bad as some of the stuff on this thread by a long shot.

I actually dig it. It is fun, and very bootleg-y. At least this toy has character and was designed by hand. It's derpiness is so far ahead of the over-designed splatterfest that usually populated this thread. I'd probably do without the pilot, but he generally fits in with the aesthetic here (again, not something that you can typically say of toys here). The colours are also fun; I can see this fitting in with a lot of collections/tastes here, but I guess that's me. That being said though, 150$ is a steep ask out of the gate for me, no matter how much it is being pushed as the new norm, and making this a lottery release is the final checkmark I need to happily be aware of it, but have no desire to chase after. I think this guy should have gone with the GS model, would have probably had a fair amount of success.
