Arya Stark can't save that heaping pile I bet. I might wait to check out this next one on red box and save 30.00 on tix and food.

I stopped caring a long time ago. I haven't seen endgame or infinity wars, yet I know most of the spoilers from reviews. I'm sure they are good /great, I just don't have the energy to spend on that world of bland.

ComicCon got me curious again: that eternals thing sounds so lame that it has to be something to look forward to! Doctor strange in the multiverse of madness might also be a worthy roller-coaster experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed Infinity War and Endgame, but at the end of it I realized I watched 20 movies to get there, and I only really liked 5 or 6 of those.

Looking ahead, I only see one movie that looks appealing. I'm going to start treating these the way I used to when I was an active reader of the comics. For example, I didn't find Doctor Strange interesting, so I didn't buy his books.

I've enjoyed Marvel's projected TV show well-enough throughout, and will most likely continue to leave my house for every episode, but the list of said eps that I'm feeling like I'll feel compelled to visit again isn't that long. Let's see, from memory...
Captain America and The Avengers from Phase 1 stand out in my mind.
I'd go for Iron Man 3, Winter Soldier and the first Guardians again in a heartbeat, if'n we're talking P2. 'Prolly Ultron, too.
The only ep from P3 that I remember smiling ear-to-ear over was Ragnarok, but I certainly have room in my heart for Cap 3, Guardians 2 and The Avengers pair. Time will tell on the first Spidey, but I much enjoyed it while I was there.

Okay, memory tells me that I really dug over half of them, or would at least take them for a second spin. Not bad.
Which ones stood out to you, @Roger?

Fingers crossed that they manage to do justice to The Eternals.

Here they are in chronological order. All movies that I enjoyed the first time around and are very rewatchable for me.
    • Avengers 1
    • Captain America: The Winter Soiled Her
    • Captain America: Civil War (which was really more of an Avengers movie, and I loved that they finally got Spider-Man right)
    • Thor: Ragnarok (I skipped it in the theater because I didn't like the first two, a mistake I won't make with the fourth one)
    • Spider-Man: Homecoming
    • Avengers: Infinity War
    • Avengers: Endgame
So, looks like 7 movies I liked. The other ones fall into these categories for me.
    • Feels like a paint-by-numbers exercise (Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 1, 2, and 3, Captain America: First Avenger, Thor 1 and 2)
    • Not interested in the premise of the heroes (Doctor Strange, Ant-Man 1 and 2)
    • Interested in the premise of the heroes but I didn't like the storytelling style (Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2, Avengers 2)
    • Stories that presented too many inconsistencies or flaws that made it a frustrating watch (Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man: Far From Home)
Of course, all of this is just the result of my personal preferences. I know that can be a hyper-critical creature of habit, and sometimes this leads to a very narrow focus in the things I consume and enjoy, but I do my best to keep my mind open.

Related to that, regarding the Guardians movies, I have to say that I love the design of those films, especially the second one, feels very 1980s Heavy Metal Magazine. The movies are written well, they have solid themes, it's just that they're so heavily infused with James Gunn's humor and sentimentality (understandably) and that's just not my thing. Similar to the way that some people just don't like Joss Whedon's stuff, I just don't like the "flavor" that James Gunn has brought to the table.

My love of Marvel Comics characters started when I was very young and learning how to read, watching Spider-Man on The Electric Company and getting the occasional Spidey book from the local five and dime. Later on, the Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends show was one I never missed, and that introduced me to mutant characters and the X-Men.

Later on, a friend lent me a reprint of Giant Size X-Men #1 and that prompted me to start a folder at the local comic store, starting with Uncanny X-Men book around the #170 mark. This is when Rogue joined up after stealing Carol Danvers' powers, and Storm had a mohawk. X-Men was my thing because they were outcasts and losers, and that undoubtedly resonated with me. By contrast, the Avengers were winners, champions. When the MCU came around and they were built around these characters, I may have been a little predisposed to disliking movies about "the really good guys."

Watchmen was a pleasant surprise today - really enjoyed the first episode. Glad that it is its own thing but still had several callbacks to the comics.. the preview for upcoming episodes is packed full of good stuff.

Does it follow the comic ending (space squid) or movie ending (Dr. Manhattan)?

Space squid >> Dr. Manhattan. Just saying.

but we don't even need to get into that whole Snyder debate

There's a way the writers could accommodate both. Go with the movie ending where Dr. Manhattan is blamed, then afterwards Ozymandias sees value in casting doubt on the "official" story. Starts spreading the giant squid story through underground media outlets.

It would reference what some real-life UFO researchers say about the government seeding stories about aliens, plus it would parallel 9/11 truthers, who insist that what thousands of people saw and heard in Manhattan isn't what "actually" happened.

Does the Internet exist in the show?

I wasn't sure about it from the trailer a while back. I set my mind against it, but there's a lot of positive things being said, so I will check it out.

... I found this quote from the creator of the show amusing:

“I do feel like the spirit of Alan Moore is a punk rock spirit, a rebellious spirit, and that if you would tell Alan Moore, a teenage Moore in ’85 or ’86, You’re not allowed to do this because Superman’s creator or Swamp Thing’s creator doesn’t want you to do it, he would say, fuck you, I’m doing it anyway. So I’m channeling the spirit of Alan Moore to tell Alan Moore, fuck you, I’m doing it anyway."

Except Alan Moore was nothing but highly respectful of Superman, and found a way to add so many layers to Swamp Thing without disrespecting what happened before. Alan Moore didn't crap on past works, instead, he built upon them, respecting decades of stories and alchemizing them into even greater works.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, however, does see him doing whatever he wants with other people's characters...

Captivating first episode. I'll mirror what has already been said online but that interrogation scene was a real treat.

I agree with this in the first instance. LoEG is a weird one because it definitely bastardises many characters after what I found to be a relatively faithful first volume. Still very undecided on how I feel about it's conclusion.

Moore's sensitivities aside, I'm just wondering what the necessity of this show is? I get that racism is bad and it's great to depict it's horrors but following on from the conclusion of the graphic novel, wasn't earth united through a shared universal fear? The continued problem of racism feels like a theme relatively small to the grand conclusion of the original story. Can someone shout me a beer if this series ends with Dr.Manhattan turning everyone blue? Ha!

Well, i was assuming this new TV show is being respectful and not crapping on the original work, but i haven't watched the first episode yet so i wouldn't know.

My take: right now, when it comes to movies and TV, comic book movies are the chief money makers. There are producers, directors, and showrunners who want to get their stories told and are dressing them up like superheroes to get greenlighted. I can't find the quote right now, but Todd Phillips said he used the opportunity of making Joker to push a "regular movie" through.

In the case of Joker, it didn't work too well. The Joker in the movie doesn't really resemble the one who fights Batman, and the whole thing feels like "Baby's First Taxi Driver." In the case of Watchmen, I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds like Lindelof is continuing with some of the themes established in The Leftovers, and they happen to mesh effectively with Watchmen's source material.

Incidentally, my brief Joker review: https://letterboxd.com/rogzilla71/film/joker-2019/

How funny I too wrote a rushed letterboxd review (but I advocate for the film):
    https://boxd.it/PAVu9

Interesting you mention Phoenix coming across as a drag queen. His outburst on TV reminded me of Divine in Female Trouble. Anyway, comic book movies are definitely a weird one if the studios continue to create facsimilies of “regular movies” in order to combat disinterest via market saturation. Might be planned from a marketing standpoint but I’d still prefer these kind of narratives as opposed to a CGI shitfest.

Looks like we are getting Thelma and Louise in the form of the upcoming Harley Quinn movie. Or Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

Maybe eventually we'll get My Dinner with Ant-Man.

I would pay money for this. Paul Rudd is a treasure, and a very handsome man! I can imagine an entire movie of him and Michael Pena at a burrito place.
