Chocolate Chip Trip stands out cause it’s Danny Carey abusing the fuck out of his drum kit. 7empest is my favorite track off the album too. Imo those 15 fly by.
I just watched an ‘unboxing’ video of the album on youtube, which isn’t something I would normally do, but by george that is the greatest packaging I’ve ever seen
I saw that special edition packaging. It just seemed excessive. Like, how often does anyone plan you use the tiny screen and speaker built into the cd packaging? Once or twice out of novelty? It’s a glorified greeting card that plays a tool song when you open it. An app might've been a neat way to go though, certainly more cost effective. Maybe with a unique code printed in each cd package to unlock special art through the app... I dunno.
I think an app misses the entire point. These days everything is streaming/cloud-based - and it sucks. An app would be even less utilized than the (admittedly gimmicky) LCD screen. This is clearly meant to hearken back to when music was consumed as an album, rather than a song on a spotify playlist. While I don't own the CD, I'd be much more likely to admire the physical object a few times a year, whereas after one look digital artwork (or an app) I never revisit it. I buy records because if I'm going to pay money for something, I WANT something tangible, and I enjoy thumbing through the album covers from time to time.
When you put it like that, you are right, and generally speaking I feel the same way about purchasing something and wanting something tangible. I feel this way about digital movies and video games. I’d rather have the disc in case PlayStation network decides to go away or my old system bites the dust. With music, I think I’ve moved away from that kind of feeling though. I want the music, and the package in which it arrives is very, very secondary to me. And from what I understand tool offered a less expensive more traditional cd option right? So it’s cool that the offered the alternative. I just bought my copy via iTunes. For a thing (a music record) that will be used daily, and travel with me, I’m all for a digital copy over a physical copy. I hated carrying cds and cassettes. Especially in the car.
I hear ya. And to clarify my position, I want the physical media AND the digital DL. In this day and age I HATE it when I buy a record and it doesn't come with a damned DL code. I mean, WTF? The premium price you pay for a record these days, they can sure as shit provide you with a digi copy, because yeah, the amount of time spent listening to music in my living room is very small compared to the amount of time listening to music NOT in my living room. But I recognize I'm a minority in the music consumption arena. I'm still very much an "album" listener - if a musician can't make a strong album I don't care to listen to them. I don't mess with spotify. And only a few times a year when I just really can't be bothered to think of what to listen to do I ever put my music on shuffle.
