We are all adults here.. even during the times when we aren't acting like adults, do we really need to lock down threads?? Seems to be a bit of an over-protective/super-sensitive thing to do.. let people duke it out - and provide entertainment for the rest of us

"Several studies have produced evidence that self-esteem has a negative relationship with the frequency and intensity of schadenfreude experienced by an individual. This means that the less self-esteem an individual has, the more frequently and/or more intensely they will experience schadenfreude. The reverse also holds true - those with higher self-esteem experience schadenfreude less frequently and/or with less emotional intensity"

Meh. I take no pleasure in yesterday’s asshattery, but I do think locking a thread 4 hours after it died down and issuing a “general warning” is silly, especially when the issue only pertained to two people.

I think pm mediation and thread locking instead of temporary or permanent bans is also silly. We are adults, act accordingly.

So what is your point Glenn, we are adults but people are not acting like it? You may want to live in an anarchic society, but that is simply not the case. This board has rules, and by being a member here you agree to abide by them. If not, there is the door.

The bottom line is that taking part in this forum is a choice, plain and simple. We are supposed to be here to talk about vinyl toys. If you don't like the way the board is run, or don't wish to be part of that community, then that is your own deal; you are free to start up your own forum with no rules to talk about and do whatever you want. Run it how you want. But you cannot force this place to your own desires as an individual just because you want it that way. I am saying this as a general 'you' and not specifically to @badteethcomics. People seem to have a hell of a lot of entitlement when it comes to posting on this board. Free speech and criticism is one thing, we welcome it; if you have productive feedback, the mods have always shown themselves to listen - or Glenn wouldn't even be here right now. But this is not a grey area and what went on in the FU thread very clearly over the line.

I could not agree more Jeff, but sadly this place has been highly lacking in this behaviour.

This board has become rife with negativity and bile the past while. Perhaps it is our fault for letting it creep in too much, but I can say that for every person who complains about the mods taking 'overly-sensitive' action, there are those who are upset or just fed up with coming here and seeing this constant bickering and crap-spouting by board members. The mods are an easy scapegoat for everyone on both sides of the argument. I could just as easily advocate that instead of going more to the side of letting people say and do whatever they want, that we crack down more on the asshattery and BS that gets put out here. I am not, but the point is that there is a balance maintained.

TL,DR - Not everyone will like it, and that is fine. See the fine art of negotiation and compromise. If you find yourself in that group, you are welcome to take a break at any time. Mods are here to maintain the rules as laid out, and we will continue to do so.

Fair points @ultrakaiju - but we all need a place to rant. Some of us don't have family or many friends (or no friends like me boo hoo) so we gotta let off some steam somewhere.. even if its a little too spicy for some people to read. Better to keep the vileness in one spot rather than having bullshit cover the entire board right? Heck make a subforum called "Assholes Only" for all I care.

So with that I take on the suggestion above and dub thee The Fuck Ya Thread #3

If you guys had bothered to check, the original thread was already unlocked, this was a temporary measure as was stated, to calm heads.

Ranting is fine, attacking is not; as I said, there is a very clear distinction there from anyone why wants to take a minute to think, and use common sense, before posting their every thought.

As to the rest of your comment, Jeff...
...I can appreciate where you're coming from, and agree at least as far as the tools we orange coats have at our disposal leave a lot to be desired - the time we have available, too - but I have some thoughts I'd like to share about where we don't entirely dovetail on all of this.

When yesterday's flame was starting, I happened to be online and was able to intervene in real time; warnings, PMs and yes, lockdown over in another thread. When the flame traveled, hours later, over into FU Land, I was in the thick of it in the real world and not able to keep my eye on things. When Steve logged in and saw what had been happening, regardless if a few hours had passed since the last chum-in-the-water post from a bystanding boardie, I believe that he decided that, rather than wait for the next person to wake up, see the fuss and decide that they wanted to play too, happens all the time, he'd reach for the valve. Do I believe a lock to be a solution to a problem? Never has the practice fixed an issue in its entirely, but it can be a useful stopgap until whatever the matter may be can be looked into.

Again, not trying to speak for Steve, but I'd guess that his 'general warning' was going out to the schadenfreude set, too. His above message seems to suggest that.

As for PM moderation being silly, I do have to take some issue with that. I'd never claim that it works every time, but you might well be amazed at how often it's actually happened over the years, and how the results can be seen in a sort of inverse; what you don't end up reading here in the threads. Also, I'd almost always prefer to attempt to talk it out before swinging the hammer. The majority of the - thankfully few - bans that have been handed out over the years have been a last resort.

If we banned out of hand everyone that did or said something childish here, this place would be even more of a ghost town than it can sometimes seem. Part of acting the adult is talking it out and, bringing it back to the tools I mentioned at the top of this brick, I wish that we had a 'time-out' system implemented on the platform; where someone would be prohibited from posting for a day or three, but could still keep in contact with 'management' for the duration. As it stands, a ban is just that - a total two way stoppage, further communication only being possible through outside contact; the bannee's various addys and SM handles not necessarily being on record. Bringing someone 'back from the dead' is a process, and only one of us has access to the incantations.

Hope all that makes a bit of sense to you. To all of you, actually. Feedback would be appreciated, as I'd love it if this thread of Glenn's could be used as a lot more than a chum-lovers paradise, or just another space to clobber us volunteer firemen. These concerns affect us all, and have major bearing on the tone of this place, so an open dialog is essential.

I don't have a TL;DR but, if you did make it to the bottom of this one, thanks for reading.

EDIT: Forgot to fold in Jeff's post.
