Different animal, man, but feel free to skip out on transcendence through heart, pure form and madness. :D

Funny you should mention the low end of things, though, as I was just torturing Steve a week or two ago with a particularly troubling example of that plague:

    It's real!

    Almost forgot:
Yeah, the tuber trip issue is the reason that I'm most excited about (and most concerned about) the Absolute edition that's on its way... I demand samples of the recolo(u)red pages yesterday!

I have been lucky to borrow all aforementioned comics from my local library. Let me know how the Absolute edition goes so I’m prepped for purchase.

That crossover is insane. Would go nicely next to my Archie VS Predator but it’d taken a pretty brazen man to walk into a store and purchase that abomination.

On its way into the world, not my house - I'm waiting for confirmation of crime or proof of redemption, same as you, haha.

Remind me that I wanted to bring up Snagglepuss and his ilk. Time for nappies.

Real quick, though - an abomination of another stripe:

Will Neil Gaiman ever finish Miracleman? I feel like it's been 10 years of "coming soon"

In terms of other obscure, dark, occult story-tellers, I'd recommend the blandly-named John Smith from 2000AD. Seminal works are Revere, Firekind, and absolutely Indigo Prime. If you can find a used copy of the TPB, you can see incredible science-fiction with a twist of dark existential horror. Early art by Chris Weston is a plus!

Never knew that the series was in limbo. It always looked cool to me having both Moore and Gaiman contribute.

Sounds fucking awesome! Bonus points coz his work could be my gateway drug into the pages of 2000AD.

It was in limbo for over 20 years due to a pissing fight over rights. Todd McFarlane and Neil Gaiman had a very public feud over this for a long time. The history is just as interesting as the story itself, which IMO is one of the most important comics of the modern era (more than Watchmen I would say).

I really wish we could get an HBO mini series of the Moore run instead of yet another Watchmen adaptation

No 2000AD ever? Wow, I envy your coming descent into their extensive bibliography! My personal all time favorite is Nemesis, by Pat Mills and Kevin O'Neill, among other artists. It's the story of a chaotic alien versus the human order trying to conquer and kill the universe.

Other great books include Slaine (to a point) and Bad Company, a weird war comic where the real enemy is more nebulous than first thought.

Yep, Clowes never dissapoints me. I think one of my all time fav hardbacks is 'The Manly World of Lloyd Llewellyn.'

"Lloyd's adventures swing like a Tiki orgy hosted by little green hipsters from outer space. With un-trendy straight lines, zip-a-tone shades and sketchy backgrounds, Clowes LL art recalls 50's advertising illos, or architectural drafts seen through a mild hallucinogenic scrim." - Village Voice

Damn, Moog, you have no idea how jealous I am that you've got that Manly hardback! Seemed way too spendy to me back in '94 at, what, fifty bucks? and I've been chasing it ever since for over $200! I've had the mags and that one comic special since the '80s, and a bunch of appearances of his from random rags for almost as long, so I suppose I have no business complaining... But I want it aaaaaaal! Is that so wrong?

Too funny that ol' Lloyd came up here, as just a couple of days ago I came two pages closer to wholeness:

Anything Goes! #3, from March of '85. It's finds like these that make you forget about the 17 cumulative hours you spent flipping through a sea of '90s crossover fodder from the Big 2 (and an ocean of early Image off-perspective Beefcake Pr0n) to get to them.

    I heart quarter bins.

Nope, i also have the 13 story paperback Llewellyn collection as well. I regret not picking up the hardback Eightball collection, even though i have pretty much all of it collected in the pages of books like Lout Rampage and Orgy Bound.

They are all so nicely printed and designed, its hard to resist. I found the hardback for David Boring in a charity shop maybe a year ago, just sitting there all lovely in its pristine slip-cover for a quid. I couldn't believe my luck, its the last charity shop i would expect to find a book that cool in too. Shear dumb luck.

Ah! I don’t know what you guys are speaking about. I’ll have to investigate. My personal favorite of Mr Clowes is Like a velvet glove cast in iron. I remember the first time I read I got scared. First comic that did that for me.

Wondering if any of you guys have read Space Riders? What do you think?

My favourite Clowes is a toss up between Ghost World and David Boring. Mind you, The Deathray had an incredible ending.

EDIT: Ooops, two more folk chimed in while I was typing! This brick was prompted by Joe.

^ Yeah, I had a nice run of finding Clowes hardcovers on the cheap a while back. At this point the only ones I'm missing, I think, are the two limited edition ones they did early on: your complete Llewellyn jobbie and a most handsome edition of Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron. It's always surprised me that they never produced that last one for wide release. Oh, I also skipped the recent "complete" Eightball, I've got the floppies, but now I'm itching for that, too. I need help! And money. Or money? Fleg.

The cool slash maddening thing about all of those softcover collections, Lout Rampage!, Orgy Bound, etc, is that they each have a few strips that he did for publications outside of Eightball. The related frustration is that I wish Fantagraphics has done for Clowes what D&Q did for Julie Doucet - her Complete Dirty Plotte also collects everything else she published in the same period, has an superb little repro of one of her original minis, and around a hundred pages of essays, interviews, photos and scraps to round it all out. Awesome stuff, and quite redemptive of the word complete. I'd have been camped out outside of the shops for a Complete Short Works of Daniel Clowes, ha!

You guys know about this, yes?

Skip to 1m49s if you're feeling impatient, and stick around til the end.

As long as I'm still babbling, what I really want, and what I definitely can't afford right now, is this:
Almost two feet tall and with a wingspan of two and a half! Good news, it's been delayed until February, bad news, the price went up.

Wasn't I supposed to talk about Snagglepuss? Maybe tomorrow. Have an unrelated panel:

PS: Read Patience! That shit should be taught in schools.

    EDIT II:
    Don't get me started!

Take a look here and then skim the next few pages. We talk about it a good bit.

    They're wrong. ;)

SUB-EDIT: It's actually just a brief exchange on page 41. Sorry! I must have been remembering all the chats I've had about it elsewhere.

Space Riders: cool and stupid. If you like the art, have fun! The story is fairly pointless and relies on cursing far more than I'd like, but the art is fun death metal punk vibes.

Funny thing about Tura Satana is that she rejected Elvis’ hand in marriage. Also, John Waters met her once and said she was lovely which caused him some dissatisfaction because he was expecting her to be more like Russ Meyer’s character.

As for the quote,”A velvet glove cast in iron” I have pondered upon what that actually means for a long time. Is there significance or is it just hyperbole? A metaphor for being tsundere?

Can’t say I loved Patience. Might merit a reread but I don’t remember it being top tier Clowes.

Speaking of which, the special edition hardback of GW is another cherished item. Its so well produced, the printing and paper is top quality. Handling books like that is a joy, everything feels right. The printing in the SE version is more vibrantly 'minty' compared to the Tpb. It really pops off the matt paper!

    @toothaction
That huge Original Art book does look amazing, I certainly know the appeal of massive collections like those, that can crush a coffee table they're so heavy! I think the biggest one I have is Little Nemo in Slumberland 'So many splendid Sundays' by Sunday Press. Its about 17" x 21" and is probably the most extravagant book I own. The pages are the same size as the newspaper it was printed in, back in 1906.

Haha, I thought it was one of the best things he's ever done. I didn't read anything about it before I bought it, so I read it cold and was pleasantly surprised he's trying new stuff. It did seem subtly different to what I'm used to from him, but in a good way.

So Vertigo's on it's way out... it will be folded by next Jan/Feb I believe? I wonder if this means I have to snatch my favourite titles up beforehand or if they will continue printing them yet publish nothing new OR rebrand them as DC Black Label. DC has made some really shitty fucking decisions lately i.e. another reboot and stripping the amount of series to 52, one dude having editorial insight over everything... This is pain equivalent to thar of Marvel's One More Day except x 1,000, 000.

Got my new hardcover edition of Junko Mizuno's Pure Trance comic book today. Although I already have the OOP softcover signed, I could not miss an opportunity to support one of my favorite artists with what I consider to be her best long-form work. Druggy, kawaii sci-fi full of death and destruction. Cute yet nihilistic, like me :)

And for no reason, here's my collection of Jodorowsky Humanoid Hardcovers. A Chilean like me, the majority of his work has been criminally unpublished in the USA for decades, and is only now coming to light here thanks to a set of gorgeous books with sewn binding and high quality paper. Some of it is leaps and bounds better than others, but they are all maddeningly wild and creative books.

And for those of you that think Warren Ellis is the master of science-fiction in comics, please read The Adventures of Luther Arkwright. While the sequel is a great book, the first book (in stunning black and white) is a stunning explosion of comics techniques and ideas that have been picked over by more celebrated authors decades later. It may have lost some impact now, because all that was once new and shocking becomes replicated to the point of becoming the very language of comics itself, but the story is still mesmerizing. Although I'll admit, it takes a good 40-60 pages for me to even understand what is going on at first. There are so many things going on at once, it is hard to even see the bigger picture. No hand-holding on this one, folks.
