Dolemite Is My Name. To me, a perfect Netflix movie (which means it's like an A- made-for-TV-movie) about a subject that's dear to me. Enjoyed from start to finish. Eddie Murphy is fucking terrific in it.

Yeah mate, i also really liked Wesley Snipes in it as well. He was making me laugh quite a bit. I haven't seen him in anything for years and then when i do its a comedic role and he's killing it, which was slightly surreal. It was an interesting little biopic, tons of filthy language and a fair bit of nudity but also quite light-hearted and feel good at the same time. Like you say, Murphy was really good. Just as good as he's ever been, if you're a fan of his.

Thanks for the heads up, i didn't even know it was back on. I really liked the first two seasons. I keep telling my brother how good it is but he hasn't given it a go yet. I think he's one of those people that doesn't like recommendations, he's gotta find it for himself.

Oh, agreed- I love Wesley Snipes and am always psyched to see him. He certainly camped it up a bit here, and wow, this movie does not paint D'Urville Martin in a good light! I am not familiar with the details of Martin's life, but I don't doubt the veracity of how he's portrayed here, especially given some of the roles he took toward the end of his career/life. (One of those appearances is in my all-time favorite bad movie, the Filipino heist flick Blind Rage, which... to put it very mildly... is not a high-value production.)

Murphy's performance was so endearing, so great in every way, that I'm already thinking about re-watching the movie... something I rarely ever do.

I told myself I was gonna rewatch all the Saban Toku stuff from 93 - 98, but it’s going slow. I let video games distract me, so I haven’t even made it through season 1 of MMPR (the first show on the list). I want to go forward and watch all the Americanized shows, but I have to meet that first goal before I can consider catching up all the way. Ninety-eight is a significant year for me, because that’s when all these shows moved off network and onto cable, and we couldn’t afford cable at the time. That was Crushing as a kid - being cut out of Power Rangers & Mystic Knights at the same time.

^ How about switching to TV toku made from '66-71 instead? Borrow someone else's childhood!

Thinkin' about it. Ultraman & Ultra Q are both pretty cheap right now, and Ultraman/Godzilla seem to be the heart of this hobby. I'm sure there is some Super Sentai inspiration here and there, but I don't think there are many soft vinyl toys that come straight from the properties I grew up with.

Watched Sturgill Simpson's Sound & Fury on Netflix over the weekend.

I enjoyed it for what it was, an anime music video anthology of sorts. The film had a general narrative with some other short stories mixed in. The styles varied throughout too. It hit upon the 90's cyber-samurai-mecha-bloodbath style, also Afro Samurai.
Musically, it was rock-country, I guess? It was mostly rock, but clearly his vocals are country.

For 42 minutes in length, it's worth checking out.

I'm curious if anyone else has seen it?

I watched part 1 of the Anime Godzilla trilogy. I like the space sci-fi themes. It’s like a traditional Goji movie mixed with an Alien movie, and a pinch of Evangelion. I enjoyed it, but it was a little bogged down with shooty-bang-bang scenes. I think the pacing works well, however, up to and including the final twist. I also think the modern Godzilla design looks nice, so it’s fun to see that the design is similar between this series and the newer English-language movies.

Binge-watched on Prime, The Night Manager, Jack Ryan Seasons 1 & 2 (season 1 was better IMHO)

A trio of Prime opportunities to tout:
    • Patriot: Bone dry black comedy in Espionage Soap clothing. Many extra points awarded for respecting the fact that some audience members can keep up with a story on their own. Caveat: I've only had a look at the first season so far.
    • Undone: A most satisfying tale, done up in that Fleitcher/Bakshi/Linklater rotoscope style. Give it more than one ep, if you're thinking about bailing, as they take their time justifying the use of said animation technique. Bonus points for giving me a pre-Saul Odenkirk fix.
    • Tokyo Vampire Hotel: Sion Sono made a TV show! Exhausting, uneven and gigantically fun! Not for everyone, to be sure, but I don't want a single minute of my time back.

loved undone, gonna give that tokyo vampire hotel a watch. Might watch Jack Ryan at some point, I never got back into man in a high castle.
Been loving watchmen and dark materials. Really impressed by both of them.
But now I've got disney plus and have been watching the avengers animated series all day. The one from 2011. There was an earlier one based more on the 90's comic and a later one. But this 2011 one is pretty good. So many gems I guess I never watched.

Why don't the streaming services post the dvd extra features? Or whatever the modern digital equivalent would be to put next to the show. Do they require special media rights or something? Just curious, but I bet there'd be some interest in them.

Most likely. In my experience, quite often the R1 of a DVD has more extras than the R2 version, for that exact reason. Occasionally the other way round, but most often the American disk had more bonus stuff. I collected a lot of R1 horror films for that reason. Also - American disks were often uncut, where as the UK disks often used cut versions of the film.

Its similar for some old TV shows on DVD, sometimes the background music in the show has been replaced in certain places because of licensing issues.

2 days after graduating my boy got drafted in to work on this so I'm unashamedly biased, but for some warm and fuzzies this festive season . . .

It was a bit of a mixed bag and certain episodes were better than others; however, I found the Dark Tourist on Netflix watchable.

Episode 1 was interesting because I'd just finished watching Narcos.

Just started watching season 2 and man I had forgotten how great this show is.

    Doom Patrol
I was not convinced after the teaser episode it got in the first Titans season but I really like it.
It is different from all the other superhero TV (well, not as different as Legion) and suprisingly entertaining.

What did your kid do on it? It was overall good, and nice to see a lot of 2D animation on Netflix.

Just some clean-up grunt-work to help it across the finish line, but it was a great first gig for him, fresh out of art school.

@Anti Social Andy A lasting career in film and television is an awful lot to do with networking; once you’ve got your foot in the door, start to build relationships (and impress people), other opportunities invariably open up. I haven’t watched the film but congrats to your son for his first step into the industry post grad.

Dude can do-the-do, has the 'gift of the gab' and can certainly sell himself. Just need to work out how best to navigate the transient nature of sub-contracting between studio's. London may be the only place it's possible to do this despite there being possible opportunities in Edinburgh, Manchester and Bristol. :?

Long shot on Netflix is a 40 min documentary. The quick rundown. This man gets charged for murder, and the only saving grace was that he was at a Dodgers game, and curb your enthusiasm just so happened to be filming in the same section he was sitting, this catching him on camera to verify his alibi and save his ass.
