    In Memoriam: Kirk Douglas
I am sorry to hear of the passing of Kirk Douglas late yesterday. I just thought I would take a moment to pay tribute to a respectable actor. The man was a legend of screen, and accomplished so much off-screen as well in his long life. One of the few individuals who we can say went back to the golden age of Hollywood; and as much as one might throw some criticism against that, it cannot be denied that it created (and changed) and industry that has shaped global culture in all subsequent time.

I know it is probably cliché [or maybe even that time has passed now] to point to Spartacus, especially now, as a monumental film and such an influence on me, but it nevertheless doesn't make it any less true. The film will always be among my top favourites of all time, and remains a regular rewatch still after decades. I have, and will always have, a great spot in my heart, and not for any reason other than personal enjoyment. I still recall this was the first Criterion edition I owned, when even DVD's were a 'new thing' and it cost me a pretty penny at the time - but the chance to see this film I always loved in such a gloriously restored edition (something we now take for granted in the digital age) was impressive. I will also forever associate this movie with the fight that Mr. Douglas, together with Otto Preminger initiated and held up, to earn Dalton Trumbo his rightful screenwriting credits on these phenomenal films; in a time when Hollywood - and America - were in such turmoil.

His lengthy filmography and impressive performances speak for themselves. I strongly encourage people who may be unfamiliar with them to check out his opus. I join his family and fans in bidding him a fond farewell, and may his legend live on in his work.

The man was responsible, with the help of his son Michael, getting the amazing book 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' to the big screen. He also starred in the first stage adaptation of it too. He's a legend just for that alone.

That in and of itself is a gem to salute the man for. Both Ken Kesey's novel, and the cinematic interpretation are incredible in their own ways. Wonderful nod, Moog.

An absolute titan from the Hollywood of yesteryear. He graced us with so many memorable Kubrick and non-Kubrick-driven performances through the decades. Let's not forget his role as the free-wheeling master harpooner, Ned Land, in "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea".

Just a few weeks back I was thinking of writing a mindfulness article and using "I am Spartacus " as an observation on responsibility towards ones own existence.

Mr Douglas filled in a lot of lonely times for me as a little boy (does that sound wrong?). Really grateful for all his acting.

Just watched Paths of Glory for the first time today. What a great film, and what a great performance!
