Considering the same pictures get postrd over and over again I don't think anybody is buying these things. The cheaper ones get scooped up but other than that I don't see people post them. They probably get bought and stripped I'd think.

Think I’ve seen a Japanese collector with a RxH our favorite ruiner did.

...when I started getting involved with custom platform toys, I thought Monster Kolor metallic paints were the shit. It was really popular with the resin artists I followed too. I guess it’s because with some of these platform toys, they don’t have features. You can paint it with whatever, and that’s acceptable. You’re expected to slap paint on it, and if you want it to have eight eyes, just paint that on.
Sofubi doesn’t work that way. They’re detailed, not (usually) mass produced, and generally it’s difficult to put your “personal” touches upon. Eight eyes? Fuck that, it has two clearly sculpted eyes RIGHT THERE.
And this is where I feel the problem is. These “painters” (more like ruiners) are treating sofubi like a platform toy. Huge bipedal cat? Hey, let’s paint fucking galaxies on it, and fuck “coloring between the lines” in terms of distinctive details.

    Just some late night thoughts.

I don’t mind at all when people paint my blank toys. Most of us who make toys started somewhere similar and we kind of forget that. Painting over Munnys, [expletive deleted], old toys, dolls, customs for shows? Just my own personal opinion, creating is more rewarding than collecting. You won’t have a homerun paint job your first try, its a lot of trial & error.. Fuglies will be born but it’s all part of the process to get better if that is what interests you.

That is fine and all, but what bothers me is when people are trying to sell their trial and error customs for big bucks (often just because it’s a popular sculpt)

Very fair point. Guess people dislike it when it’s toys people actually have trouble acquiring. Resident ruiner should paint mummy boys vs real head.

    yup, this.

I will still buy cheap rubber/plastic dino toys at the dollar store when I see them. I leave them next to my spray booth and if I’m worried about a color combo I just try it out on those first. Plus you end up with some really REALLY funky dollar store toys. I would never buy a sought after figure and ruin it unless it was blank and even then sometimes I have a hard time because I love blank toys. I have no problem with people painting my blanks that’s why I sell a lot of them and sell them pretty damn cheap as well.

One is the cooler/innovative things I’ve seen an artist do, that I hadn’t seen done before prior, is painting the flash from their toys. Testing how the colors will lay and look against the exact vinyl run they want to paint.

There’s no need when you paint everything the same fugly colors and the base vinyl doesn’t matter :dam:

Maybe it's just getting older, but I legit can't see sh*t with this toy. It has so much going on but the vinyl choice hurts my eyes

As someone who gets a lot of the toys they made customized, it’s starting to bother me more and more. People rush to buy blank releases just to paint them and immediately resell them. This bothers me, someone just missed and wasted their time on a shop drop who actually wanted the blank. I’m not even going to get into the long term issue of the toys just having been erased from existence when collectors are trying to chase down past releases. Maybe I need to go the RxH or Tkom road and publicly ask people to stop painting my toys.

Most of my blanks that I've seen painted over, were commissioned by the owner.
Which has actually produced some really nice paint apps on my toy luckily. But I'd still prefer they stay blank :o
I don't release alot of blanks and when I do, the quantity is low. So it's usually a bummer to see two or three from the run disappear. If i released a shit load of blanks all the time I wouldn't mind them being painted though.

Much truth. Most of us toy makers will accept where we came from no matter how bad it gets.
So wait until you see my rainbow, hung like a stud hamster dong glued on, Bart Simpson brace mouthed, Praying mantis arms glued on, front heavy Skellene!
Honestly I want to paint mine...but make it look like it "is".

And Joe...your figs are absolutely fun to paint. They beg for it (Not counting for immediate profit BS!) . But it is unfortunate for the blank collectors.I agree.
