A lot of the "custom" vs "one-off" debate seems to come back to artist intention. I've never commissioned a toy, but here's a hypothetical for the toy makers. If a collector bought a commission from an artist you have collaborated with in the past, how would you feel about it?

The TKOM route was pretty smart, IMO. Building a database of all your paint work allows us fans a quick confirmation as to whether something is an original or a custom.

I don't think you can ever stop customization, but there is a reasonable balance. I think an open timed run of each sculpt once that can be customized or kept blank with a clear distinction that if you customize other blanks/marbles/strip painted that you are highly likely to be banned from direct purchases forever is totally fair.

I guess a commission is a bit different in the sense a collector bought the toy and not a painter to just resell it in their shop. I guess there are artists out there you’ve worked with and trust to deliver paint in a style you think compliments your work. So no, that’s a situation where a custom toy makes sense.

The COVID-19 toy is actually really cute but the fact that it's in extremely poor taste makes it a hard NAH.

Guess you have to paint in the MVH on the Sam head, but it feels like a forged signature when anyone but Rich does it.

OMG, I can hear Twin Peaks music in my head as I read that description!

I completely get your point... I’m also pretty guilty of adding sculpted details to figures I’ve painted. I haven’t attempted the hampster dong yet though, but if this country goes into a depression soon I just might have to resort to that.

Thanks for the disturbing mental image.

That camo Daimajin is kinda dope, though. It's an odd choice for that particular character, but I can see what he was going for. King Joe has gotten the camo treatment on official releases. There are probably others that I'm unaware of, but I think that would be a really fun take on a lot of mecha kaiju.

Now when you start doing rainbow vomit camo, that's a different story...

Call me a toy ruiner, but I wasn’t happy with the paint job on my Medicom Green Goga at all. I commissioned Topheroy to strip it and paint it as a dinosaur. I sent him a picture of a random dino I found online, and said I want these colors, and he really delivered. I’m probably going to use his services again at some point.
That being said, I don’t like metallic rainbow paint jobs AT ALL. Which is why I specifically asked for regular, opaque colors.

Thats really nice looking! Although a waste of money since you could have had it covered in technicolor vomit /:

    ^^ Ha!

Yep, that Goga paint job looks great to me too. It suits the sculpt, so its not just another show-off firework display, rendered in paint.

i thought a lot of those Medicom reissues had fucking awful paint, so fair play!

My gripe/concern is with the amount of output some of these customizers have over a relatively short amount of time, and stripping toys just to paint over them... and I say this knowing full well I was guilty of all of these things at one point, but after a decade plus, my attitude on things has changed.

Want to have some fun painting toys? Sure, paint the occasional toy and have fun with it... Practice, take your time, get better at it; (or realize you don’t have the ability and stop) and have fun. Paint cheap Bandai gojis or something to learn. Go slow, I know you’re enthusiastic, but go slow. Learn some technique. Don’t churn out Shitty custom painted toy after shitty custom painted toy day after day with the hopes of selling them for big bucks or with no regard to the toys you are painting/painting over.
    Calm down.
And there are so many people painting soft vinyl these days. The market is flooded folks. Mostly by a bunch of hacks. Unless you’ve got a knack for it, or have made a name for yourself already maybe you should reconsider your choice of artistic outlet.

If you think it’s a quick way to make a buck, then you’re approaching it in the wrong way- go do something else. Don’t exist in this hobby solely to paint “custom” versions of toys. Collect and be a part of the community first.

I paint very little these days. The occasional collaboration, maybe one or two commissions a year, and maybe a couple single piece for myself and that’s it. I rarely if ever buy with the intention to paint something just to sell it now. I’m done hounding makers for the chance to collaborate (my apologies to Paul and Rich and anyone else throughout the years for that) and I stopped stripping toys just to paint them.

But I don’t think any of this fugly ass toy painting is going to stop any time soon. People see the prices some makers Or painters command for their toys and all they see is dollar signs, regardless of the talent they do or do not have.

I agree that this is my least favorite. He can make some really gorgeous looking stuff. Not sure why he goes for the lowest hanging fruit with this one. Even some of his other mutant and demon toy's look a bit better.

    Jesus wept.

$200 too! This guy has bigger balls than the sidecock this thing is sporting.

I think this might honestly be the ugliest toy I have ever seen
