I'm in a weird situation. We have had four confirmed cases within our dept and 5 coworkers had extended exposure to one of them. Those five have been sent home and are awaiting test results. Of course one of them I had the pleasure of working with all day Tuesday. Our dept did not tell anyone in our office but we figured it out with the mass Exodus Thursday. I had the joy of telling my family to stay away this weekend and still feel ok. I work with first responders and luckily am no longer in direct public contact but our office at city hall did not shut down. It took until Wednesday afternoon for the SF city manager to finally shutdown city hall to all outside public! For those who saw my IG post with all my retroband stuff...that was about 30mins before I found out all the craziness. I signed up for this, so it is what it is, but damn people still out and about for no reason drives me nuts. I have a compromised immune system due to my paraplegia but continue to work since it's what I've been trained to do. Apparently our new procedure come Monday is to be thermal tested and asked a few questions before entering the building. Crazy times but just had to share. It's funny as all my non first responder friends are home gaming and relaxing and by the time I get home I just want to sleep. I'm definitely counting the days until this passes and if I die, oh well, it's been a wild ride! One of the few perks is the commute into SF right now is epic! I did manage to get some supplies tonight also and had no wait which was nice. Definitely wore my respirator out just in case but for the most part the areas I'm in are complying. We shall see how that goes in another 2 weeks though. Stay safe everyone and remember some of us are going to work so the rest of you will be "safe".

Yep, that's what I'm worried about. Its quiet out there in my city for sure, but I'm still seeing groups of young people walking around together. Not everyone is taking the lockdown seriously, so after a few weeks its going to be interesting. I think they may have to bring the army in to enforce the rules.

Where I work has been given 'essential' status because we contract for some huge oil, gas and aviation companies. This means we will still be able to work through a stricter lockdown, but a lot of our work from the sign industry has dried up, so we're now on a 3 day week going forward. This means I will have to take a day and a half out of my holidays every week or go unpaid for that time.

My brother says I should just take the 3 month 80% the government is offering and say fuck you to my boss, but I feel its better to keep working for as long as I can. If we just closed immediately there would be even less chance of having a job to come back to. If we keep as many customers orders filled as we can now, it might save our jobs in the long run. A lot of small companies are not going to be around when this is finally over.

It is going to get weird all around. I really feel for the self-employed and all the small independent businesses who are going to get hit by this the most. As much as I can, I am trying to support them with online - non-mega company - purchases, and I really look forward to the day when some public venturing allows me to give directly back to my community. Stay safe and healthy everyone,we're all going to have to endure and figure out these struggling times.

@Roger - I listened to this piece / interview when it aired. Definitely good radio. Personally, I ignore EVERYTHING the US (Fed) Government is saying. Going so far as to ignore the CDC and instead look to the WHO. I listen to my Governor (Newsom) in the morning(s) and the LA Mayor (Garcetti) in the evenings for reliable updates. And, like David, John Oliver on Sundays for all the facts, lol. But seriously, it's a sad fucking day when we have to get reliable information from a comedian and his half hour show once a week instead of our so-called trusted leaders on a daily basis...

Our cartoon President is pivoting on everything he says 30 seconds prior, all the while pimping an unproven pharmaceutical that he and his companies literally have stock in. He's removed the man that is supposed to be in charge of oversight on this $2Tril. bailout/stimulus package. As if any of this should be a surprise, but again WTF

It's jarring to me when I see stuff like that, less because of the content and more because of the timing. In New Jersey, we got our "stay home stay safe" order on March 9, and it's been extended into May. People are being prohibited from entering any stores without masks or some other face covering. My coworkers in Missouri told me that their governor finally declared a state of emergency just yesterday. It's like we all live in different countries.

My mom and I went for a drive because we’re all driving each other crazy.
I was in complete disbelief, there were so many people shopping. People without masks. People with their mask hanging from their neck. People hanging out at the big fountain in the middle of town. People not social distancing at all, people waiting in line closer than 6ft at Walmart, at the supermarket, people INSIDE restaurants.

It’s as if everyone believes the virus has fizzled out, and everything is okay again.
Meanwhile, the next town over is struggling to contain the virus in my grandmother’s nursing home.

If we see a resurgence, I won’t be surprised at all.

    We do, in a way.

While the 'pros' list for a federalist system is crazy long, this seems like the perfect storm for hitting every bullet point on the 'cons' list.

This is meant to be philosophical as opposed to political (although it clearly can't be apolitical because, well, it's about a sociopolitical system).

I don't know...I guess I'm just really bummed about how it feels like we're in 50 entirely different boats going whichever the fuck direction. I talk to one friend in Ohio, and they're stockpiling limes to fight off scurvy for their voyage, while a friend in California tells me they're convinced they're found a shorter trade route to Whereveristan so they're going that way, while a third friend in Florida excitedly describes their planned naval blockade.

Maybe I've just been ignorant, but regardless of political polarization or anything else the states have never felt so, I don't know...separate? We sure as balls don't exactly feel crazy united right now.

[Admins, let me know if this is too political or just too fucking maudlin and I'll delete it]

From 6,000 miles away, that's how it appears.

Same could also be said of Europe. Whilst all the pre Brexit rhetoric was about strength in unity and supportive alliance . . . . once the shit hit the fan, it's every man for himself!

An interesting study here from a joint Finnish research project by Aalto University, Finnish Meteorological Institute, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and University of Helsinki, which shows you (the average person) just how aersol spreading occurs, and exactly why proper PPE and social distancing measures are actually important, in spite of the laxadaisacal attitude many are treating this with. And, as an addendum, please also recollect that people carrying the novel coronavirus can distribute it to their surrounding without showing any outside appearances of being 'sick.' This is not some freak thing which only attacks people "on their last leg" and you can avoid just by keeping clear of dodgy looking people having coughing fits. And it is equally not about 'being tough' to fight the COVID-19 infection. Stay home, protect yourselves and your loved ones, to stay safe.

I was surprised by Kevin Smith the director continuing to do video podcasts in person with guests during the lockdown. Most podcasters have switched to Skype, which works perfectly well for conversational podcasting, but that's not good enough for Kevin Smith.

They sit at a table barely 4 foot apart from each other. Jason Mewes was wearing a surgical mask but pushes it aside at one point and coughs. Smith doesn't wear a mask but does wear gloves, but keeps touching his face.

Of course a few concerned fans pointed out he shouldn't be meeting up with people he doesn't share a house with, but they got shouted down by all the fanboys/girls saying 'entertainment is important' etc etc. Like Kevin couldn't possibly be doing anything wrong. Like celebrities get a free pass and don't have to follow the government rules like everyone else!

Well, that doesn't look at all like the previz to some terrifying 'Thing' sequel.

In unrelated news, I'm never leaving my home again,

LA yesterday extended the shelter in place order until mid-May. Not long after, Long Beach did same and I'm sure others will follow suit. Well, hopefully so
