Agreed, but i admire the cut of smote's jib, having the courage of his convictions to slag off a legend ...

I agree wholeheartedly. I’ve never understood the appeal of dehara. His stuff looks like it was sculpted and painted by a stoner in a high school art class.

A quick google search of Dehara’s work to refresh my memory confirms that I am still not a fan, but I actually think I own two small dehara pieces. A micro of a little guy with a bib, and a gachapon squishy keychain figure I got last trip to Japan.

side note: we had planned to visit Japan in May 2020. I miss places.

lol. Yep. And I probably shouldn’t be talking, considering some of the stuff I collect and make. And in the end really it just means more Dehara for you.

I think some of his work is interesting, but this one set is...bizarre. Maybe it's a reference to something I'm too green to understand. In fact, looking at it closer, maybe this is a critique of other trends in the vinyl toy world (Smorkin' Labbits, etc), but I think that would just reinforce my opinion. If it's a satire piece, it's still bringing into focus a lot of the "ugly" in the designer toy community, at least for its time.

That would be Jizo, the stone angel.

The missus and I had a trip planned with six friends to hit Japan this October. We were jazzed ‘cause we were finally going to spend Halloween in various parts of Tokyo. Now we’re hoping to reschedule for next March to catch Hanami again.

So stoked that my missus arranged a trip for us just before Christmas and the current Corona chaos.

I worry that foreign travel won't be the same for quite awhile.

We were hoping to head out again later in the year but, finances aside, the thought of navigating a bustling airport to be sat on a plane full of people with 12 hours of recirculated air and the hustle and bustle of the Tokyo subway doesn't sound too appealing right now.

Hell! even buying a Starbucks feels like it could be a logistical nightmare in the post Corona world.

Well, our last trip was delayed a year by the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster of 2011; so hopefully this time next year I’ll be back there. I still have to attend a sufes and visit AZ in Osaka after all.

I actually like this one. The rainbow is a little more unified and balanced than the Mecha Godzilla one.

Sort of relieved I didn't plan any world travel or more events than the 3 usual ones. I cited "Needed to stir things up in 2020 and be spontaneous! ".

Well...., it's stirred alright and Mr. Spontaneity is drunk and bleeding in the street somewhere out there.

For those who have to work, you are the front line support. We salute you and I can't imagine the dumb-shittery you must tolerate.
Humans are frightening me more than this germ.

Yep - ouch. I can't help but see this sort of work as toy mutilation. The overly glossy 'custom' work on mechagodzilla i posted above is bad enough, but at least its still intact underneath the glop.

Its all a matter of opinion, but I think certain sculpts should be off limits. Like an unwritten rule - leave the classics alone. Have some fucking respect ...

This sort of shit is only going to get worse. I've got to desensitise to 'customs' because they're only getting more popular and I don't see it stopping. These people are receiving too much praise and making money while they do it ...

I still just see it as coat tail riding. Flashy fire work displays with no depth or meaning.
