This one going a short while back (15 March), but held off posting here for reasons. A very special export version of the Bullmark Gigan came up for sale. A lot of the rarer colour schemes on these toys are really interesting to see, but this one is a particular case for me where I think the 'secondary' colour scheme just works so well with the figure. I love seeing the way the green and yellow play off that vinyl base, and how they blend together to that wonderfully lime-y mix. It also has just the right touch of metallic sheen. It is truly a lovely example of Gigan; fit for some great battles in space or on Earth. A beauty of a toy you won't see come up for sale too often.

Bullmark 'export' version Gigan, ended at 152k yen

I am actually really happy the pics were still around for this one for me to save. ^.^ Please enjoy.

All right, here is one to raise the eye of all the vintage heads out there (if any were not following it already). I know a few of us were watching this auction, and it was a biggie. The bidding was fierce on this, and, even though the price went to over a million, the bidding increments were still 1,000yen each time, so the auto-extension on YJA caused this listing to go on for about four hours+ past the end time. For those who don't know, the high end price is because this is a pretty rare/sought after toy. Going back through the 'archives' I just know of two I have seen come for sale in the last ten years. One sold on YJA in November 2011, and was mentioned here by @plasticXO, specifically this example. Sadly we didn't save the details for it, but my google-fu turned up this site where it is listed as sold for a successful bid of 1,000,000 999 Yen. Later (Feb 2017), one sold at the Mandarake Zenbu 79 auction for a cool 1,550,000円. So just some context over this example, and that it is not a freak occurrence or shill bidding that got it to this end price. I mean, it is a beautiful toy, and full props to the winning bidder (and other yakuza parties who were bidding this up for those four hours extra). I don't have this kind of money, but still love 'em. For the rest of us, I recommend checking out the CCP repros.

Masudaya Mitsukubi 3-headed dragon from Spectreman, sold for 1,130,000円

Yep, read it and weep ladies and gentlemen. Or, be like me, and just enjoy the photos of this great kaiju.

So this example was not perfect by any stretch (probably more condition issues than the last two, which might explain the slight drop in price from the Zenbu auction), but I am guessing the next one we seem come up for sale is going to break this price even further. A memorable auction in any case. Thanks goes out to my fellow spectators.

Good nerd company watching a super rare toy auction with minute price increases at an absurdly slow rate over several hours.. was great!

Lovely little Barry I was watching, but alas sold for way higher than I was hoping. I've seen these figures frequently associated with Marusan, though they are unmarked. One from the recent Peekaboo auction looks like you can almost see the circular 'SAN' logo fixed out in the mold, but anyhoo. I don't think these pictures do it justice, I bet he would clean up amazingly. A fun dude.

@ultrakaiju Wow!:shock::shock: Thanks for sharing the CCP 3-Headed Dragon photos! That boggles the mind! :o Can't help but think that a little boy or girl might've scooted it along the floor, a long long time ago, thinking of magical monster battles, and running around flying it through the air, imagining zooming off to never never land, where there is never any homework, and the landscape is made of candy and milkshakes. Talk about a wealthy person's play thing! Wonder if the new owner will also scoot it about on his or her's ultra shiny glass-top penthouse office desk, and dash about flying it through the air too?! :D How does one ship such an expensive toy, I wonder!?

No kidding, Grace. You've nailed it right there. I also wonder about the ability to just drop that kind of money based solely on the typically poor photos YJA auctions have. I mean, even with descriptions, which are rarely helpful on YJA (and this was no exception), you are placing a lot of trust on visuals alone. What about smell, looseness, potential broken pieces, repairs, etc.? There is little recourse it seems - sadly - at least for international buyers, on YJA, and I would not want to get burned when this sort of money is involved. Imagine buying a - very beat up and well driven - car on photos alone.

Well shucks, this lovely condition Alien Zarab - probably the best I have seen - went for an earned 77.5k yen. Which is..... not bad. He is in fact so good looking, I even had some hesitation about the paint, practically new, as minty as they come. I have rarely seen one with such crisp, deep white paint, with heavy coverage where it should be, and another example with this degree of strong dark grey sprays achieving that level; seeing the two in one example is an incredible treat. To find some some very minor issues with this incredible spaceman would be to really be a nitpicking perfectionist. Doubt he ever saw much play, or movement even, in his life. One of those toys I have longed for, for the collection, but always ends up popular. I was well out early for this one given the end price. He is a stunner.

Bullmark Alien Zarab, ended at 77,500円

Thanks for posting @ultrakaiju . I'd been following him for a bit and then he shot up outside of my price range. Like you I was hesitant at how good the paint was as well as how dark the body sprays were compared to the other examples i've seen online. The seller also had a Gomora in excellent shape. I'll add one of these to my collection eventually.

This wasn't on auction, but this Marusan Plamodel Giant Gorilla sold on Mandarake a few days ago for 850,000 yen. I definitely don't have this kind of money, but deeply admire this toy, and can understand it's popularity. Really, any of the Plamodel sets are pretty sought after, especially so complete, unassembled versions, so the price isn't a massive shock. It also has a lot of cross-appeal with a number of genre toy collectors (models, Kong/ape collectors, kaiju/monster fans, vinyl toys). The box is still lovely to see, even if it is really beat up.

@ultrakaiju - The cover art for those Marusan plamodel kits and original headers are just amazing, and this "Giant Gorilla" kit artwork is one of my favorites. It is great to see in any condition.

Completely, Mark. I would just love for someone to do these boxes as reprint posters. This is one I would dearly welcome hanging on my wall. I don't know how many are out there in good condition to get a blown up piece from, but I'd accept it even as is if that was the only option.

Any printmakers on the board want to take this project on (on the DL of course....SB exclusive....)?[

    :)/SPOILER]

The artwork from that Giant Gorilla kit was used for the Marusan 450 Giant Gorilla header card:

I'll talk to Eiji at Marusan and see if he had the whole box scanned or if there are elements that we can do something else with, like maybe stickers.

Stellar Roger, thank you so much. :D I suspect he might only be able to 'permit' it for official Marusan-related releases, but stickers on the next release would be so cool too.

Saving these two giants I was bidding on (won neither, alas) here for my own reference, more than anything. As often happens when two things come up ending at the same time, I spread my bidding across them and walked away with neither. Not rare or expensive, but I was hoping to snag the U7 because the chest armour is a much darker grey they you usually see, and this variant really appealed to me. Anyhow, just wanted to save the photos to come back to.

That was a cool one, Dave. I was admiring how colourful it is. One of those wind-ups I had not actually seen before, but I grant I am not as informed on KR stuff (of which there is just tons). It is just lovely looking though, and I bet a ton of fun for any kind. I was not expecting it to go so high either, but I guess that's probably why a number of us haven't seen it before.

Another nail biting, hair-pulling finish on this auction. What a gorgeous toy though, worth every penny if I had it to spend. This Marusan Goro is the sort of toy that tickles everything in me, both the childhood fan who wants nothing more than to play with these amazing toys, as well as the seasoned (maybe a bit too much!) adult collector of soft vinyl. I love simian toys, I don't care how hyped they have become, and this is as OG as it gets. That combined with the minor obsession I have with light/flesh vinyl. And then Ultra-Q, of course. You are talking a series of things coming together which just makes it. The wonderful paint accents take this toy to a whole other level. I offer my most sincere and deep Japanese bow to the person who painted this at the Marusan factory way back when. Ah, enough of the oogling, on with it.....

Marusan Goro, gray/silver paint on pinkish-orange vinyl, ended at an even 311,000円

Really beautiful condition on this toy, I am so envious of the buyer. And if you are on here, can I please come over and pay this guy a visit?

Another one from today that I was forced to watch from the sidelines. Love this mini sculpt so much, thankfully [especially now, looking at the end price] I can turn to the wonderful skills of Nishimura-san to sate my desire for this amazing Gamera.

Marusan mid-size Gamera, ended at 134k yen.

And still more. Not a whole lot to say, because I think you only need to look at this toy to fall in love with him. Hard to find, let alone win, one of these vintage guys, but for the lucky few who do, I am sure they are an incredible delight. Do check out the reissues though as well - for that ones that exist at any rate - as they offer a very attainable bit of joy. And if anyone happens to have images of one the vintage pieces with balloon intact, please hit me up. Been doing a lot of research on these guys lately, but any extra info is always welcome. This little, beautiful, guy is in as nice a condition as I have seen. Still desperately waiting for Yuji to have a go at these (might have to invest as a community in one to hand the vintage copy over to him).

'Marusan' (note blanked out stamp) Red King Balloon blower/surprise toy, ended at 161k yen

@ultrakaiju Thanks for sharing Steve, I was just about to post the same auction, I'm not a big fan of mini figures but this whole series of balloons fascinates me. Too bad the last auctions have ended up very high lately but are worth every penny.

Hopes dashed once again on this one. One of my true 'grail' pieces. Some day I hope to make it happen, but it was not - alas - destined to be now. Not technically the first version [I think], as I believe this to be a self-paint, but actually that is totally fine with me. {However, if anyone has additional thoughts, I'd welcome hearing about them} I actually love the wabi-sabi nature of the paint yourself toys. Wished I had the funds right now, but it slipped away with some excessive bidding right at the end. C'est la [toy collecting] vie. I really hope that one day this 'old man' will agree to come home with me.
