Thanks Phil! Yeah I have been following Zac's work for a while, for this exact reason - it is right up my alley. Love the stuff he has put out, and he has managed to capture that classic toy look so perfectly. He has done so many great creepy and fun jigglers, and I continue to be happily surprised when he pulls out something new.

Getting back to the thread topic, I do feel I should post I should post some more on the aspiring Matango toy, as probably there is someone on here who might actually be into this sort of phallic hyperdetail. And to be fair to the sculptor, as the recycled pic I posted was quite poor quality. So yeah, here ya go. Appears even it has taken some heavy 'Ooze-it' inspiration; clearly moving in a new direction for soft vinyl. The artist obviously put a lot of time and effort into executing this, so I respect that, but it falls squarely in the section of this hobby which I am happy to leave for others.

Question: is the proliferation (maybe I’m slightly imagining) of matango esque sculpts an opportunist thing or sincere? I had my doubts about knock off pigmons and hedorahs entering the market as in my head those were just made to capitalise on the latest trends. Of course I don’t know jack about the artist you posted and should get off my horse but I just find a lot of dudes these days doing “homages” are doing homages to things they know fuck all about and the world of sofubi is just a trend where any Tom, Dick and Harry can come in and talk the talk about how they love their “Japanese yokai and kaijoos” and indulge in merch, tattoos, toy making etc but wouldn’t know the first fucking thing about it when held up under scrutiny. Such has been my experience with some artists and collectors.

Tl:dr; I doubt this bloke’s commitment to sparkle motion because I’m Toho’s gatekeeping prick.

It's a very valid question, and one I've asked myself many times as well. I have yet to come up with an answer. Like you, I remain skeptical about the 'love' for these properties, when I see them treated.... in the ways that we have. But it's equally true artists can interpret stuff any way they like to. But seeing some of these characters used as the platforms for expressing whatever pent up sexual anxiety, anger, counter-culture sentiment these artists have, leads me often to thing of the people who get off on putting/seeing Sesame Street characters in sexually explicit situations... because it is cool? rebellious? controversial? against 'the man'? I don't know. I typically find such 'art' pedestrian and juvenile. Just come up with your own message and let it stand on its own merits.

Yeah, so I've been meaning to ask you. Can you please ease up on the international license agreements? :| It is so incredibly frustrating for fans outside of Japan.

You put it perfectly. What could be a good introduction to newcomers is instead distorting the classics with personal hangups from insincere fans that would be better placed elsewhere.

    No.

    Half-awake, barely thought through:

The flood comes from the top, no? With the relaxation of license grip, and indeed the direct granting of said permissions, these contentious dollies are the products of Toho's own gatekeeping. For every Rampage Goji or Buta Gorosaurus, we end up with half a dozen dick spores and as many more fresh takes on just how very vaginal the smog monster's eye can be. I'd say that we didn't know how lucky we were in the years where independent artists peered in while Bandai was allowed to be primarily boring with the full menu of monstas... but that just brings me back to product, which is all a Mothra sippee cup ever was. 'Love' has always been the exception.

TL;DR: Didn't expect to wake, in this pre-dawn hour, to a quality Darkoism.

I think the majority of these that we’re discussing are more so unlicensed “homages”. Come on mang, Toho ain’t gonna sign off on half of it. “Gojira needs more gash” said no one ever.

This being said the SwimmyLab Matango and its crudeness was a shock to the system I’ll admit. Hopefully the sacred cow isn’t slayed just yet.

    In this instance, touché.

Okay, not fugly (or even close, compared to other things in this thread), but how are these not just actual Sesame Street plush toys? (with maybe factory error eyes) I don't see any other change, or think that most people would even notice. Colour me confuzed. What is the selling point on them, other than for actual kids who want a Muppet cuddle? Is this supposed to be art? (selling at Uniqlo certainly would suggest otherwise, but whatdoIknow)

CAUTION: live toy listing (gasp!) , get 'em before someone else snags 'em from under you!!!

Everything about Kaws and his popularity confounds me. I don’t get it, never will. It all seems like lazy cash cash grabs at this point and low hanging fruit.

KAWS is the perfect artist for this lowest-common denominator world. He is completely devoid of talent, message, or creativity, and the world LOVES him for it.

I think this Kaws plush trend started with the Snoopy, also a lazy piece of shit. Obviously they sold alright because here we are with these ...

Kaws stopped being an 'artist' and became a 'brand' years ago. Just slap those X's on any famous character and its Kaws. In a way I don't blame him, I expect people approach him with propositions and he just says yay or nay - absolutely zero effort on his part and he makes good money out of it.

If you're a big enough designer label freak and you have money to throw at this unoriginal crap, nobody is gonna stop you. There's a sucker born every minute ...

I think at this stage in his career, the fandom of his merchandise has become more of "validation through brand association" rather than people purely appreciating (and purchasing) the work for what it is.

The Kaws debate always finds its way back around here often and while I personally have some of his older stuff in my collection, I couldn't agree more that he absolutely pivoted to churning out the cash grabs around 2008.

My real question is, when's the bubble going to burst?

Did... did they seriously cut out the letters while the tape was on the toy? Jesus... You always cut the tape on another medium and THEN apply it. Now there’s literally cuts in the damn vinyl. I just don’t get why anyone would do this, holy shit.

I'm not sure this is real... the x on the left/far side eye looks way off. Looks like bad photoshop. Also I imagine the illustration of Ultraman would be more Kaws style rather than just being a chibi version with x's in the eyes.

Looks exactly like the bootleg bullshit you would see in in a dirt mall clothing store right next to the heat-transfer Supreme shirts.. I guess they got over making bootleg coronaviruses and are back on the bootleg hypebeast game.

Also I believe Uniqlo and Kaws both made it clear that last year's release was their final collaboration.. at least for the forseeable future.

Forget Kaws, @The Moog is the artist we all need.
