I think that is actually a really good point you've raised there Joe, which is not brought up enough in these conversations of bootlegs. I wonder how many 'fans' of the artists frequently targeted (let's just say, for the sake of argument, Hirota, Rich, and Mori) would raise their hands to say they have bootlegs/'inspirations' alongside the toys from these artists in their collections?

I’m no expert of RxH, so I literally thought these were just some RxH figs before reading the caption. That’s concerning, because although I’ve seen a lot of sofubi pieces since I started collecting, I still can be fooled. Imagine what a newcomer would fall for...

They look similar to RXH adult figures, but different enough. And he’s referencing Kamen Rider, which RXH certainly does, but mori doesn’t have any exclusive right to those. Good for that guy. I hope he makes them easier to get than Mori does.

Please - even if this guy was the world's biggest Kamen Rider fan would he make these? We all see the similarity and are aware of Mori's original influences - but you're delusional if you think this guy is doing nothing more than trying to hop a carriage on the RxH gravy train.

Love the name of these: “Insect Man”. I mean A+ for effort that’s the best thing I ever fucking heard.

i would agree that the artist is trying to catch some coat tail clout but only because of this teaser which is, to me, very blatant rxh vibes

That work in progress photo looks like Restore meets RxH x L’Amour Supreme’s Necroman. Even with the obvious Kamen Rider influence I’d say the overall silhouette is blatantly derivative of RxH.

Wow, I was on the fence about the first photo, but that photo with the three figures - holy shit what an obvious rip-off. They're not even trying to hide it, I'd love to hear what Mori thinks of these ...

I still don’t see a problem with these. How is this any different than the barbarian action figures that followed Masters of the Universe toys in the 80s? Or transformers knock offs during that craze? Or Pepsi-Cola? (Or Coke, whichever can second).

This guy may be riding the coattails of RXH but that shit happens all the time. The toys themselves don’t look bad, and you need to be informed when you buy. Mori has dug himself in and only really releases toys via his shop in person. The dude making these might have seen that as an opportunity to serve a demographic Mori has chosen to ignore and jumped on it.

@skaldavsatanssol you mention the name.... you do know where the name of this massage board comes from, right? Lol.

Yeah, but KO's of popular toys are usually sold cheaply in large numbers. They take the opportunity of severely undercutting what they are copying, like an affordable alternative - think fake Rolex or whatever. I bet good money these are being pulled in similar small numbers, and sold for similar prices to RxH retail. This guy wont be selling these cheaply, thats for sure.

But you can say that about any bootlegger of niche collectables, does that mean its right? Would you have a different opinion if you were Mori and it was your shit that was blatantly being copied?

That is a whole nother league of giant toy companies who were able to make cartoon shows to sell their wares. You can’t compare RxH to a company like Mattel, Hasbro or Kenner. Mori is an artist making toys in his distinctive style, not a company of 100s of people trying to sell millions of 10 dollar toys to children. I get the frustration that Mori has pretty much made his toys inaccessible outside Japan except at a few events. But what if this guy was doing this to Rich, what if he made a figure that looked 90 percent similar to a DX or Ollie? Would you still support it?

This all reminds me of when Michael Lau started blowing up, a few years later there there are 50 artists making lau looking toys but trying to find a unique selling angle to make money. But now sofubi is blowing up and there are countless guys in the area trying to cash in on the craze. What you say in that regards is spot on Phil, this guy saw the opportunity to make RxH looking toys in a market where they weren’t accessible. And that’s why this toy really sucks, it’s made for the sole purpose of making money.

Can this guy just go away please? I’m pretty sure my eyemeats can’t take looking at another Mechacrotch...creatch.

I guess this is where we see things differently, because while I agree Mori/RXH isn’t Mattel or Hasbro, I think he’s closer to a Mattel or Hasbro than say, Rich or you.

He churns out relatively large amounts of figures on a weekly basis, and it’s not as if he’s painting every piece himself either. I don’t think he does any of the actual manufacturing side of things. He’s got a production line going, and he has chosen to ignore his global fans (which I find particularly shitty, considering how rooted in American pop culture his stuff is, and how much the international collectors helped his company’s popularity and profitability)- all of which is entirely different than the way you, or Rich or Paul or Blobpus or Skulltoys, or any of the vast majority of soft vinyl makers work- none of those people I listed willingly shut the door in the faces of a big percentage of their fans. All of those people I listed try to make their product/art/toys available worldwide to all that may be interested. All these people do multiple conventions, or send items overseas for sale to people who might not ever get to Japan.

As for duping unknowing collectors, that’s where the customer needs to keep themselves informed and educated. Anything popular is going to be imitated. Would I buy a blatant rip-off of Something of yours or Rich? No, probably not. I know the difference though, and I know enough not to be taken in by some flash in the pan cash grab. But I also collect what I like, regardless of what’s popular or valuable.
(Which sucks because I do like the Real Head adult figures, but I’ll be damned if I’m paying the secondary market prices on them. )

but really what is the difference between Mori selling 25 “Real Head” figures at $100 a pop and some random guy selling 25 “Actual Cranium” figures at $100 a pop? I don’t blame him. He’s not straight up duplicating/bootlegging the RXH figure. And if you like the “actual cranium” figure enough to spend $100 on it, than by all means buy one. But if you’re buying any of this stuff because you’re speculating on value or what’s “popular” than I suggest you talk to some comic book/baseball card collectors from the 1990s and ask them how that turned out.

And if you bought one thinking it was a real head toy, that’s on you for not knowing your stuff. These toys aren’t cheap, so do your research.

Kinda reminds me of a Power Ranger "Rose Art Figure Maker" I had, as a kid.

Yep, you can't fault his enthusiasm, but the Mechacrotch is rinsed out .... an endless line of Facebook 'Customisers' are queuing up to paint the thing, giving it a surprising longevity ...

Yep, some of those willy wonka looking paint jobs are not good, but maybe they've earnt the right to fuck about and follow silly trends once in a while if they want to? Its Gargamel FFS. 8)

I didn’t know you’re running a oil massage clinic and what it has to do with the topic at hand but it you meant these forums then I always assumed it was named after the fight figure? If I’m wrong please enlighten me with your wisdom bootleg sempai :)

I like the camo and clear with guts, but pretty disappointed to see that metallic rainbow vomit is the prevailing theme.
