Marusan green base Garamon, ended at 81,000円

You can note the difference in colour scheme between these two versions. Both are lovely, with naturally the earlier one being more sought after. However in this case the figure had quite a few air bubbles in the plastic which would affect its overall value. Really lovely paint though, with just ca couple of face rubs. A great amount of the pale yellow on this example and especially that blue around his body, that seems like a real plus. Such warm colours, and the aging on him has the effect of making it seem even nicer to me. Another lovely one for someone on the hunt.

Bullmark green base Garamon, ended at 63,500円

Another quite nice one, this one coming from Toy's King's seemingly endless supply of cool toys, put up on YJA for low starting bids. Maybe less blue paint on this guy, a bit of wear to some spots, but fair cream/yellow paint and the face is generally clean. Again, a fair example, and this one went for much less than the previous. For a figure that has no major damage, vinyl flaws, looseness, etc., I can't really see anything in particular wrong with it - you'd have to be very picky. Frankly, I think the timing of this one (closely on the heels of the last two) worked extremely well in someone's favour. This was basically a steal [even if it is a big investment]. Someone got very lucky (at least I think so); I only wish that it had been me. :|

Marusan red base Garamon, ended at 93,500円

And the Gary flood continues. Here we have a red Marusan version. A treat to see, like the others. Honestly, even with all the repros that have been done [very well, mind] through the many years, there is still something special about seeing the OG. If ever I had to choose between the two colours it would be a real challenge, but still one I would welcome.... though never be confident I made the right decision, ha! ;) There were not many flaws to note on this one, some minor areas of paint wear, and some spotting or colour transfer, and probably the main thing was some slight damage on his tail and minor bubbling. Quite a good face, and still some areas of the remaining silver, which is often the first to go with play wear.

It said in the description that one of the legs was loose. Still not a bad deal at all, but it was one of the reasons I decided not to go for it.

Oh you're right I did miss that in the description somehow. Thanks for clarifying. I still think even with some looseness this ended up being a great buy. Looseness is also so impossible to gauge in auctions, because it is one of those things whose description is fully subjective. I know I've tried to get clarification on a lot of toys in the past but in the end you never know until you pick up a toy in hand what it will be like. So, sort of because of that, I always consider it a strong risk with vintage toys, and anytime when it doesn't happen more of a pleasant turn than not.

Let me clarify further. The main reason I didn’t go for it was a lack of proper funds, but I used the loose leg to justify not dipping into auxiliary accounts

Garamon has never been within my main focus of vintage collecting but when seeing this beautiful parade of Garamones that @ultrakaiju has so kindly shared with us, I feel that little worm that feels when some figure clicks on your head. In general none of the final prices of these auctions were Bad compared to the prices that I have seen of the same versions in stores like Mandarake and others in Japan, in general they ended on average 30,000 yen below the market price.
@gazpacho you should have pulled the trigger on one of those Garamons if you had the opportunity, in me little experience as a collector In general you regrets more of what you let go than what you catch even if you feel that at that moment you paid a little more than you would have liked .

Absolutely Roger. It was a good price, but I've got too many other irons in the fire right now. Garamon, while rare, does come up fairly regularly and it will be something for me to hunt down the road. For me, there are so many bullmarks/marusans still left to hunt that there is always another on the horizon when I let one slip through the cracks. Always good to keep something(s) on the list for later.

Another series of interesting toys, and also a really great Ultra Q contingent. :)

    The first, 06.14
Marusan blue Namegon, ended at 312,000円

A really lovely example. It might not seem 'mint' as such, for a toy of this age - and popularity - I think this is as near a good condition as any I have seen come up for sale. Really clean paint, decent amount of that light silver touch spray, and lots of white spots, which are often worn off as they protrude out of the sculpt. The vinyl is also in really nice shape. No surprise that there was a lot of interest from the community on this one, judging from the bids, but actually all things considered I had expected him to fetch more maybe, as these are really sought after toys, and they have sold at this price years ago already. But, please, if you are like me, just enjoy the pics of this wonderful toy. He is such a delight. Those crazy eyestalks, the derpy pupils, the chunky Marusan sculpt; it is as fun as they can come, new or old. Highly unlikely I will even hold one of these in my life I think, but the photos alone give me a huge little kid grin. :D Kawaii!

    This, another Toy's King entry:

    the second, 06.17
Marusan blue Namegon, ended at 151,000円

Once again, similar to the Garys above, it is a pleasure to see one of these come up for sale. To see two however, so closely together, is really something. Alas, this one only suffers by comparison to the former, and I think, on its own, would have gone even higher or attracted more attention; so sadly probably some unfortunate timing, but one which may have worked in the lucky buyer's favour. Not quite as nice an example, this Namegon has a goodly amount of condition issues, notably some vinyl tearing on one of the eye stalks, and then cracking along his base. I am not sure if the pupils were originally painted on this one, or perhaps not, as you can see the silver paint quite strongly where they would be, and no signs of particular wear there or remnants of the black paint; so that might be an interesting variant take it or leave it. You'll also note much higher degree of paint wear in this second snail, more played and loved. But for all that, wabi sabi - I love this dude, and would accept him with open arms.

    * something else some keen eyes and other vintage fans on here might appreciate is the colour of this example. While the former looks very 'royal blue' in colour of the base, this latter one is that gorgeous shade of deep-blue green you might just recognise from some other '66 Marusan vinyls ;)

That was a beauty Roger, I appreciate seeing this nice pink version. He had some paint wear, and some other rubbing/condition issues, but a treat to see, and I am not surprised he ended there.

You are absolutely right Steve it’s a beautiful piece despite the scratches, I get the impression that the spikes on the head more than scraped it´s a paint reaction of the golden color and for some reason the paint melted. Several months ago the brown version also came out in YJP but it had painted with black marker one side of the body and for the same reason it went at a very affordable price; ¥16,000. I still regret for not having pulled the trigger.

Nice one Roger. I had not seen that, and am totally genuinely shocked at that price if it was a vintage Marusan. The marker is of course unfortunate, but seemingly just covered up the owner's name; it is totally liveable with to me - especially at that price - and in fact doesn't even show from the front. That was one helluva an incredible steal for 16k, WOW. I would have bid in a heartbeat (and I am not even a Booska nut).

Yup, I saw this listing and was surprised where it ended. While there always seems to be an occasional auction (or two) that makes you think "huh?" and "wow!" simultaneously, this has been happening for a while now with listings for Kikaida bootlegs.

I haven't noticed similar price increases for bootleg toys of other tokusatsu characters so it makes me wonder where all these new Kikaida collectors with deep pockets are coming from.

I am not an expert in Kikaider so do not pay much attention to me, but as far as I have understood this version it’s one of the rarest: 1) it is taller than the others Kikaida bootlegs 2) the head is totally different so that’s why some people call it the round head. The fact that the toy still has the original price on one foot is also an extra for me. My theory is that it is the dead stock of some toy workshop because you can see that the figures were never played and also the same seller had more sales with up to 4 pieces or more of the same figure.

    -------------
I'd heard the term round head used for a certain type of Kikaida bootleg but always thought it was in reference to a different bootleg. In addition to the different, rounder head on this version (when compared to the Takatoku/Bandai standard size), it has a different torso with the yellow/silver lines on the upper torso almost coming together to form an "X." I'm not sure if the slightly taller height is mainly due to the difference in the torso, the head, or the length of the legs.

I went back and checked some of my completed auction listings for this bootleg version and saw that one previously sold for 150K yen which makes me think 2 for 201K yen seem like a bargain, I suppose. I was able to pick up mine (years ago) for 20-30K yen which makes me think the recent pricing for Kikaida bootlegs has moved to a totally different level which I still don't fully understand.

Yes, same seller as above. What is remarkable was that only did this person have an incredible stash of toys they seem to have 'unearthed' from the ages - they posted a lot of good toys - but they also have so many multiples of the toys they got. And, to make it a whole extra thing, the toys they have, like the Devilman Roger posted above, are some of the best condition examples you can hope to find come up for auction. To see such a grouping like this (or some of the others) is sort of staggering, even when for some of them any individual toy might not be especially rare. We were discussing the benefits/drawbacks to listing these large lots, and while I can see points on both sides, the bigger question mark for me is on the buyer's end actually, as to where these are going to end up.

I asked myself the same thing Steve; where these Devilman will end up, it is very likely that in some store but if some private collector won them, I hope and leave them all together I would leave them all to have my Devilmans army.
