    Hey SB experts....

Shopping in the time of corona led me to bid and win this on yahoo Japan. Can anyone venture a guess as to what figure was pulled from it? I would love to display it with a finished piece. I can provide more pics as needed. Thanks!

I'm leaning towards a mass-produced Bandai vinyl maybe? Only because there are two top torsos on the one frame.. they must have had big numbers for this guy in mind at the time. If it was vintage and a more obscure maker that could also be the case - I'm sure production costs were much lower back then. So not much help I'm sorry!

The discussions Roger and I have had in person lean in a similar direction, more mass produced figure. Roger can you chime in on this with what you think?

True! That didn't even cross my mind... at first I thought the weird joint line across the chest/shoulders reminded be of those Bandai figures you see on racks. However comparing it to the size of the Coke box underneath - finger/hand puppet might be a better guess.

Pretty cool, maybe you could send it to the folks in Colorado to make a pull for you. Or someone in Japan like Shirahama or Science Patrol. Though shipping costs would suck.

We actually talked about that as well! I want to find someone with a fiber optic camera to see if the inside would shed any light on what it’s final form looks like

To me the sculpt looked like either Godzilla 2000 or Final Wars Godzilla. Offhand I don't know of a figure that separates at the chest like this one does. Maybe something like a bust or a bank or a cup topper?

I agree with Roger, I was immediately thinking Godzilla 2000/FW for these too, and imagine they were for some sort of promotional item. In fact, I feel like I've seen it before, but would have to do some digging (there is just so much 'neo' era Goji merchandising out there. Nevertheless, I think it is a really cool buy, David. How much did you snag these for (if you care to say)? I was actually looking at another set of really old soft vinyl molds on Mercari, which had the top and bottom pieces seemingly, but was so wary of what the shipping would be frankly. And I think, outside of sending them to someone like Corey who might be able to 'reproduce' something really cool, would be hard to display outside of a museum or something with the proper space (which I certainly don't have). The old molds are really a piece of history to me though, of toy production in general, and I think should be preserved where we can. Really cool to see, even if these are newer ones.

After shipping within japan to Zenmarket and shipping to the USA along with other items I would rough it out to around $145-150 total. It was a single bid of 10,000 yen. The seller also had a human figure mold but that would not have yielded and a full figure. It looked like a more recent sentai type character. Had it been ultra related I may have gone for that also. That did not get a bid and when it was last listed the opening bid was down to 2000 yen.

it is a neat piece and am excited to preserve it and eventually be able to display it. It’s an unwieldy one that will need a proper base made for it to sit on but that shouldn’t be that hard to make, can’t sit it on a coke box forever. I’ve always been a fan of the process and when I was collecting coins I acquired a die from the US mint that was used to make one of the statehood quarters, so this seemed like a similar purchase.

interesting to note that nowhere one the mold was a marking or number or symbol to be found.

Thanks Dave. To me, even as not a big later-era Godzilla dude (I think actually looking at it, it seems like it might be more Heisei than Millennium), that seems like a really great buy! I mean, considering the prices some people now pay for 'art' vinyl toys right out the gate, this is really a sweet piece of toy making history. I am definitely interested in it, and will help to track down any info I can on the piece that came out of it when I can.

Love the bumpy texture! Great adoption too! It would be great to have vinyl samples pulled and then display alongside the master. If it was a split mold you could do a quick sample using jello. I wonder if there is a similar soft flexible inexpensive material (short of the real vinyl pull) you could pour as a partial fill (say, just the head only) with a piece of cord, and once hardened pull it out for a sample of at least the head. Perhaps a chemist or foodie person could think of something? i.e. some sort of putty or cornstarchy material that you can easily brush/scrub off any test residue without risking damage to the mold. Definitely keep us posted of any updates. If Chance Priest ever gets his USA vinyl factory going, perhaps he'd do a gratis test pull? He's in Texas (msg through Facebook).

Amazing Roger!! So quickly sleuthed, and such a great answer. :) Please pass on sincere thanks from all of us to those two knowledgeable chaps on FB.

And now to track down one of these to display alongside.

Yes that will be the challenge now...probably cost more than the mold did!

that’s pretty cool! I wonder about where the molds from old toys end up from time to time. Logistically it’s be tough, but it’d be neat to see you get some goji busts pulled from that mold.

So actually, that is even more interesting come to think of it, if these came from Yuji's workshop actually. I am sure if so, he would appreciate us all appreciating it still in turn. Another thing is that, from the mold, I was expecting this to have a closed/filled in mouth. Seeing the final product like that, and thinking about the pulling needed to get all those small parts out, just incredible. Not sure how hard these will be to track down, but I suspect not too bad. I will keep my eyes open for you though, Dave.

Or maybe its missing the teeth? Inserted separately?

    Still cool though ...

M1, nice. I actually see those busts pop up on Mandarake somewhat often in the sub 100 range. If you were to do a search some might still be up for sale there.

So technically, are these not still the property of M1?

How did they end up on YJA?

Curious if the teeth are in there or a separate mold or casting?

Yeah, my guess is a plastic V shaped wedge with gums and all the teeth, slots into its mouth ...

Something about this whole thread is just... heartwarming. To echo some sentiments - great work, gang, and excellent buy, David!
