Hey guys and gals, while I am not a super audiophile by any means, I do appreciate it, and know that there are some on the board who are. We have existing threads for music, and a thread for [the other] vinyl appreciation, so I thought it would be sensible to have a place for the general equipment/setups discussions.

I actually have a question for anyone out there I am hoping to get some help on. I recently started setting up a new system, and came into some Bang & Olufsen Beovox 2400 speakers (vintage late 70s, early 80s). I was hoping to use these on my Technics amp, but am having issues with the sound. There could definitely be something wrong mechanically, but as these are sort of unique (having the typical Beovox connections) I wanted to pick peoples brains who would be in the know. If not for the pandemic I could probably ask for some advice at a local shop, but the hifi world is probably right up there with comics as being overtly welcoming to questions from inexperienced folks. I did do some digging online, but there is so much info out there, and honestly I have not [yet] been able to find that useful nugget. It could be a simple answer though.

So basically, are people here familiar with these systems, and their speaker jacks? Can you use them with 'standard'/non-Beovox receivers or do I need a pre-amp? If I remove the connectors and use the wiring to the typical stereo inputs should/would this work? I have one with open cables which I have connected, and the sound comes out, but it is incredibly quiet, and I have to crank the volume on the amp to get to hear it. I haven't taken the grills off yet (figuring that part out) to check the speakers, but could be the foam is typically degraded (but then would you get clear sound?). I just thought I would ask here before faffing around further and/or driving myself insane with this. Thanks all!

PS - I am a self-professed total newb with these things so appreciate any advice

You might want to check what impedance your receiver is set at. Those speakers may be 4 ohm, instead of the more common 8 ohm.
My receiver won't do 4 ohm...

Cheers, thanks Matt, that's great information I'll check this out tonight when I can.

For what it's worth, the amp I am using is rated for 4-16 ohms each for the main or remote speakers, and 8-16 ohms with the main + remote. The Beovox speakers I have are indeed 4 Ω (according to the website below), so as I just had the one plugged in, it theoretically should have worked.

And some receivers/amps have a switch and you just slide it from where it's at, to the other side and check the sound again.

I'm not at all familiar with the Beovox connectors, but just googled them. Based on the pics, it looks to me like you need to use the proprietary connectors on your speaker wire. So:

Beovox Speaker > Beovox Connector soldered to speaker wire --- Bare Speaker Wire / Banana Plug / Whatever > Any amp/receiver

What's your music source (LP, tape, CD?). I ask because you mentioned a pre-amp. I don't think that's the issue with your speakers/receiver (but as I said, I'm not familiar). But if your receiver doesn't have a phono-in you'd need a pre-amp between your turntable and the line-in on your receiver. Without that the music would be very quiet, like you're describing. Good luck!

Early in quarantine we finally got some long shelves in our living room, to get rid of the ikea. And now I finally have my turntable set-up in an easily accessible area. I've been playing more records in the past 4 months than I have in the past 20 years!

So, I was testing this out with phono input (Technics turntable), but I also tried out the tuner built into the receiver and achieved the same results. The connectors on the B&O systems (at least this era ones) are such a pain, they were Apple forced-compatibility way before it was even a notion. One of the speakers I have has had the connector removed, for just this reason I am guessing, which is why I was able to use the raw speaker wire directly into the receiver ports. I didn't think it was the pre-amp really, but that's just something that came up in trying to find a solution. There is 50 years worth of information I need to sort through though, and almost all if it is for modern B&O systems, so it's a slog. These are apparently quite nice though when used on their side from what I have read. I am really looking to set this up eventually (it was for a planned move), but now debating whether I'll have to consider this a burned investment.

Great to finally see this come to fruition, though I did worry modular people wouldn't bite with all this n00bish stereo racket  Been waiting for this since stumbling upon vog_island, Lixx, smo9monster, Kerk1 and sensensempompom discussing the topic in the Zollmen Collections-thread back in 2015 (I'm sure people have discussed it elsewhere too):
Reposting some pictures from there, although the focus of this new thread appears in the background, in the hope of getting this going:

Leaving it to @Temporal Marauder and @ARB (and others!) to bring their relative recent shares in the The "What You Got In The Mail That Isn't A Vinyl Toy" Thread here should they see fit.

Strange as being a life long vinyl record collector and a professional record grader I do not have any special set up whatsoever. Consumer electronics all the way. I’ve got a 1200 deck and it’s fine for me and I know it will outlive me. That said I work for an audiophile junky and my bestie as well has a sick setup. I used to check all my final mixes on his setup before sending stuff off to get mastered.
As far as modulars go I’m pretty old school. I got into them well before they became fashionable and I got known as a modular guy when it started to blow up. I’ve never thought of myself as such.
About a year ago a sick friend gifted me a Dot Com case filled with a few modules. Of course I had to fill it up due to my ocd. They sound good. Nothing but basic functionality tho. The same friend loaned me his ARP 2600 too for a few weeks and I recorded the basic tracks for an album with that. As soon as I get done mixing the new Temporal Marauder album I’ll be finishing the next solo thing. Shit sorry to ramble. I’ll post in a modular thread if there is one but I know Jack shit about audiophile gear outside what I hear or see my boss going on about.

The other day I got this Pocket Operator PO-33 KO by Teenage Engineering.
Fun little sample and when hooked up to my sound system quite powerful sound.

My early morning coffee is properly working and my memory too: Brian "Guumon" Mahoney once told me about this crazy event in Tokyo:

Looks like it was an exciting show.

I was able to visit the second edition but unfortunately no Paul K on a video modular synth. :(
    Oh well...
