It’s such a fucking perfect balance of smooth, creased, and bumpy. I love it. I can’t choose a favorite, but Creature is definitely at the top of my universal monsters list. OhEmGee, Will they do a Wolfman?! I feel like I’ve seen a Headlock/Knuckle Wolfman... maybe airbrushed on something? Am I imagining this..? The blank TEAL also adding to this guy’s rad flavor for me. Olive and neon yellow/green base would look fucking sick as well...
I’m overly eager for this drop. I’m glad he said it’s comin’ soon. I may have been too excited when I said this even beats Lil’ Diablo for me. I’ll have to wait until a painted version is released, but I am really, really lovin’ the Kid Creature. @Spaceman Yells He actually teased a wolf character not too long ago. I think I posted it on the previous page. He’s wearing a biker jacket, and it’s all sorts of awesome! I’m sure it wouldn’t be too out of the realm to see the wolf head/hands on a Lil’ Frankie body!
While I want this dude to fit in with the rest of the monsters, I would love to see him with some loose airbrush sprays...especially some directional sprays. Make him feel really warm and yellow from underneath and dark/murky on top...or vice versa. And some pink or blue fades at the edges of his fingers/toes/fins.
@animator Since Amabie has been much more a traditional sofubi toy, by way of loose sprays and some rubs, it’s possible! If there are to be any airbrush sprays, though, I’d wager maybe some customs by Knuckle would be in order. Even a green base vinyl with a clean, black rub and painted accents would give the textures and shape TONS of life!
Goddamn massive news day for Headlock today, geez. This time with a lotto comin’ out of Superman Toys, for those with a hunger for Lil’ Diablo. Unfortunately for majority of collectors, this is a Hong Kong only lottery. Second piece in a week that’ll be hunted on the aftermarket! Can’t wait to see a full reveal of the crewneck graphic, but I got somethin’ of my early wish for a blue skin/white suit! View this post on Instagram
@cavemanmac That is a damn fine idea! Hell, I’d love to see a white devil/white suit version where only the accents and details are painted black. Almost like a reverse Bounty Hunter version. And then maybe a pinstripe suit. Gomez Addams homage.
What's the word on these smaller Amabie? Looks not quite micro size, but pocketable and fun to handle. I've been back and forth on trying to get the larger sculpt, but after seeing this I think the mini is more my speed.
@zindabad The smaller Amabie are actually the original resin casts sculpted by Knuckle. The sofubi version was sculpted by him as well, but obviously scales up a bit more. The resin ones are definitely pocketable. The sofubi version is just a bit smaller than a Kumon, so it’s a little chunk. But not pocketable.
Ah, okay. Resin is a new dimension of stress, so I'll have to continue wringing my hands over the bigger ones thank you!
While on the subject, I recently received my first sofubi version of Amabie by way of Headlock, released through the fine peeps at Creature Bazaar. I do enjoy this toy quite a bit. Another one I can see lookin’ awesome in droves, or even just a smaller grouping. Single pull, no articulation, very minimal paints, but an easily readable and clean sculpt(by none other than Knuckle). I basically cliff noted the legend, so pardon how badly written this is: Spoiler: Amabie Yokai Legend According to Japanese legend, a glowing object was seen nightly in the Kumamoto sea in 1846 Edo Period. While being investigated by the Higo Province town’s official, a creature arose from the sea and revealed itself as Amabie. Described by the townsman as having three legs, a bird - like beak, long hair, and mermaid scales from the neck down, Amabie told the townsman of a prophecy of great harvest for the next six years from that year. And if anyone should fall ill to draw a picture of Amabie, show it to the sick, and they will be healed. The water yokai then returned to the sea. The story and portrait illustration was soon printed on woodblock bulletins and spread throughout Japan. Spoiler
^^^ The most relevant toy of 2020! Way classier than most of the chumps jumping on the 'lets make a virus toy' bandwagon!
@Anti Social Andy I’m hard pressed to agree. While these goons are busy chasing any attention they can with ‘covid toys’ the Amabie’s actual lore coincides with its illustration healing the sick of epidemics. In general I’m a fan of Japanese yokai and folklore, and how kept alive, told and believed it still is amongst them culturally. It’s pretty rad to see a company like Headlock breathe life into the stories with a simple, but fun toy. I should also note that as a point of local pride, the Amabie, in full, was designed, sculpted, cast and pulled in Ken/Knuckle’s home of Nagoya, Japan.
Lovely pic, the Knuckle version of Amabie is still the best one I've seen done. A near-perfect translation of his style! I've been eagerly awaiting 2 of the initial resin versions Knuckle did, *fingers crossed* I think they finally ship this week.
@Kerk1 Thank you! It’s a pretty chunky toy! Something about just the eyes, ear fins and belly being sprayed just works. Lookin’ forward to photos of your resin versions!
Anybody see the prices that Headlock toys have been selling for. The Eyeball one sold for over $1600 on YAJ. And full size Green Franky for $600 on eBay. The thirst is real!!!
It’s wild and slightly ridiculous. When the mindset of “gotta have it” comes at any cost necessary, the aftermarket starts climbing into unattainable territory, and flipping becomes rampant. Just this past March I found and bought an original 2002 Sick Boy Billy, still bagged and headered, for $127. More recently, a couple original 2002 SBB sold on YJA for, I think, over $300 or $400. An Oculus Beatnik in the brown suit selling for $1,600, if that really is the case, is just fuckin’ dumb to me.
The prices have certainly become insane - I'd been after these guys for ages and finally snagged this set + the green (both without packaging) for just under $100 about a year ago. This probably won't sell at this but still
@Kerk1 $881?! What the hell goes through these people’s minds??? “Oh, this’ll definitely get me paid.” My Glob, people are monsters. There’s two 15” Wonder Fulman that are half this price, and those are also overpriced!!! Thank goodness I was #Blest with a gifted set of the green Wonder Fulman minis. I’d love one of the 10” versions, but I haven’t seen a single one pop up. Aside from that, one of the only colder figures I’d love to track down is the Adidas x Spanky Ray the Aerosol.
The recent consignment sale on M world was also nuts. I think the eyeball guy in the suit was selling for over a grand. Also, love love love amabie. Love how many japanese artists are making their own. When tattoo parlors open up again in california I think I'm getting an amabie on my leg.
M - World has always jacked up prices, so I’m not surprised by the practice, but a bit shocked at the amount. I’m in full agreement with the Amabie. Such a great, single pull toy. And it’s nice and chunky! I can also appreciate how many variants have been released already. Seems like one that’s more readily available.
I will admit to being struck by the Amabie craze and specifically the Headlock version. I recently overpaid for one and would love to add more (at a more reasonable price). I know Knuckle has stated more are coming and will be more readily available in all countries that carry his goods. Not sure though where those will land. I’d love to add other figures or future releases, but also have my own personal limits on aftermarket prices. I don’t think any of us would say this is unique to Headlock.
