I’m curious what the result would have been if the idea was sculpted by hand instead.

If I was designing toys on a computer I would not be able to satiate the urge to reach through the screen to hold the design in my hand to get an actual feel for the work.
    It seems torturous.

Im sure it would have had some more charm to it. In my opinion a lot of sculpts on 3d programs loose a lot of character that clay sculpts can have.
That can probably be remedied once the figure itself is printed which I think is sorta the cool part about 3d printing.

3D looses a since of scale and asymmetry.
Oftentimes looking really good, or shit.
Being able to copy and paste obj is lazy.

though 3D is great for tackling engineering problems.

Sofubi collectors don’t want perfection in form.
    Makers should know this.

But 3D printing out the basic form and covering it up with clay might be good to start with. But the 3d printer is good at sculpting and understands the form it could work great.

I think it depends on what you’re sculpting. To be up front, I wholeheartedly prefer organic clay sculpting to 3D printing, but I think the latter does have its place. The two best, immediate 3D examples I can think of for/against it are the Iron Monster and the Krawluss. Iron Monster, in my opinion, is a perfect example of how 3D printing the sculpt was the best option with the best outcome. Smooth, symmetrical, detailed, and captured a specific, mirrored likeness. The Krawluss, while rad, I think suffered(and I use that word very loosely) from the 3D sculpting and not having the artists’ touch of the clay. The body is very boxy, and the neck/shoulders where the heads attach is straight and flat. Had it been something of a challenging, joint sculpt I think the body would’ve flowed a bit more to a unique silhouette and there’d probably have been defined shoulders and necks. That’s nitpicking, of course. It’s still a great beast of a figure. Paul Kaiju’s Boss Charged is another positive example of 3D printing. I’m more than positive Paul’s hand sculpt would’ve been insanely awesome, especially the massive scale. But Unbox did a fantastic job with the turnarounds and the Boss Charged is damn near perfect.

The line is pretty blurry these days. One of the methods I see a lot now is 3D sculpting then the piece is printed out as usual. The next step is where it gets interesting. Molding the printed version and making the wax then getting it into the hands of the artist to change it however he or she wants. So in the end it gets the benefit of 3D and can still retain the artist touch.

@Waterbear Thats actually pretty genius. Gargamel are the only dudes I’ve heard that sculpt in wax, rathe than clay, eliminating the entire silicone/wax molding process. Though I’ve also heard working with the wax is rather difficult. It’s pretty thick stuff when solidified. I suppose for me it comes down to what the sculpt is. When you’re doin’ somethin’ super smooth, want it to be perfectly perfect, symmetrical; perhaps 3D sculpting could work best. But there’s something about hand sculpting a monster, textured or otherwise, that’s unbeatable by way of a mound of clay. You just can’t capture unique individuality with a computer. Even still, I do think the 3D sculpts into soft vinyl toys does have its place, even more so now than ever.

Retroband is all wax all the time with his big vinyl figures and his mini stuff. I've seen Grody Shogun use wax to sculpt his own stuff sometimes too. I think wax is a bit easier to use personally but it requires specialized tools like a heat pen that can be annoying.

@Waterbear I don’t know how I could’ve forgotten that Luke sculpts in wax on occasion. In hindsight it totally makes sense that Aaron does, as well. For the types of textures and melty details he gets it seems like wax would garnish the best possible results. I suppose I was still stuck in the mindset of the Ggml dudes bein’ the rare case ‘cause I was told that info five or six years ago, and also because the wax in Japan is pretty different than what’s used here. Though that could very well no longer be the case!

The secret to the wax mix is, it needs to have a high melting point. so it doesn’t melt during electroplating.

I know, I did wax and silicone molds for several figures in Japan. Admittedly, and embarrassingly, I don’t remember how to do any of it since it was five years ago. But there was also a specific compound added to the mixture that helped keep it from melting during electroplating. Though I can’t recall the factory I visited mentioning the electroplating baths being hot. And they weren’t emitting steam or heat when I photographed ‘em.

It wouldn’t steam like water. The electroplating requires Agitation, heat and current with an acid suspension.

I was always curious about that. Many years ago I wanted to make a toy in Japan and spoke with Velocitron about getting it done. The price was pretty intimidating so I asked if I could skip the waxing process(which by itself was going to be several thousands of dollars)by sculpting in wax myself. He said whatever wax I would use wouldn't be good for the process so even if I sculpted in wax they would need to mold/wax it themselves anyway. So I asked what kind of wax it was so I could use that one. He said it was a "secret" and wouldn't tell me. Then I asked if he could just sell me a chunk of it so I could use his wax to sculpt the toy then send it to him. Mind you the costs even without the waxing process would have still been over 10 grand. He said no so I decided not to work with him on the project. Seeing how things eventually turned out with so many people who he made toys for I feel like I dodged a fucking bullet at this point.

@3wing Ah, he didn’t go into those specifics. Only that the acids broke down the copper into dust particles before the electromagnetic current was switched on to attract the particles to the wax. I just remember the factory head removing some sculpts that were suspended in the bath with bare hands. I had to get pretty close with the lens for some details shots of both the sculpts and copper balls in the bath, and there was no heat emanating.

@Waterbear He wasn't exactly fibbing about the wax mixture being a secret. By trade, the Japanese keep A LOT under wraps and close to the chest. And while the mixture/‘recipe’ is generally the same, some do it slightly different than others. But it is very, very specific.

It’s cool to know more artists are going straight into sculpting, though. Cleaning up wax molds is extremely tedious and time consuming, so eliminating that part of the process is a huge time saver I’d imagine!

That was kind of his bread and butter and at the end his MO was charging people for wax. Delivering 20 shitty pull and disappearing. Because I’ve had many other avenues willing to send me the wax directly. He probably just didn’t want to do the project if he couldn’t bill you for the wax.
Rampage also makes a rough paper clay sculpt and then does his detailing in wax.

Coolest thing about 3D for me has been scanning and resizing, scanning and modifying an existing fig, such as Dualbat, and bringing sculpts back from being burnt to a cinder. Beyond that, I will probably never use it totally.

The other side of the baby doll head is covered in eyes (with hair sprigs between them). It’s actually making my skin crawl.

    Finger penis.
Time for some ugly toy analysis. So, if fingers are penises and arms, which would make more sense? If the toy has a finger for an arm, its penis is an arm because it’s a finger. If fingers are penises, then the toy has penis arms.
No matter what is what, it’s reaching for the gross baby thing’s mouth, so if fingers are penises and penises are arms, then... just get that “finger” away from the gross baby thing’s face.

Holy shit, that’s a weird one. Give half the face and body tribal tattoos and piercings and it’d be Dee Snyder as Captain Howdy in Strangeland.
