I'm old enough to remember the green cross code man. Thanks for giving Vader that looming presence Mr. Prowse. A fellow Bristolian, rest in peace me old babber! From the BBC: Dave Prowse, the Bristolian former bodybuilder best known for playing Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy, has died aged 85. Prowse was cast as Vader for his imposing physique, even though the role was voiced by James Earl Jones. The weightlifter-turned-actor was most proud of playing the Green Cross Code Man. The role, promoting road safety in the UK, earned him an MBE.
I remember being distinctly really disappointed when I missed his attendance at a local convention - a really rare occurrence back in the day. Much like with his co-actor Mr. Mayhew (who he was also offered first dibs on the role of, by the way, but choosing instead to go with the what he rightfully knew would be the memorable villain) the suit actors are often overlooked for the contribution they had to bringing personality, emotion and gravitas to what are otherwise just words on a page; they defined who those characters are known as today in many ways. Sad to hear of his passing. Vader is, without any question, one of the most iconic and recognizable villains of any pop culture/art form. And to be a part of that is an incredible legacy. While I was never exposed to the Green Cross Code Man, I do remember a very imposing on screen presence unmasked.
Bill Bailey did a funny bit in his act about Vader being voiced by Prowse himself, in his 'West Country' accent. Also referred to as a 'Wurzel' accent ... I think Izzard might of done something on it too ... can't remember.
