There’s an Instagram ad blocker? What’s it called? If I could get rid of ads, I’d be a happy ig user. The ads are worse than the lame reels/tiktok videos ig forces on users.

Adblock plus is a freebie. Works on every site, not just IG.

Adblock will work only if you're using Instagram through a browser. The app will circumvent anything you are using. I use a Pi-Hole on my network and still get ads on Instagram.

Thanks to IG, I just can’t rationalize buying new releases directly from the artist at retail price at all anymore. Everything is so damn expensive now. New artists are looking at the prices of other toy makers, and they try to match it. IG prayer-hand people will pay it because lotteries draw in the hype... one big hype circlejerk upholding that toy’s ridiculous price.
Then when time goes by and there’s no more hype, someone will be unloading that toy at a much lower price somewhere down the line. It’s just a matter of patience for me, heh.
I really don’t need IG for any of that. But I do think IG has completely changed the game. It’s added this whole air of competition to it. Competing against others in the lottery, comparing collections, trying to become “groupies” of certain toy artists... it’s really something I don’t want to be a part of.

The thing about IG is I can interact directly with artists and curate what I want to follow and view. Most of the blogs and websites that curate their own lists do not have the content I'm looking for. Way too mainstream and rarely have smaller artists. I've had really great interactions and people have given me great information on IG. I can't get this just by endlessly scrolling through Mandarake.

I understand why people want to avoid social media but it really does allow many of these small makers and business owners a chance to build an audience and create a market for their toys.

you can use it however you like, it’s a powerful social tool.
it’s lost most of it’s initial appeal and houses many a bro.
there’s a ton of collectors on that don’t play the big money raffles.
working with images is easy, whatever language.
there’s shops selling vintage toys, flea market finds, toy festivals pics..
access to toy makers, collecting habits, photos and info.
there’s plenty of reasonable collectors and toy makers left.
use it alongside your skullbrain, find some diamonds

If social media irks you . . . don't participate.

If toy collecting becomes a burden . . . time to call it a day.

    Life's short . . . do what you enjoy!

Hmmmmmmm, I recall someone saying long ago if you don't like what's on the TV or playing on the radio, turn the channel. Wise words

My two favorite IG accounts do flea market type sales. Random mostly vintage toys where they number them in a pic and you claim them in the comments. Usually less than 3 bucks a toys. Love it! Fills the huge void that the lack of flea markets and thrift stores created when the pandemic started.

Are these two responses meant to be read as slam poetry or something, or are they just both formatted weirdly?

Thanks to IG, to be completely honest, I know and can follow some of my favorite releases. So I guess I’m okay with it. Sure, it’s had its issues. More people know about releases and then you have little time or chance to get it, I think that’s the big one for me. In the past though, before sofubi was more of a thing on social media, I’d have to hunt them down on ebay for shit ass over the top flipper prices. Naturally I like avoiding that.
I would be curious though if it was all suddenly abandoned. I got into sofubi when the ball was rolling with social media and I know little of how the community was beforehand, spare for forums like here. I guess it’s like any community, and people like to outreach and have their art seen(and paid for if people like it).

Not sure but neither seem to be taking any shots. From what I see Andy seems to speak in some form of Yoda Haiku with most posts ending in "then maybe _____ is not for you."

People call it "social media" but this is really just the internet now. There is so much content that being able to curate your feed or what you are interested in weeds out so much of the BS.

There are toy makers and collectors all over the world. When you add in the functionality and ease of use these platforms make it extremely easy to find things you are interested in. I think you can collect without this but you aren't going to be able to find out about shop drops and lottos without it (for the most part).

Looks like Creature Bazaar is exploring using Popshop Live for more of their drops after DCON. That being said, much of the functionality and what POPSHOP is doing is "social media." You get notifications/alerts regarding new releases and upcoming shows/events.

It's a more positive spin on the alternative of 'Do whatever you want . . . my field of fucks to give is barren!'

Twice in this thread you’ve used the word “curate” in regards to your Instagram feed. It sounds pretentious, and I’m pretty sure you’re using it wrong. You select what you see in your feed (you don’t own or truly control those images.) You curate your collection (but that sounds just as pretentious).

As for social media platforms and ease of use... I preferred when this hobby was more under radar, and you had to do some legwork and digging to find things. I miss the sense of mystery and wonder that existed. I miss the idea of RFSO. Now it’s more of a competition on who can show off the most or get the most likes or followers. But you gotta move with the times, so I use IG.

Sofubi is Real Baller Shit Only now. Gotta pay to play, bigger buy-ins and 90% of it is forgotten a month after release.

Talk about pretentiousness. I'm definitely using the word correctly - try a dictionary. Curating something has nothing to do with owning something. That is just your own lack of understanding. Unsure why you think it is normal or necessary to critique someones use of a work you don't like. That is just lame.

Instagram, for its intended purpose of photo sharing, is fantastic. I’ve loved the idea, implement it heavily myself, and it still connects ton of collectors to each other, artists and toys. But I do think it’s devolved itself to the aforementioned aspects of pissing contests, gratuitous “dick” measuring, hype beasting, devoid of conversation in many respects outside of unnecessary amounts of emojis and “WANT/NEED” comments. I see a lot of pages now that have good chunks of lottery reposts or badly Photoshopped “fan art” with captions of “HOPE I CAN GET IT/HOPE IT’LL BE MY FIRST”. I’m definitely b¡tching, unnecessarily, and it’s all subjective. What I see/read very easily could not even remotely come off as such to someone else. But I’d much rather see and read posts of what you collect, a little bit of why(maybe), as opposed to the weird, perceived begging.
