I can only hope someone buys this and strips that horror show of a paint job off it.

Wow. I knew it was going to be bad, but didn’t think it’d be this bad. Awful color choices aside, they couldn’t even put the blue dots into the suction cups properly... that’s how fucking lazy this painter is.

there really is a laziness about it. Even the color choices looks lazy. I think it's a bootleg, otherwise this person will lose money on painting and selling this toy.

... I just checked on IG, and it’s exactly who I thought it was.
Apparently it’s a “personal piece” and not for sale. It very well could be a real Kraken DX.

Yes, someone commented that it looked garish and hoped it was a bootleg, but our favourite toy ruiner proudly confirmed its the 'real deal'.

Can you imagine the full circle if in 10yrs this guy is making toys to the level of MVH.

I mean, I recall some rather tacky early RealHead customs Rich made (street fighter and marvel colors) and they were cause célèbre themselves.

This hobby really proves itself to be ever-rewarding. This is the kinda folk art garbage many curatorial frens would give an arm an a leg to behold in their fields. Here it’s just some more hot steaming, v-color vomit.

I’ve often thought the same about a lot of sofubi, that is could be considered folk art. Not just the stuff in this thread but a lot of vintage figures and even popular new makers I find a bit on the cruder side like buta and swimmy design labs. Rename this thread to sofubi folk art.

Did you just compare the street fighter and other customs I made to this hot mess ? Are you smoking the same dope he is ? I definitely wasn’t the best when I started, but for Christ’s sake I wasn’t that bad....

The silver lining of this paint job is if he tries to sell this on eBay for 100,000 USD we know EXACTLY who it is.

oh, god no! I’m smoking far better stuff. I just thought about the circle of being a fan, developing skill, and then making your own work. You started in ‘meh’ and ended up in ‘nice’. I mean, less pus and skulls pls, but to each their own. ;P

as tacky as I find making toys about superheroes or video games, yours are good and the paints well done. It was a nice beginning to what is now a great career. we all start somewhere with our own influences.
It’s funny that this is the toy this chum ruined, who is probably a mega fan of yours

This toy is crap, like even with the nice sculpt in a silver platter it still looks like garbage with this paint app.

There’s one big difference. These new makers come out the gate replicating what they’ve seen paint wise and sculpt wise from established toy artists and think they are immediately entitled to the same level of respect and popularity. It’s why I can’t stand and don’t bother with 95 percent of these new monkey see monkey do toy makers.
He can correct me if I’m wrong, but back then most custom work was western, with people not just spraying toys but painting and drawing pictures and art on them. I see that influence in those early street fighter customs and I think it was very fitting for the time and well done, still blending Japanese techniques of colorful sprays. Now these guys just spray color and try to imitate people like Rich or Blobpus or real head or m1 and many others. There is no originality to it, just immitation.

Was just about say the same thing! The difference between Rich and whoever painted that kraken dx is the when Rich started out, it was clear or quickly became clear that Rich had an aptitude/talent for it and it continued to get better.

The problem with the great majority of these customizers is that they don’t have the knack, the aptitude or the talent to paint these toys well. It’s easy to pick up an airbrush and paint and start spraying, but to do it and have the results be pleasing isn’t.

And some of these customizers have been doing it for years without any sort of growth or advancement in their ability. Practice doesn’t make perfect with some folks.

and as for a folk art nature- that’s fine, I like the primitive nature of the medium of soft vinyl- but to be a soft vinyl toy customizer (and in this case a shitty customizer) I think it’s just too damned expensive to do these days.

It’s part of why I don’t paint much at all- I’m not going to shell out hundreds of dollars for one of Rich’s toys just to paint it in the hopes that I can recoup the cost and make a few dollars. That’s silly.

the people painting toys that end up in this thread should paint funko pops- they’re cheaper, easier to get, and the fan base for them already exhibits a lack of taste so they might have better luck selling their terribly painted toys, or at least a better cost/profit ratio.

Another thing that I see a lot of is new makers with unrealistic prices. 1st release of a toy that's $400 with 200 followers on IG. Pricing is a sensitive subject around here, whether in relation to retail or aftermarket, but those kind of prices are earned over time by establishing yourself in the scene. The volume of Hirota/MVH/Nag rip-offs out there priced like anyone knows who they are is insane.

Yes, it seems collectors on FB and Instagram lead the pack in this practice. It usually goes like this:

    1. Buy gorgeous production Desu for inflated price and post on FB.
    2. Receive comments like 'Awesome', 'Rad' and 'Need'.
    3. After a week on the shelf, proclaim your Desu to be too drab and boring, and say you will be getting it customised by some airbrush jockey.
    4. Post Desu covered in gaudy metallic slop/tiger stripes/go faster stripes/with chrome rims.
    5. Receive comments like 'I love you', 'Marry me' and 'Can I put your balls in my mouth and hum the Star Spangled banner?'.
