Trying to decide between the 2. What are your thoughts? ATT 3G is faster but I'm not sure how much coverage of 3G there is from ATT to verizon.
although i dont own one, id say the iphone. im holding out until the 4G version comes around. http://gizmodo.com/5520164/this-is-apples-next-iphone
I don't own any cell phone, but my coworker was just commenting on how his droid was rather rinky-dink compared to the iPhone. But right now I'm rather cheesed-off with Apple due to their crap customer service with regards to my computer.
Coverage depends on where you live. If you are near a major city you should be fine with AT&T, but if not Verizon will be better. I have an iPhone so I'm biased, but I've worked with both for my job and the iPhone is much better. And I'll definitely be upgrading my 3G to the 4th gen iPhone when my contract is up in a few months.
My contact just expired and I have been reading tons of reviews and chatting with friends about phones. I settled on the iphone 3GS.
I have a droid. It's ok I really hated it at first. There's definitely a delayed response you have to get used to, that leads to a lot of misdialing at first. Now I'm used to it and like it. My gf has a droid as well and in the 4 months she's had the phone has had to replace it twice.
ugh, both my girlfriend and I have iPhones and we are actually so willing do dump our iPhones that we're eating the cost to get out of our contract. We got our HTC Incredibles through Amazon! Believe it or not, you can get one for $149 + accessory kit + free shipping. Best we saw at Verizon was $199...after a $100 mail in rebate. Boo...... There were a number of factors that pointed to us dropping the iPhone. Terrible reception, battery life that sucks (i.e. full charge + one 1/2 hour phone call = battery down to 30%), not open source, no Flash (see below), the fact you're tied ONLY to iTunes (which sucks donkey dick) and frankly it's not that practical. Most games on the system tend to be cumbersome, it's 100% NOT functional for any form of work productivity, etc. Then there's Apple itself. Sure, you can rush out and get the 4G but you know what? 6 months from now you'll see the 4GS that has all of the features people were expecting and guess what? you now have to re-buy everything and oohhh, their adapters won't work with your old version so get ready to pony up more money. Now about Flash. Jobs has gone on a number of bizarre tirades against Flash in favor of HTML5. Sure, HTML5 is cool and can do a bunch but you know one of the reasons he's pushing for it, is that the video format (H264...which is supported by quicktime) is actually a license that hosting services / servers must PAY for. Hmm. Also, HTML5 is so new that there's no real documentation for it, let alone servers that are set up for it. It'll be a few years before we start seeing a number of sites using this. Flash, on the flip-side has more of a toe-hold and Jobs couldn't work a way into getting his claws on it so that it would turn into a revenue generator. There are a number of videos out there that show Android 2.2 (update in a few weeks) running FULL Flash 10.1. Not Lite, but the same version that desktops see. What this means is that any developer, animator, geek who has flash or one of the free open source versions can make a site, game, etc that can be viewed and added to Android....but not on the iPhone. I could go on but it boiled down to we were not happy with the iPhone and did take Apple's advice of "Think Differently" and made the right choice to switch over!
Wow, Thanks for the replys. I live in a medium sized down to maybe verizon would be better. The only thing I really had against Iphone was there was no multi-tasking, which the 4G will cover, but I still don't know if that will solve the battery problem. Ugh. Also I get great service with my blackberry, don't have the 3g model so I'm not sure how well if at all the 3g will come through. ATT servers are faster but scattered, I think I would rather be able to get 3g wherever I go at lesser of a speed than a lot of speed in selected areas. I am not sure either about the Incredible, if the speakers are good all the way up or not. I'm a big fan of speaker phone so that's a set back for me if the speakers are not "Incredible". CCPFan, How do you guys like the Incredible and Verizon network now?
What's the difference between Apple releasing a new phone every year and HTC releasing how many new phones a year? Also, and I'm not saying I'm against flash although I have yet to see it used to it's full potential on a mobile, but what about all of the security issues that flash brings? I use my phone for a lot of sensitive things (i.e. banking and whatnot). I'd hate be be browsing the mobile web and be a the mercy of a hacker so easily due to flash. I agree with you on that fact that it will take awhile for HTML5 to get up and running to a point where flash is today but do you not feel that Adobe has been kind of lackadaisical in their development department? Sure we're on 10.1 right now, but what really have they done? I feel like they've gone stale and HTML5 might be enough to kick them in the butt and make them start working again. jcrazy, in regards to your question, I think your choice has more to do with what you want out of your phone. I have heard people who are happy with their respective phones, both iPhones and Droids, however they certainly both have their quirks.
What I'd really recommend is doing what we did - go into a store and play around with each phone and see which you like
iPhone vs. HTC. When the iPhone 4G comes out I am hoping the iPod Touch gets a similar upgrade. And I am scoring one of those. All the signs point to this since if you look at Apples "Special Deals" in their online store, they are selling all of the current iPod Touch models at pretty decent discount. Regarding HTML5 versus Flash, I actually don't think it's going to take time for that to get up and running. My main gig is as a web developer, and Flash is a piece of junk. The broad adoption of HTML5 on browsers has really kick started a lot of dev work to discard Flash and move to HTML5. Most sites that have Flash actually don't use it that deeply. Mainly user interface. Well, for the past 2 years I've been doing cool Flash-like stuff for UI with Javascript and everyone's happy. HTML5 only makes things better. And the added kick to Flash: When Google was attacked by zombie computers using Internet Explorer that kick-started the death of IE that every web dev I know wants. I'm not going to complain about the billable hours I have spent trying to get IE to render pages correctly despite every other browser in the world working well. But as a whole, the web would be a better world that is easier to navigate (literally) and program if IE is kicked to the curb or Microsoft actually adopts open standards. Heck, the past 10 months have been intense for me, but thanks to IE users on the sites I work on going down, I can justify saying "Look, I'm not spending 8 hours making this work for IE; let's move onto something else..." Also, Adobe has done an utterly abysmal job with not only Flash but their whole Creative Suite. Bloated, crash prone, unstable and used mainly because there's no other choice. Give me a real viable Photoshop alternative that can handle CMYK right and do a few other things, and I'd trash it in a second. Apple is a tad hypocritical when it comes to open standards, but Adobe is delusional and incompetent. I don't support them willfully.
Now you can get a 16gig iphone 3GS @ Walmart for $97! Wish that this could've been announced yesterday! It looks like a tip to an AT&T store and Walmert are in my future.
You know how I feel... After playing with many iPhones, and owning MANY Blackberries, I went with a Moto Droid... And 2 people I know switched to one and love them. I just upgraded to the HTC Incredible which from what i've seen, makes the iphone look dumb...
That's because they are blowing out their inventory before June 7 when the 4th gen version is announced. I have to wait until Sept until my contract is up to actually get one, which sucks.
I'm hoping that the new iphone is released before June 27th...if that's the case I should be able to exchange my 3Gs for one.
I love my 32gig iPhone...decided to get it when my iPod died a few months ago. I've never had any problems with speed or service plus I can read shit on here at any time and any place.
Usually Apple has their newly announced products on sale the day of the announcement or shortly thereafter (the iPad was an exception), so I'm guessing the 4th gen iPhone should go on sale around June 7.
an Apple presentation will be on jun 7, there are strong rumors about steve presenting the new iphone
Well, Verizon employees are not allowed to go on vacations in June, so... Start your wallets! http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20002727-260.html btw, beware of a multitasking OS: means background apps that suck up more resources, need constant data access, etc. I've got a Nexus One that needs juice and connectivity all the time. Better sign up for an unlimited data plan.
I also read that AT&T employees aren't allowed to take vacation in June as in previous years when the new iphones were released.
If Adobe can rewrite the flash edition of the new Wired Mag for iPad in an Apple approved objective-C language, then why doesn't Adobe put that same effort into web browsing??? It seems Adobe is capable to do it... they haven't presented one good workable iphone with flash to Apple. Here is the video to the new Wired Mag for iPad. It looks amazing and feels like something fresh for digital magazine. http://link.brightcove.com/services/pla ... 8021017001 I am 100% sure that iPhone will be announced on June 7th. There has been too many leaks and this time no surprises. An upgrade from my 2G is going to be sweet.
Is Flash really that imporant on a mobile device? I thought it might be a BIG deal for the ipad, but it isn't. Now that I have an iphone I don't feel likes it's a BIG deal for that either.
i wish i would of saw this thread sooner... because the walmart deal was going on like a week ago, sorry :/ yeah the 3gs just dropped to $97 at wal-mart... this means that the new phone is about to be announced... it was just about this time last year that the 3gs was announced. i remember because it was a few weeks after i had just got my 3g, and i was somewhat mad. sucks that you did already purchase a phone, but you do get 30 days to return it... so if your lucky, the new one will drop, and u can upgrade right away... the bad part though is if apple hasnt already announced it, then i highly doubt it will be in stores for purchase in the next 30 days :/
