This surprisingly (or not) is a conversation that regularly comes up at work. Though, I must point out, we are not talking about an individual of the titular Commodore's song; and it is not wolves, but animals in general. The caveat here is that there is generally no access to tools/weapons, we are talking pure physical confrontation. Throw in different types of weapons, and things turn considerably, depending on the animal. My only comment here is that people generally overestimate their abilities, and underestimate the primal nature and strength of animals. If you have ever observed animals on the hunt in the wild (and not just some shitty youtube footage of a zoo attack) you should know what I mean.
It all started when my buddy told me a story about the neighborhood "mean dog". His daughter was playing outside and this dog got loose and sprinted toward her as she ran in the house. She told her pops and he had a talk with the owner. Regardless, we both came to the decision that as a human, it would be silly to lose a fight to a dog. I understand that I kind of have a skewed perspective being that I am 6'4" 275. I also own a large dog who is a rescue, and is just now coming out of his puppy phase. All of the bullshit that I've dealt with trying to train him, and prove that I am the alpha, has given me a little more insight into what a pissed off dog is like. Because at the end of the day, a wolf is just a really pissed rebellious dog who rolls with a posse. When you compare the wolf to other large domestic dogs, I would totally rather fight the wolf. Really really pissed Rottweiler? Really really pissed Cane Corso? The wolf would be way easier in my opinion. So if 1 wolf ain't so bad, 2 should at the very least be a challenge. I would also like to clearly state that there is no malicious intent in this claim. I just think it's something I'm capable of. I'm not going to call some cock fighting promoter (who probably knows a dude who can get his hands on some wolves) to set up an event just to fight some wolves. If you need a scenario: I'm walking through the woods, and I happen upon just 2 wolves that proceed to attack me... Some 1 man and 2 wolves enter, 1 man leaves, Thunder Dome shit is going down! I understand that I will have wounds (some if not all very severe), but with the advances in modern medicine, I firmly believe that I would survive the incident, get a book deal, and go on Letterman... I'm also not typing this up because I need or want people to think I'm a hard ass. I, like you, understand it's a ridiculous claim, but it's fun to talk about. And with that, discuss!
if your a fast 275 I'll put money on you, simple fact every animal on this planet has design flaws, a dogs is it only has a mouth that's it one trick poney, and if your willing to reach your hand in a dogs mouth and grab it's bottom jaw before it gets you... bam your leverage just nuetralized everything that dog has, people wrestle gators and win all the time, sharks too, humans can be badasses of nature too we got here somehow
First off, you all must live around some lame ass wolves. Wolves and dogs are different on both the physical and mental side of things. Here in Alaska the wolves are large powerful predators that do not mess around. While their mouths may be their only effective weapon they are adept at using it to bring down animals as large as a moose. That's 2000 pounds of muscle and hoof. Moose kill people quite easily. Unlike dogs they have spent every day of their adult life sizing up, outsmarting and killing for their very survival. Dogs on the other hand have had 100's of years of domestication and being fed to dull their abilities and nature. While dogs can certainly do some damage and a human could kill a wolf if the situation went the right way, underestimating a wolf could easily be fatal. With two in play one wolf would only have to tie up your hands for a second and the other would be tearing out your jugular. Their speed and reaction time is far beyond most humans ability to respond and they are intelligent pack hunters. They know once you are bleeding sufficiently they merely need to play with you till you get weak and then they will finish it. Likely not to come up though, wolf attacks on humans are rare. They have learned over centuries that humans are not fair fighters and they tend to avoid us. When attacking a pack will often back off if the prey starts to fight back effectively. The loss of even a single wolf can affect the pack in serious ways and is not taken lightly. I watched a bear and a pack of wolves fight over a moose carcass for about 20 minutes. The bear was to powerful and slow and the wolves could not create enough threat to make the bear leave. In the end they grumbled at each other and all started eating it together. If only humans were as civilized and level headed.
Thanks for setting the story straight Daimyo How far away were you from the bear and wolves? Were you watching from above or with binoculars or something? I probably would have shat myself if something like that happened near me...
Binoculars are quite handy. I was downwind from the scene and they were focused on the task at hand. Wildlife can be scary but not as scary as ice climbing!
When i used to cruise around central american jungles the general wisdom was that jaguars, bullsharks, crocs, fer-de-lance and whatever else mother nature could throw at you were all infinitely less dangerous than humans. And among the humans soldiers were less dangerous than bandits, brrrr...bandits !
Sure ! I'm talking general risk. In the event that any of the aforementionned animals decides they want to use your balls for bookends, you're basically done for. Even big daddy severen would be toast vs a jaguar. I once saw a (captive) jaguar bite right through a dead horses head like it was styrofoam, ka-runch !! Crocs are also nasty, but people know the local fauna and they do not swim in croc or even gator infested waters. Once again general risk.
I can't believe I'm responding to this let alone read it, but my mom takes in dogs all the time. She sometimes has to keep them separated because once in a while they just won't get along. Well, one year the dog from down stairs go out the same time one of the dogs from upstairs got out and commenced to attack the shit out of each other. My mom jumped in the middle so of course I had to jump in the middle. I thought I was going to lose my hand. Those motherfuckers didn't want to stop for shit. I don't believe two wolves would lose to a man of any size. Unless they just had a full meal and just decided to turn and walk away. Make sure you carry a video camera when you go walking in the woods! I'd love to see this.
Wow. Yeah... One feeble wolf and I would give severen a fighting chance. Two wolves? No chance in hell. What would you do when they flanked you? Sure you might get a hold of one of the attackers as it bit into your arm and began viciously wrenching back and forth. But what of the second attacker coming in from the opposite angle? Likely tearing into your calf or Achilles tendon, throwing you off balance, and dragging you to the ground. And once you are on the ground... that's a wrap. They'd swarm on your ass. There is a reason the police use dogs to bring down large offenders. And I have seen some big mofos go down quick once a dog lays into them. Wolf = dogx3.
I'm glad I don't have to worry about jaguars! F that man. Wolves and bears I can deal with but I think mountain lions are worse since they aren't afraid of attacking people. Bears will leave you alone 90% of the time if you act right and wolves will try and avoid you but those big cats just don't mess around. Tigers included as the video demonstrates so succinctly. You know what scares me more than big cats though is polar bears. Quiet, intelligent killers, plain and simple. Neither brown or black bears view us a normal meal or great threat and often leave us alone but a polar bear sees you as a diner. In one instance on the north slope a bear had seen people waving to one another to gain the others attention. Being that the only dark patches on the bear are the nose and paws, the bear started covering its nose with one paw and waving with the other while standing up right. Unsuspecting humans would think someone with dark gloves was waving at them from a distance and move closer to investigate. Now that's the kind of problem solving intellect I'm just not comfortable with in a large predatory species.
i once saw a housecat named sophie rip a guy's ball-sack in two. (we started calling him camel-toe joe after the operation.) in unarmed combat nature always wins. i'd put my money on almost any pair from noah's ark ending a human hell, i've even seen a porcupine and her baby fend off three lionesses. the porcs stood back to back, didn't give an inch and stomped their feet while shaking. took the lions about an hour to give up and try to find something else to chew i'd put my money on a porcupine against two wolves lasting longer than you, no offence bro'
Seriously. Even a relatively calm animal can pose a huge danger. And these aren't filled with deer shot either. The backcountry is a beautiful place, but not to be taken for granted, even by seasoned locals. To think otherwise is just stupidity. I would hope that people learn from the likes of Christopher McCandless and Timothy Treadwell; sympathetic or not, the lessons are clear.
