It's so funny you describe the light quality like that. When I first turned them on the word that came to mind was "antiseptic". Almost like refrigerator lighting. Good call on the risers too. I thought the ones they used at the Kaiju Invades NY show looked great. I've seen a few boardmembers place furniture underneath. I think Kozik uses flat file cabinets per 2 detolfs.
Great post. I'm sure they used those same LED lights in the recent MOCA Murakami exhibit to light individual licensed toys and whatnot. I will definitely look into getting some of these - your setup looks killer as a result! Also, if anyone can recommend reasonable rsiers for detolfs. I have to be careful in earthquake prone LA tho.
That really does look fantastic. I'd also like to say I love how your collection looks. Focused and neatly put together.
Thank you form the post on the lights - I will definitely rip out my heating lamps and replace with these
Ah! I've always been so annoyed with how my bottom shelves kinda get lost in the shade as I only have Non lights at the top of each detolf. Like everyone said, these look fantastic. May need to look into these and rewire all my damn detolfs. UGH. I loved what they used at the showroom too, but I think those were homemade and not bought. They look like 4 pieces of plywood put together and finished. They look great and would love to have them for mine.
Looks great, and great set up in the office. I envy the space you have. Btw, will these lights hurt the vinyl? I always worry about light damaging the color of the toys...
Thanks for the idea Meczila, I still can't get the lighting right though. I was looking at Mori's cabinet pictures and saw the lighting was going along the corners of the cabinets. I'm going to try that next with the LED strip lighting but with the Detolf cabinets having no trim along the edges my concern is that it might look sloppy.
Great collection there! I considered the strips and rope lighting as well. Post your results if you try them out.
all of these awesome pics are making me debate if I should get a detolf or not. i love how my stuff looks on shelves and tables all around one room, but it does take up a crap load of space (and picks up dust)
oh your doraemon stuff is so great...the whole setup is fantastic! thanks for sharing. i might consider this myself with my shelving, although we'll see how it translates outside of a detolf
these cases look incredible. you know i think one toy really throws the whole thing off tho. you should totally get rid of that balzac glow obake, ruins it. id be happy to take it off your hands and you rule for posting ab the lights, we all ripped em off you ill have pictures up sooner or later i love the cases w em, they totally needed em and i dont think anything could work better.
I just did 2 shelves before I totally lost me cool and nearly sent vinyl flying across the room at curious cats! I fucking hate cables and cords!!! top shelves tomorrow. But it does look great!!! Cheers for the heads up!
Backtrack did you get them up? I'm really wanting to do this but I know myself and I have "0" patience. Are they that difficult to install?
I got them up, but not without more cursing. Getting them in, without taking everything is not really the easiest, or simplest way, but That was the way I opted for. The worst part is "hiding" all the cables. Blue tack doesn't work to hold the lights up either, they only fall down the next day and cause domino like chaos. I tried to use double sided tape to hold down the wires, but they kind of have a mind of their own and do what they want. All in all, it looks good, and I'm just being a perfectionist. Do it!!! It's worth the frustration.
i put them up also... not sure if i hid the wires all that well, but i dont think it looks so bad. i used the sticky discs that were included with the lights to attach them to the shelves, so i will probably never be able to move them without destroying the adhesive and leaving sticky foam all over the shelves. what do you all do with the wire pack at the top of the detolf and where is the switch?
Thats why I tried the blutack. I dove straight in with the sticky stuff on the bottom 2 shelves, then rethought it the whole thing and opted for the blutack... but then reverted to the sticky disc thingy. A razor and some heavy solvent should be able to remove the sticky bit if you ever need to. In the UK we have on off switches at the socket, so I just tied the wires up as well as I could and pretend they aren't noticeable, tucked behind the clear glass back But with the white wall, it's not terrible, and I guess to be fair, everyone but me is looking at the toys and won't notice the wires. Oh, yeah, but anyway, I can access the the on/off switch at the socket and not worry about all the rest of the rather excessively long cable stuffed up behind the back. Not that that helps you any...
yeah i guess you have a point. people aren't even looking at my shelf. hell, my wife doesn't either. i just sit and stare and cry alone
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I turned the lights off as I was about to go to bed, and still had the LEDs on, I just gazed lovingly for a while... had to pull myself away in the end The lights really do make so much of a difference.
