Well I finally have gotten everything in order and was able to get my first attempt at airbrushing a sofubi under my belt! I can see tons of glaring problems with it, but I had an absolute blast doing this. I selected a flesh-colored Pestar that I've had for years. I haven't clear-coated him as I think I'm going to go in with some brushwork here and there as well. I know there are a lot of 'overdone' parts, but man I'm super happy on how it came out for a first go!

This actually looks surprisingly natural. From someone who doesn't know much about vintage kaiju, if you told me those were the original colors, I'd believe you.

Almost posted a pop about making/painting Japanese vinyl being every tattooists 'rite of passage' these days but fortunately checked your profile first!

Going uncharacteristically constructive, my only thought is that (whilst I understand why you've done it and there are exceptions), covering every inch of base vinyl instead of working with it always feels like a bit of a cop-out and a very 'western' way of working . . . I personally prefer the more traditional base vinyl colour showing through more.

But WTF do I know! ;)

I hear you for sure - I have a few more 'fleshies' to work with and I'm going to be trying different experiments with each one. To me that base color is meant to be as close to 'white' as possible. I used a clear brown on the back of this guy to make more toned, but as soon as I started with the violet and purple I started going nuts. I have a feeling ones with a more pronounced color (such as the gold-yellow Greenmons I have) will use more of the base color coming through. These are all experiments in control as well for me, so yeah I'm sure they will change with time. Thanks for the critique!

It looks great man. I have been trying too, one question. Are you using Acryllic paints or something more high end Like Monster Kolors? My biggest concern is keeping the brush clean from pot to pot, figure to figure. I tried Monster Kolors, but they were obviously Enamel or oil-based. I ruined my first brush just not knowing how to clean shit properly. Any info. greatly appreciated.

I'm using V Color, Monster Kolor, and Mad Ape Ninja paints. After I spray a color, I run lacquer thinner through my airbrush. After a while I took the airbrush apart and cleaned it using the same lacquer thinner and put it back together. I learned all of this via Youtube videos.

Oh, sweet Jebus... Bless your heart, man, but did you have to start with my favorite monsters from my favorite show from my formerly favorite maker? Makes it harder to watch you grow up in public and try to be constructive.

An opinion, delivered without (well, with minimum) malice: Busy is not better. Look to Brent's choices from his drop last night; a simple palette laid with elegance and grace. The sculpt has to be allowed to sing, too.

Looks cool man, only way to figure it all out is to do it. Don't be afraid to strip a custom and start over. If you're pissing of David ^ you are on the right track JK

Yeah I do understand... these first bunch of ones I do are going to involve a LOT of experimentation... the Baltan was seeing how much I can control the spray, use masking tape for my first time, how color change looked over other paints, and so on. I know I'm covering the vinyl completely which is usually a no-go as well, but 'flesh' vinyl to me is not really something I like showing through when it comes to such beasts, so I decided to give these two full makeovers. I have been traveling to Europe for the past couple weeks and when I come home at the end of the month I know I have a bunch more blanks waiting for me that I'm going to be trying different things with.

I really appreciate the replies and critiques!

I'm happy with how Pestar's back came out far more than his front; I used a transparent brown on a lot of it and I think that gave the flesh a bit more of an 'oomph' so to speak. Thanks again!

Just back from a three-week trip and having a go at minimalism for once! The pink on this Greenmons is a great color so I wanted to show it off and compliment it. I don't think I should have put that blue-shade purple on and stuck to the violet, but live and learn. I think it's also time to get some good paint pens for small things like the pupils. I hope you enjoy!

This is by far the best of your three paints, I do not like the blue in the back either, but otherwise it's really good. Congratulation !

The yellow Greenmons is really nice. It has a classic color way feel to it. Toothaction's advice was just what the doctor ordered.;)

Sometimes we use the back of a paint brush to make the pupils ;)
